The kids and I drove down to Cape from New Brunswick to visit Historic Cold Spring Village, which had been recommended to me by a few people. It was truly a lovely day! I can't think of anywhere else that is educational but kept my kids excited all day long. The blacksmith shop was a real treat, and there was a crafts area where they could dress up in costume, make souvenir crafts, and play games from the 1800s. The ice cream parlor was a nice, cool treat. Although it was a bit hot, the village is shaded by a canopy of trees. I would definitely recommend this as a great outing for the family!

I get the sense from talking to other people that our family's experience may be the exception to the rule, and I hope that's the case. We visited Cold Springs Village this past summer one day when they had their "Day Out with Thomas." which for those of you without little ones is Thomas the Tank Engine, a children's show that airs on local PBS stations and little boys (and girls) seem to love.

Well, they had a life-size Thomas the Tank Engine come and ride o ntheir tracks, which was exciting for the kids. However, besides riding on Thomas, there weren't a heck of lot of other activites for the kids to do, short of paying oxorbiant fees to get into the "historic" section of Cold Springs village.

Maybe it was the heat of the day and the kids who, although, excited about seeing Thomas, were a bit on the miserable side. But we weren't that impressed with the village as a whole or the ancillary activities they had for "Day Out with Thomas."
