You'd be hard pressed to find a better university for the price you'll pay going to Rutgers. The course and major selection is ridiculously varied, and once you get in, you're free to take whatever classes you want. Not to mention that, with the (tens of?) thousands of people coming to rutgers every year, you're going to meet a lot of friends and have a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, you can also read that the other way - if you prefer high school sized course classes (20-30), then you should definitely look elsewhere. Some introductory (101) classes have upwards of 500 people during lectures. Speaking of which, the faculty, for the most part, is made up of good professors who really want you to learn the material.
As for providing you with tools to succeed in life: Rutgers gives you a quality education, but doesn't give you a good start into entering the job market. There's no co-op program and once you graduate...you're pretty much on your own.
Otherwise, I would give Rutgers a hearty recommendation even though it gets a bad rap as the second-choice school.

I went to this school for four years. My education was decent, but it is only what you make of it. The staff are useless and refuse to go out of their way to help you. The price is good though compared to private colleges. The books required for courses can get astronomical in price.

Having received my BA from here, I can definitely attest to Rutgers uncompromising views of providing an excellent education to all of its students. By far, my favorite thing about this institution is its expansive list of courses available, which is great for anyone who is undecided about what they want to major in. The only drawback is that you'll have to take transportation to all of the different campuses, which can get a bit tiring after a few semesters.

Rutgers is not only a highly ranked school but a great deal for the price! Choose a campus with a small college feel (Livingston or Busch) or stay on College Ave for the big university feel. Great professers and a great education.

Being such a large institution it allows for the success of everyone with many majors and resources to do well. There are many club organizations to get involved in. Many parties for those who are interested.
The only downside is the often poor bus system, but at then end its bearable and not as bad as some people say.
Great place.

As a graduate student of Rutgers University, I am pretty satisfied with the system. However it seems the student community is not active enough. Having stayed here for 3 years, I haven't been to many student activities which I am interested in. Another thing is that it is too hard to register the recreation classes. You have to go real early to get a spot.
PROS: Safe, educational, good faculty support
CONS: Not creative enough, rare chances or references of jobs for students

Rutgers is the best state school in New jersey. It's a really large school, as there are many different campuses. The main campus is in New Brunswick, and there's also Livingston campus which is more like a liberal arts college, Douglas which is an all-girls campus, and there's a commuter college in Newark. I had so much fun here during undergrad because there are parties non-stop every weekend. Oh yeah, the academic programs are pretty good too and since it's a state school, you can't beat the price!
