Fables of Bay Head is a treasure, located in quaint Bay Head NJ. Every year that I visit the Jersey Shore, I stop in Fables for an ice cream and a chance to browse their folk art gift selections. This year was no exception.

Open since 1984, Fables is a popular spot to visit for country gifts and folk art items. They have antique Americana furniture, quilts, prints, jewelry (I was enchanted by the spoon rings), candles, and other decorative items for the home. Prices are variable but their selections are created by skilled artisans, so you know that you are paying for quality rather than mass production.

You can't miss Fables if you are driving down Main Street--it is a welcoming storefront in a Victorian building erected in the 1880's. Tables are outside during the summer to house children licking ice cream cones. Inside the shop, you can buy cups and cones of your favorite flavors of hard ice cream at reasonable prices--a small cup (with ample scoops inside!) of cookies and cream ice cream was $2.25.

Fables is open 7 days a week--when we visited recently during the week, the clerk was just getting ready to close around 10:00PM. Fables is the sort of store that gets a lot of repeat business--the store manager was chatting with the locals and they all knew each other. Still, she was very friendly to me even though I was a stranger, and allowed me to browse the merchandise freely and without interruption.

To park at Fables, grab a coveted spot on the street or on a side road. Take a jaunt over there if you are visiting the Bay Head area. It has that small town, old-world feeling that is so often lost in our modern age.

PROS: Lovely gift shop & yummy ice cream.
CONS: None!
