I , unfortunately had to give my son's dog to the people at "common sense" I was a basket case, could hardly talk because I was sobbing.. Everyone there was kind and compassionate, especially Jerry, who promised me she would be taken care of and looked after. He encouraged me to call whenever I wanted, and I have done so and they all have been wonderful. I don't understand the nasty commentsthese people must have a screw loose This is the place to get your pets and if, God forbid, you need to bring them to be adopted, this is the best place overall thank you to all.

Dr. Blease and his wonderful staff had my pet, cat, cared for our cat for 10 days. My cat is diabetic and had a siezure and insulin shock. We thought we would loose him. They cared for him, gave us advice, and although some other Vet's may have given up as he's 13, our cat is now home and recovering. We stopped in unannounced numerous times to visit our pet and he was really well cared for. It's a busy place, but they knew everything that was going on with our pet. Even if things hadn't worked out positively I still would have written this positive review knowing they did everything possible to get my kitty back home.

They are a country Vet, and so it may look alittle hectic, but he knows what he's doing. The pet adoption center is in another building so there are many people coming and going, but there no one is more passionate then this Vet and his staff.

We adopted Oct. 2012 a Mix Breed Beagle puppy and we were promised a $50.00 dollar refund after paying over $250 to get her from Common Sense for Animals if we got her fixed at our Vet when she turned 6 months old. I drove back to the shelter which is in a different county than we live in to get my refund. The gal behind the desk said the paperwork was still being processed. That was a over a month ago...I still haven't gotten my check. After reading some posts. I'm glad I used my vet our dog as well and also had her belly botton done. I understand this dog shelter is busy and over crowded, but all are. At our visit they had a lot of grown dogs and three groups of puppies. We have adopted grown dogs from other places (3) in the past. I am big believer in Rescue Dogs/Cats. I think PAWS in Montclair, NJ is well run.

I took my cat here for constipation and not urinating. Dr. Blease told me he needed antibiotics. It didn't work. The fifth time I brought him there he finally took a xray. He told me he was constipated. He kept him and told me he gave him an enema. He used forceps to pull out feces from his anus. He then told me he was no longer constipated and I could get him. I took him back because there was a hole near his anus. He tried telling me it was a cat bite from one of my other indoor cats. I know that wasn't right. I took him for a second opinion and they said my cat's colon was ripped due to trauma. He needed immediate surgery or he would of died. So I had to take him to a surgeon for surgery. If it wasn't for the spca of Pa my cat would have died due to Dr. Blease using forceps my cat is only a kitten. I had trusted Dr. Blease and had took my 5 animals there for years. I had heard horrific stories about him, but I still gave him the benefit of the doubt. I was terribly mistaken. His worker Karen is a liar. I called for my records and she said there was no copy machine or fax. I am trying to get justice for my cat and I will not give up. He is the only one that treated my cat. The hole was definitely no damn cat bite, but trauma due from the force of the sponge forceps.
I understand people might say good things about him because I thought the same way about him, but it took my cat almost near death to realize how wrong I really was. Thanks for the surgeon my cat can deficate out of his anus instead of a hole Dr. Blease had made. I believe he is an animal killer. My friend told me he killed her dog and like I said I still went there almost costing me my little kitty. So, I am just warning everybody if you go there one day your animal might not make it.

this no kill shelter is a blessing to not only stray animials, but anyone who is looking for world class service on a restricted budget. both my mother and i have had all our pets neutered here, and take them religiously. i made the mistake of taking my oldest to another vet as i had moved further from dr. belise then i was able to travel(1.5hrs). this vet did bloodwoork, ultrasound, and pumped him up with fluids. unfortunately he had no idea what he was talking about, i had the paperwork faxed to Common Sense and Dr. Belise told me right away what to do and how to fix it, if possible since time is of the essence. My love goes out to him and his incredible staff, he hasn't failed me or my family since the day we had the pleasure of meeting. If your reading this, Thank You for the compassion and understanding.

I adopted a 12 week old puppy from here 3 months ago(2/10). She is the greatest pup ever! She was one of 7 rescued from a kill shelter in NC, and the last one left at the Common Sense shelter. She had a large umbilical hernia on her belly and she was pretty small (for a large breed dog), but in good health. The doctor offered to remove the hernia when we had her spayed. I decided that should be done BEFORE she left the shelter so as not to get her used to being home with the family and having to go back there for a few days for surgery. They did not take ONE PENNY from me, (not even the adoption fee!) until 2 days later when I came to pick up the pup. She was spayed and had the hernia removed. She was in fine health, maybe a little dirty, (but due to the high volume of patients and shelter animals I can see how they wouldn't have time to bathe pups all the time).
On our second visit to have her stitches removed (2 weeks later) I was charged nothing but a fee for the rabies vaccination she received. I think these people are doing a great service for un-wanted and stray pets. I think they could use more workers/volunteers to do the prep work, but other than that, I would definitely go back for another pet. The shelter was clean, the animal areas were large, all the animals had food and clean water... and seemed very excited to see people when visitors arrived. All I can say is go look for yourself, make your own decision. I wouldn't trade my pup for anything!

