This is the classic diner, and we were Sunday morning regulars for breakfast after church when we first moved to the area years ago. The dimensions are pretty snug around the tables and booths, so hefty folks have to keep their fingers crossed. You may have your chair back directly against the patron's behind you, and the wait staff may be a bit brusk, but the atmosphere is that way in a diner running full tilt, and this one is usually at a steady gallop. The location is where Teaneck Rd turns into Bergenfield NJ's South Washington street, and intersects with New Bridge Road, a viaduct to Hackensack and most points west. That brings a nice traffic flow past the front door with no serious nearby competition for diner fare. The food is very good, but the breakfast is the biggest selling point.

As with many diners, it gets crowded for weekend breakfast and brunch hours. You get the feeling during those times that they want you to eat and scam in a reasonable amount of time, rather than savor that last cup of coffee forever as the folks that are standing and waiting in the doorway squirm.

Matthew's is in my hometown and it's been one of those places I love to go to. Good food, great service and it's never overly crowded. I often go with my friends and family and the bill has always been a reasonable price.

Matthews has some of the best pancakes that I have ever tried. There are many different picks that you can get with toppings ranging from banana, to walnuts, and chocolate chips.
