BAIT AND SWITCH!!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!! This place should be on the top of the BBB's hit list! My sister found an amazing dress there so she ordered it and put down a deposit. The sales girl Brandi, measured her between a 2 and a 4 and INSISTED she order a 2. My sister told her to order a 4. Four months later the dress comes in and it's too small. Brandi goes back and measures the dress and says: "This dress is measuring at a size 2, but it is marked a 4. This is a manufacturers defect." Translation: we ordered you a 2 like we wanted to and sewed in a 4 tag. Then she says they'll let it out for free because of the mistake. Next day, we get a call that Pronovia (Manufacturer) needs them to measure my sister so they know that she didn't just gain weight. Translation: MD lied to our faces! If this truly was a defect, they would have sent another dress asap. SO obviously something stinks.Called for a manager for a week and NEVER got a call back. Back up again we go. They measure her and tell her she gained an inch on her waist. When we asked about the dress measuring as a 2, she claims that that was a mistake and she gained weight. SO we are taking the dress and going elsewhere AND Filing in small claims court against the store and Brandi for the price of the dress. Also complaining to the Better Business Bureau. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!!!!

Very few bridal boutiques I've been to deserve a negative review, but I felt Madeleine's Daughter Bridal of Portsmouth, NH truly earned it. I was shopping around for a dress a couple years ago and tried on a few at Madeleine's Daughter Bridal. I tried on a few gowns and then ended up purchasing one elsewhere.

Now in my mid-20s, I recently made an appointment to try on wedding gowns after seeing their display at a bridal show, this was the email I received shortly after visting their location:

"I noticed you made an appointment on Mon Jan 17 to try on wedding gowns. I know that you came in a few years ago as well, and based on your purchasing history with us and our prom store Soiree, I'm sorry to say that we need to cancel your appointment and will not be able to help you in the future.
Thank you,

I obviously would not recommend this store to anyone based on their blatant refusal to provide a reasonable opportunity for me to try on and potentially purchase my next sample dress. If you require multiple visits and/or time to finalize your important gown decision they will not cater to your needs. Clearly they do not want return customers or positive reviews.

I first went to Madeline's Daughter in 2009. I found a dress there that was almost perfect. I told the saleswoman that I loved the dress, but I wanted to add some pickups to the bottom of it, as it just hung straight down the way it was, and add a longer train. She insisted that this was possible and even had a seamstress come in to confirm. I guess people will say whatever it takes to get you to buy something. After taking over $2k of my money and making me wait 2 months longer than I was promised, I got a call that my dress was in. When I went to go see it, it wasn't the correct dress and they tried to insist that it was! It wasn't until I showed them photos of me in the dress the last time I was there that they finally acknowledged the mistake. They said they would inquire about where my real dress was and get back to me. A few weeks later, I got another call in which they tell me my dress can't be made like that after all and did I just want to come back up and pick another one. Obviously I freaked out and after several unpleasant conversations with managers and owners, I was finally told, once again, that my dress could indeed be ordered the way I wanted it, but I would have to wait another 5 months. This totally screwed up my schedule as they told me when I first ordered my dress that it would take at least 9 months to do the alterations and my wedding was less than 12 months away. Thank God I started looking at dresses early! Again they assured me that they would do whatever it takes to get it done. Here's the best part, my dress finally comes in the way it's supposed to, I go for my first alteration, they tell me to come back in 2 months so that they can get all the work done. When I come back two months later, all the pins are still in it and not one thing has been done! They apologized and said that the seamstress decided it was too much work for her to do and that she decided she wanted another seamstress to do it instead, but failed to tell anyone over the course of the last two months. This is 3 months before my wedding people! Did I mention that they took another $200 from me when my dress first arrived to do these alterations? After throwing an absolute fit, I finally got refunded my alteration money (because nothing had been done), took my dress and left. I had to find my own outside seamstress who could do 9 months worth the work in 2. Not surprisingly, once I got to my first fitting with her I also found out that the dress was made incorrectly and what I wanted to have done to the dress (simple pickups) could not, because there wasn't enough fabric, despite the fact that MD promised there was by 3 different seamstresses. What a joke. Thanks alot Madeline's Daughter - everything you said was a complete lie - completely inexperienced morons. Do not risk the most important day of your life on the empty promises of these people. This is supposed to be the best part of getting married, not the worst.

I really wish I could give this store a better rating, because they did do a good job the year before the wedding. We had a great experience picking out our dresses and the bride looked absolutely amazing. However, our bridesmaid shoes were dyed a completely different color than our dress. Our dresses were brown and our shoes came out pink. Then before we even got to walk down the isle, every one of our straps broke on our dresses! We had to fight to keep our dresses from falling off us and finally had to change an hour into the reception because it was so bad. Thankfully we didn't have a bridezilla in our wedding and she was ok with it - especially when the bussel on her dress broke an hour later and she wound up having to change! Oh and did I mention that her headpiece was broken when she got it and they refused to fix it? In the end, they gave her a 20% rebate on her headpiece and a friend fixed it for her. They offered to dye all our shoes black after the wedding, but informed us that the straps on the dresses weren't meant to hold up the dress and they couldn't do anything about that. I'm sorry, but what exactly are straps meant to do???