I adopted both of my dogs from Common Sense (Annie - an English Pointer who was adopted last Feb. and Connor who is a lab mix who was adopted April 22,2006) and ever time I have been to their place they have been so nice and helpful. As for the people who have nothing but bad things to say about Dr. Blease grow up. Every one that I have EVER talked to has nothing but wonderful things to say about him and his staff. I know from my experience with this place I give them nothing but praise for the work they do

In defense of Common Sense for Animals...
I am absolutely sickened by some of the reviews on this site! First of all, I work here, and we just re-opened after remodeling an old dairy barn on the property. It is beautiful to say the least! Our new cat atriums each have their own air filtration, they are bright and airy, and full of beds and toys. The cats that are waiting here for adoption LOVE them. So do we, including Dr Blease. We have never euthanized an animal here unless it was injured or sick beyond help, or was vicious and a danger. And, Dr Blease reccommends neutering male dogs at 9 months old, and females at 6 months. I have never seen him perform either of these surgeries on any puppy! You need to get your facts straight. Occationally we will get in a puppy through our Southern dog Rescue program that was altered as a puppy before arriving. We are a group of people here that LOVE these animals and have NOTHING but their best interest in mind! We foster them, medicate them when needed, walk the floors with them...it goes on and on. How small minded to post things like this and try to scare people away from giving lost, abandoned animals a second chance at a place where we go above and beyond for these poor creatures! If you are bold enough to write this slander, be bold enough to come here and take a tour. See the truth for yourself!

I adopted a dog about 6 yrs ago, and a kitten 3 years ago from Common Sense For Animals. They are both wonderful pets and I thank the doctor and his staff for taking the time and effort to give these poor animals another shot at a good life. My dog was adopted out once before and got brought back the next day for chewing the man's couch. He spent a total of 5 months there until I found him and I can't imagine what life would be like without him. Thanks again Guys !!!!

I rescued my female coonhound from them a little over a year ago, and think Dr. Blease is wonderful - he comes from a very good place. My dog went back for spaying 6 weeks later, and an infection was discovered that almost killed her - they carefully nursed her back to health, and then cut the bill to what one office visit would be-instead of the 3-day intensive care stay she had - just because we had just adopted her and couldn't afford that much. I will always remember them if I hit the lottery!!!

That man is a scientist that euthanize,s dogs and cats if they are not adopted or if they do something they think is wrong. We got a Shitzu toy poodle mix there and we still have her and she is miserable most of the day because they spayed her without even asking us if we wanted her spayed. That doctor looks like those scientists that abuse animals. If you go there you will see the little cages they put them in and how they treat them.It is disgusting how they do not want dogs to be dogs.If you are ever going to go to common sense for animals you make sure it is to tell them how much of abusers they are.

I found a 3 week old feral kitten & this place saved her life! after bringing her to another vet who frowned upon her being feral and telling me she was sure to die overnight, I brought her to them. They kept her 2 days and gave her the best possible care. She was literally on deaths door and now she is playing and eating on her own. These people are wonderful!!

I have nothing but praise for Common Sense for Animals. I adopted my cat from CSA 3 years ago and do not know what my life would be like without him. My cat is a highly valued member of the family and a loving companion. If it was not for CSA rescuing this beautiful but severely ill cat 3 years ago this December, he would not be here today where he is protected, fed, loved, and absolutely treasured. Thanks Dr Blease and Company. Keep up the great job!

The private owner,of this shelter, is a mentally disturbed individual who likes to prove that he loves kids by killing any dog that is defending his turf against an outsider.
If you notice he is really skilled at bs w/people&he has no love whatsoever for animals in the least ,other than making AS MUCH MONEY FROM THEM AS POSSIBLE&HIDING THAT MONEY FROM THE IRS.

Common Sense for Animals is a no kill shelter. Dr. Belize, a great veterinarian and his staff make up the foundation for this wonderful loving environment for unwanted pets. They place a high priority on the standard of care that their animals receive. If you are in the market for adopting a new pet into your home this is definitley the first stop I'd recommend that you make.
