In Short
Hopen, Malm, Aneboda-no, those are not suggestions to name your pet, but the Swedish names of IKEA's designer furnishings and decorative odds and ends. Created with a "one-way" layout in mind, shoppers weave through a labyrinth of seemingly endless showrooms stocked with equipment to creatively accessorize every room under the sun. With patrons ranging from groups of freshmen students looking to outfit their tiny dorms to entire families, the store offers a huge repertory of styles, patterns and colors for every unique taste. And speaking of tastes, the small restaurant just beyond the cashiers serves up traditional Swedish fare for those who worked up an appetite.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Before you brag about your "designer decor" at home, know that the low prices do have a catch---all furnishing are designed to be assembled by the consumer.

Watch out!

by toni d. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,056

Watch out, you will be run over! Ikea is a nice store, in theory. Once you go there, MY GOD, people will push you out of the way for a cheap candle. People come from miles around just to be super rude to one another. That being said, they do offer some nice home goods for a low price. They have a lot of unique designs. Make sure you take a look at the mirror and lighting sections. Be careful and inspect your purchase. We got our mattress from here and it was a total rip off. The model was plush and comfortable. We took it home and it was flat! We had to go out and buy and foam mattress topper to make it livable. Too bad, we spent a lot of money on it. 18 months later we are in the market for a new one. Another thing I would never buy from them is a couch. They are super expensive and very cheap looking. Everything else seems to be a good deal.

Daycare center on Crack. Assembly impossible.

by Flora S.

Because I am a glutton for punishment, I went to the daycare center on crack (aka Ikea) a few times. Have you ever been to an all-u-can-eat buffett where 300 pound trailer trash push you out of the way for the trough of honey chicken wings? Yup, Ikea attracts that crowd.

The prices are pretty low, quality is average, service is okay if you can get someone to talk to you.

CAUTION: Assembly is almost impossible! I've assembled Sauder, O'Sullivan, etc.,etc. All have their quarks but are simple compared to the pictoglyphs provided by Ikea.

Interesting place

by Kathleen P. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 8,555

They have a wide selection of unusual items but be careful when shopping with them online. I have never shopped in the store. Their shipping cost is unusually high. Always check first.

Ikea Elizabeth

by Renae E. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,854

We didn't expect them to be as nice as they were. We asked a guy from one department a question about another department, and he took the time not only to answer it but to make recommendations to us about it. Getting the correct exit for this IKEA is very tricky, especially if travelling north on the turnpike, so don't be surprised if you end up passing it.

You can even get them to pick you up in the city and take you round trip while they wait for you to shop starting at $95, round-trip.

Great reviews of this service on Apartment Therapy and in Time Out New York magazine

Cons: NONE. Even has a plush, clean vehicle and lets you play music that's on your Ipod on the way back over the car sound system

Bad Customer Service / Great Selection and Prices

by b00pi3flak3s

IKEA is freaking huge. Especially for folks from Manhattan, bringing back large items is simply not doable without a car or some extra cash for delivery. Whats worse is they now charge for the most obscure things -- likes BAGs. Its best if you have your own bags to keep bringing back. What a pain.

Pros: Variety, Furniture, Value

Cons: Service, Busy

Horrible Service!!!!

by cfs8112003

Delivered broken couch, never redelivered good couch as promised. Customer Service gave me a terrible run around, transfering me all over the country. No one had any answers, but offered illogical replies. I have never dealt with a less professional company, that was so poorly run, with employees that are completly untrained or just exceptionally stupid. Better to pay a few extra dollars and get items in good condition!

Pros: NONE

Cons: bad customer svcs, delivery svcs, everything else!!!

Great Products, Poor Delivery Service

by ac62269

IKEA has a huge selection of great products, but the customer service is very poor, especially the delivery service (which costs $100 by the way).

I bought a wardrobe from them and 2 of 7 parts were missing and one was damaged. Once I got through to customer service on the phone, I had a hard time articulating my problem, because all of the parts and pieces have very similar names. Their response was simply to ask which pieces and parts I was missing and then tell me that someone would call me back within 48 hours. They said that the parts (which are in stock) that are missing that I have already paid for could take up to 2 weeks to deliver. In the meantime, I'm stuck with a half-built wardrobe with no shelves or drawers.

Pros: Selection, Inexpensive, Design

Cons: Customer Service, Delivery Service, Customer Service

Inexpensive

by ejen

For cheap functional furniture and household goods-this can't be beat. However, the shipping / delivery charge is outrageous. But I love taking the free bus, and have gotten my money's worth.

Pros: Functional, Good Variety, Inexpensive

Love IKEA

by Corris

Who doesn't love IKEA? It is perfect for the New Yorker who lives in a small apt. with many options for living in a small space. Be prepared to break out a wrench or a hammer because you will have to assemble the piece yourself! Worth the drive to New Jersey or Long Island. :)

Pros: great for small space, brightly colored, comfy couches 4 sale

Cons: assembly required

Inexpensive prices for expensive tastes

by erinbrowne

Danish designed furniture and accessories at bargain prices. If you are looking for a clean, modern style, Ikea is the place to shop. Unfortunately you have to travel to Long Island or NJ to shop there, but it is worth it. Where else can you buy elegant looking vases and mirrors for $1.95?

Pros: Inexpensive, Trendy, Great Accessories

Cons: Far Away, Lack of Customer Serv, Long Lines
