I am very particular with how my hair gets cut and who cuts my hair. Finding a good barber is like finding a good mechanic--once you find one that you trust, you always come back for that same service. I've tried many barbers before acting on the suggestion of my wife and tried Maple Barber Shop in Ridgewood, NJ. I'm glad I listened to her because they gave me the haircut I asked for without a problem.

This is a popular place for men to get both a haircut and a shave as witnessed by the seats that are always occupied in the waiting area, complete with magazines and television. Usually there are two or three barbers on hand with up to six on very busy days. Repeat customers have their favourite barbers and will wait untill they are available.

They are a very friendly bunch and that's part of the charm--they know how to engage in conversation with different people.

I always find myself in capable hands whenever I get a haircut over here. A typical haircut for me will cost around $20 including tip. I'm tempted to have a wet shave done by them one day. From what I have seen so far they done a spectacular job complete with a hot towel and hot shaving foam to make shaving a much more pleasant, old school experience.

My only gripe is the amount of hair that is accumulated after time on the floor. I understand that they are very busy and can't always keep on top of it. Usually it's a good sign to see all that hair on the floor of a barber shop signalling a strong clientele. Still, it would be nice to sweep up more often than not.

PROS: Fantastic barbers, great service and haircuts
CONS: Can be very, very busy

I have taken my son to the Maple Barber Shop for years now--I originally used another local barber and was not pleased with the service. I am happy to say that I don't have complaints about the service at this barber!

The Maple Barber Shop is really popular. On the weekends and holidays, be prepared to wait for awhile. It is a small "Mom and Pop" shop, but there are comfortable leather chairs for you to sit in, and a TV and magazines to while away the time as you wait for your favorite barber.

My son has had his hair cut by every barber in the place--they know him when he comes in and are very friendly to him, chatting and making conversation. I notice that some gentlemen that show up wait for specific barbers to cut their hair, suggesting a strong repeat clientele.

Haircuts range in price. Typically to cut my son's hair, including a tip, will cost $20.

They offer shaving, buzz cuts, and long hair services. They will cut women's hair, but I have yet to see that!

My only recommendation would be to sweep more regularly--there is a lot of hair on the floor around the cutting stations. Each stylist is always so busy that the hair builds up--if it were swept up more frequently, it would be appreciated! I don't like having foreign hair on my shoes while I wait for my son's cut to be finished.

Overall I return to this barber for the prices and for the skilled barbers.

PROS: Friendly, skilled barbers.
CONS: Hairy floor!
