I had a bad experience when purchasing topsoil. I gave my dimensions as 72 sqft at 11" deep. They estimated that I needed 5 cubic yards and used (1 yard = 80 sqft at 2" deep) as a guideline. The cashier thought the estimate was high and later called me at home to confirm my dimensions and verified the estimate with the owner. They delivered the topsoil and it turned out to be twice as much as what I needed. The next morning I used several websites that estimate topsoil and used the same dimensions that I have the garden center. The result was 3 cubic yards. I later called a landscaper and he told me that 1 yard = 150 sqft at 2" deep. This explains why I had twice as much as I really needed. I printed out my estimates from the internet showing 3 cubic yards for the same measurements and went back to the garden center to point out the problem. I was referred to the owner, Alan. I tried to be nice about it and wasn't upset, but he was very arrogant and condescending and basically blamed me for having something wrong with my measurements. When I asked him why the measurements I gave them caused their estimate to be 5 cubic yards while several websites estimated 3 for the same measurements, he was at a loss for words and refused to admit that they made a mistake. He finally agreed to refund me for the 2 yards and pick up the remaining topsoil from my driveway, but told me "We are done", implying that he no longer wants my business. My wife and I were planning a big stone patio project and were considering buying from him, but not anymore. He not only lost a customer, but he lost a major sale too. It is apalling that the OWNER would talk to a customer like this. Even though he gave me a hard time, I will at least say that he did solve my problem by picking up the unused soil and giving me a refund. I was not upset about the mistake, but I was upset with the owner's attitude.

I'm still not sure if they if they meant to use 80 sqft at 4" deep to estimate a cubic yard, or if they were trying to oversell me. That would have been an accurate estimate of a cubic yard. Garden centers in the area are a dime a dozen, so I will not be doing business with them anymore.
