One word: Dirty
This diner used to be really good until recently. My last 2 dining experiences were not enjoyable (to say the least) Had lunch there in August and spent the hour waving off flying bugs. October 16th had lunch and was given dirty utensils (twice) The second set appeared to have not been washed at all. With that, lost appetite and left (without paying bill as we did not eat what was ordered) Needless to say I will not be going back there [ever]. And based on several of the other reviews, neither will others:
i.e. Robert M. 10/1/2013- The Red Oak used to be our favorite diner until my wife spit out a cockroach that was in her omelet! Now we know as gross as that is that it does happen but the response from the waitress when we told her was, honest to GOD, "thank you for not making a scene because last week a woman found a roach in her food and started screaming at the top of her lungs"!!! Uh really...how about getting a better exterminator? The manager didn't make us pay and thanked us for not making a scene! I will never step foot in that place again!

In a word- TERRIBLE! Everything about this place was awful. First, the service was terrible. Not once did the waitress ask if we wanted refills on our drinks or ask if everything was ok. The food was really bad. We ordered nachos and asked if we could get them with real cheese and not Velveeta or processed cheese. Sure enough we were brought stale chips smothered in Velveeta.
I ordered a medium rare burger and received a dried out hockey puck. The fries tasted like they were fried in old oil as they had a "fishy" taste to them.
It took forever to get our check and the teenage girls at the check out counter were more concerned with talking amongst each other than servicing the customers.
Just a really terrible place to go and eat. We wont be going there ever again.

The Red Oak Diner, Hazlet NJ is Back and even Better! For those of you not acquainted with Monmouth County NJ/Shore area, the Red Oak has been around for about 50 years (with one short change of name several years ago). They are back with an awesome menu (traditional diner food as well as a full steak menu and high end stuff, if your in the mood), all at reasonable prices. They also have complete pizza selections; delivery in the area; and a full ice cream bar with Hershey Ice cream - $1.00 for a cone! We were there in July for their comedy night ($15.00 included 2 drinks) had some pretty tasty appetizers and $2.00 drafts. Also very kid friendly (movies; free kids meals etc.) I would definitely go back! Their web site is pretty informative - redoakdiner.com. Enjoy!

This is supposed to be a diner - there's always a comedy show or something going on. I just want to eat. If I wanted a show or entertainment I'd go to a club or theater. The food was ok but a little pricy I thought. The service is typical diner "what can i get ya service". The restaurant is beautiful inside but I wasn't impressed for the prices we paid -

I won't go back. I'll go back to the Middletown Diner which has terrible food but at least the prices are reasonable and I can eat my meal in peace.

The former Adelphi Diner is still a great place to eat, I go there sundays after church for breakfast all the time. They make fantastic pancakes and waffles for breakfast. lunch and dinner is pretty much like any other diner. The service is excellent.

The Red Oak Diner offers your basic menu of any average diner. It has average prices with decent food. It serves its purpose when you have a craving for diner food, but it is not over the top.

Occasionally the service at Adelphi is merely good but more often thant not it's perfect. The owner must make a concerted effort to inculcate his staff of mostly 20-something servers with what it means to give friendly, efficient service. As soon as you sit down you're brought a carafe of water with a lemon slice in it. The staff almost always gets my order exactly right. And it's fast too.

I haven't tried a lot of different dishes because I love their turkey club sandwiches. And the always make them as instructed: Well browned rye toast and well browned fries. I also like their gyros. The portions are oversized, like most diners these days and the prices are moderate considering portion size, service and location.
