.

I was a camp counselor at Harbor Haven Day Camp. The camp serves children with special needs. They may have diagnoses like Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Emotional Disturbance, Asperger?s Syndrome, Language and Learning Disabilities, etc. The kids are either driven to camp by their caregivers or picked up by mini school bus. Most campers were from New Jersey or New York. The children are usually split up into groups according to gender and age. They participate in activities such as Arts & Crafts, Cooking, Drama, Sports, and Swimming. They plan some field trips, such as the ballpit/arcade and miniature golf. The trips were slightly challenging from the counselor?s perspective because you are taking care of a diverse group of children that have various special needs. There is a talent show at the end of the summer.

PROS: opportunity for children to socialize and participate in fun activities
CONS: small pool, would be better on real campgrounds
