Il Mulino would be better renamed, "Il Gobbolino', after the absolutely fast-paced "hurry-up and leave" dinner that we experienced this evening. The restaurant and owner, Jimmy Lulani, proudly display the accolades of fine dining in the window of the store-front type restaurant and for culinary preparation, deservedly so. BUT, that's where it all ends.
We arrived for dinner this evening at 6:15 PM and by 6:25 Mr, Lulani was asking if we were ready to order our appetizers. The fact that we had just removed our jackets and greeted our other guests didn't seem to matter to Mr. Lulani who had apparently, in his own mind, affixed a time frame that we were allowed to partake in a dinner. From the very beginning of this dining experience we felt, and were, rushed through one course after another. Waiters scurried about like worker ants trying to please the Queen, who in this case was Mr. Lulani, snapping commands and flailing his arms about, pointing to one table after another prompting waiters to clear plates as customers finished their food. In our case, one guest had mearly placed her fork down to sip a glass of wine only to have a waiter grab her plate prior to her completion of the appetizer. Keeping to his gestapo "You will order now" style, Mr. Lulani approached the table asking for our main course orders. We picked up our menus to a "You haven't decided yet" which was then followed by "Let me tell you what I would suggest." At that point I was quite concerned over the "Bums Rush" approach to his treatment of customers. In the following minutes, and I do minutes ... 5 to be exact, our meals were placed before us. Hovering waiters circled the table waiting to grab the first dish completed, while at the same time, Mr. Lulani motioned to our table gesturing for them to move us along. At one point, one of our guests turned to the waiter and said, "Please leave us alone so that we can enjoy our dinner. And, tell him (pointing to Mr, Lulani) to stop ordering you to clean our table. We'll let you know when we're finished".
Throughout the dinner I was bumped seven times during the evening by passing waiters. And, as the last morsels of our main course were placed in our mouths the dessert cart was rolled before us with a plethora of suggestions of what we would like, should like, and should have for dessert. At this point we were still trying to digest earlier food consumption and opted for coffee which was served with the check. Ask we divided the check amongst us, Mr. Lulani again made his presence known with a "Can I help you, or are you ready to pay."
And, there's more folks! On the way out, the hostess asked if we enjoyed our dinner. One of our guests replied, the meal was excellent, but, " I don't like the way he treats his customers" ... refering to Mr, Lulani. Within listening distance, Mr. Lulani replied, "I don't like you either" and followed us outside the restaurant challenging our guests comment. He then told us that he had a restaurant to run, that we had said that we would arrive at 6:15 PM and, that we were late. One of the couples with us reminded him that they were at the restaurant and seated at 6:10 PM while the rest of us entered the restaurant at exactly, 6:15 PM. We told him that while he does serve excellent cuisine, if he continues to treat customers in a "rushed" fashion, he will loose them. With a smirk on his face, he gestured to the "rave" reviews posted in his window and said, "with reviews like this ... I don't think so." At this point we assured him that he had lost five, forever, this evening.

In a nushell: Fine cuisine needs to be enjoyed with time enough to savor the flavors and love put into the preparation and presentation. It might have been an "off" night for Il Mulino, however, they need to slow the pace, or get out of the race!

I have to strongly disagree with what this rude comment has to say.... The restaurant deserves to be rated one of the top five best restaurants in the bergen county area. This restaurant brings fines dining into the neighborhood. The prices are very affordable for the amounts of food you are given. I am a regular there and I should know. When I order my veal marsala or any other entrees they give me more then a portion size worth of pasta (on the house); bread, butter, AND bruschetta (on the house) And for dessert, the owner gave me and my husband two glasses of Amaretto, biscotti, AND a fruit plate (on the house) ! I also happen to love the vegetables they give you on the side, I usually end up asking for some more. This restaurant is really friendly to me and whom ever I bring along with me. There is a reason why it's always busy. I can't believe what an awful comment this is.....

Been here many times, even had company luncheons here and the food is always delicious and the wait staff is very attentive. Very good menu and lots of great specials. Don't miss the dessert cart, the lava is awesome, warm chocolate fudge over moist chocolate cake - so decadent :0)

Good food at an affordable price. Their Sunday dinners (and early birds) are a nice 3 course meal at a good price. The staff is sometimes overwhelmed (on a busy day). Overall, a nice quiet place to have dinner.
