Our only contact with Bergen Fitness happened more than a few years ago, and I wasn't thinking about posting this, but what the heck, I've stumbled upon this page. We were in the market for a stationary bike and we had spent the better part of a Saturday going around to the fitness equipment shops in North Jersey.

No department stores - we wanted real knowledgeable insight into what the variety of models could do. Went to one on Rt. 17 North in Paramus, one on the southbound side, then went to Englewood and walked into Bergen Fitness on Dean St. There was a bike right near the front door. No one else was in the store, and a young man was behind the counter in the rear. For the next, I don't know, maybe four or five minutes, because we cut it short when we felt slighted, any questions we had about the equipment had to be yelled to him because this kid did not come from behind the counter. I got on the bike, looked for adjustments to the seat, the tension calibration of the wheel - my wife actually made a point of looking back and forth at me and at him to play up the fact that it was darn awkward that he was keeping his distance. With all the chatter I was purposefully offering, there is no way it could be construed that we weren't serious buyers.

I regret not addressing directly to him the slight of him giving zero effort, but since we had decided by then that no way they deserved the sale, we let it go, also because we are no strangers to being sized up for sub par service. I prefer to chalk it up to the careless apathy of youth. But it was exactly why we had avoided the big box retailers. It's not our job to teach good customer service - we'll just take our money elsewhere. We bought a great stationary bike later from a shop across from the post office in the neighboring town of Teaneck. ( It has since closed).

Even now, when we see an ad, or when anyone we know mentions this Bergen Fitness, out comes our little story. A store is only as good as the persons it has representing it, no matter how low on the rung they may be.