I went in to Madeleine's Daughter dress shop looking for a dress for my son's wedding. I found a beautiful dress for 192.00, shoes I couldn't find anywhere else and a lovely scarf for 10.00, which matches my dress perfectly. The staff were very attentive and helpful, especially GiGi Donlon. Her expertise and down to earth attitude was very reassuring and made the whole process much more fun. I truly appreciate all of the help and great products I received at Madeleine's Daughter dress shop!

Buyer Beware! They sell you a sample dress and claim the dress is brand new!!! I purchased a brand new Pronovias wedding dress fall of 08 for my fall of 09 wedding. In May of 09 I went in for my first dress fitting, When I tried on the dress I was very unhappy, the seams on the sides of the dress were not centered which made the dress look crooked. We brought this to the attention of the seamstress and my sales associate. We asked to see the sample dress to show that the dress was defected. They gave a lot of back lash saying it was in our heads and the dressed looked fine. We spoke to the manager and they said it would all be fixed for our next fitting. My next fitting was in Sep of 09 and we were extremely happy because the dress seemed like a new dress. We went to pick up the dress two days before the wedding and they didn't have the dress ready after calling that morning to confirm. We had to pick up the dress the next day.
The night before the wedding we had to steam the dress in the hotel room because it was wrinkled from being in the bag. While steaming, we noticed loose beading. The day of my wedding I noticed that the dress did not have the white liner underneath. That is the last thing I wanted to think about and went on with my day. Now March of 2010 I went to have my dress cleaned and preserved and they noticed that all the care instruction and size tags were cut out of the dress. When I called Madelein's Daughter to ask why there were no tags in the dress they said that was odd because only the sample dress doesn't have tags. I then confronted them on how I thought they sold me the sample dress and they denied it. I then called Pronovias directly and they told me that they would be calling Madelien??s Daughter directly because the tags should never be cut out of the dress. Also FYI I ordered 5 bridesmaid dresses from them and it took 7 and half months for them to come in. I had to call the manufacture directly to grantee they would be there for my wedding. Stay away!

I walked in with 6 of my 8 bridesmaids to look for bridesmaid dresses. We had an appointment and we arrived 15 minutes early. They told us to start looking and someone would be with us shortly. No one came around to help us and they had little selection of bridesmaid dresses. It wasn't worth the trip up to Portsmouth from MA. I heard they have a good selection of bridal dresses but we never made it that far we ended up just leaving after no getting any help.

For a store that carries such beautiful designer dresses, their attitudes really cheapen the experience. The entire time I was there my consultant badmouthed other stores. Give it a rest! I was not there to hear about their latest arguement with their competitors. I bought my dress somewhere that wasn't so overly dramatic.

My experience with Madeleine's Daughter was outstanding! Heather was so professional and really listened to me and what my vision was for a dress. The first time I went was mid-week and I was the 1st appointment of the day, and my mom, sister and I were led to a private room with pedestal and mirrors, even a private bathroom! I thought maybe it would be busier and less personal the second time I went which was on a Saturday but I still felt special and Heather did not act like I was taking too much of her time. The selection here is broad enough for anyone to find something they love.

My Mom and I looked at four different bridal shops, Madeleine's being the first, and I'm so glad it was. I got a level of service at Madeleine's that I didn't receive at any other bridal shop. I printed out photos of dresses I liked, come to find out they were the complete opposite of what I was looking for. The woman helping me asked what I liked and didn't like about each dress I tried on, and would tailor my comments to each new round of dresses she brought out, getting closer and closer until the last round, the second-to-last dress I had to try on, I absolutely loved! As this was the first place, I had to search other stores to see if there was something I might love even more. I did end up finding my perfect dress at another local store, however Madeleine's would still be the absolute first place I would recommend to any bride-to-be. The gowns are beautiful and the service is like no other shop. Thank you so much!

Do not have Natalie help you! She was rude and acted like we were wasting her time. She completely ruined what is supposed to be an exciting and special time in a girl's life. I can not speak for the other consultants but it does reflect on the kind of people they hire. I will never go back there again and I would never recommend this place to anyone!!

My wife and I had a wonderful experience at Madeleine's Daughter. The dressing rooms here are bigger and more comfortable than those at any other bridal salon that we visited. They are equipped with a low pedestal and extra chairs for the inevitable helpers. Our consultant was very helpful and able to pick out some beautiful dresses based only on a few vague ideas of what she was looking for. Madeleine's Daughter stores all of their dresses in a back room, so they are not accessible to customers. Unless you're looking for one specific dress or you're willing to try on what a consultant thinks you might like, you may find this frustrating.
