This restaurant is on restaurant com I got a gift certificate from restaurant com for $25.00 and east toyko refused to honor the certificate claiming they didnt ask to be put on resaurant com Well a marketing consultant goes to the restuarant , take pictures, gets the menu, and you sign a contract to be on restaurant com . So they are using the site to market their business and not honoring the gift certificate. beware dont print a certificate for this restaurant , cause management lies and says they didnt ask to be on restaurant com when their is a process of a marketing director to come to the restaurant and sign on.

Despite the fact that we had made reservations two weeks in advance, it was nearly impossible for us to get seated (on the restaurant side, not the hibachi side). We waited nearly 50 minutes for someone to take a drink order and that was only because we tried to stop the wait staff each and every time someone hurried by, ignoring our table.

The food came out slowly and incrementally, and we didn't get some of what we ordered. The wait staff was rude...didn't seem to want to help us, didn't seem to be familiar with the menu, didn't know what we had ordered or what was coming out of the kitchen.

When we got management involved, food started coming out of the kitchen (over 2 hours after sitting down); however, we were still missing items and had to ask for them. Some of our party didn't get their food until everyone else was finished.

After 3 hours, we had to BEG for our bill (they're lucky we did) and found numerous errors on it.

With how terrible the evening was, any decent restaurant would have comped a round of drinks, comped a meal, given a gift certificate to try them again. Not East Tokyo. They had excuse after excuse for why things went poorly - even blaming us for ordering off mulitiple places on their menu (sushi, Thai and Japanese!). After speaking to a few members of the management, we had 10% taken off our bill - and were made to feel like it was a big favor.

We are all restaurant-goers. We've never been tempted to leave a restaurant without paying - until going to East Tokyo. And we've never left a restaurant without leaving a tip - until going to East Tokyo.

The appetizers and other hot food off the Thai and Japanese menus were mediocre. The sushi was good, but I can find good sushi at places where there is customer service.

Originally, having a hibachi meal meant that we had to drive all the way into Hackensack just to experience the flavour. Thankfully we managed to find a place closer to home in Mahwah, NJ. East Tokyo fills that void.

The place is separated into two sections--the sushi bar and the hibachi room. Most of the times we opt to go the hibachi room since we love the food as well as the entertainment. The decor adds the the ambience of the whole experience. The hostess will announce your presence into the hibachi room by banging on a drum. From there she leads you to your designated section. The chef comes out with your order and prepares the meal right in front of you doing tricks along the way. A meal per person can cost between $20-$30, so for us a dinner for three will usually cost $90 in the end. It's expensive but well worth it as we are always filled.

A side note: children 12 and under get their meals for 1/2 price, and they are a pretty hefty portion as well.

The sushi section is for those who wish to order other things from the menu. You can still get your hibachi meals without the ceremony if you like. The fish is always fresh and I love the variety of selections that are available.

The staff is very friendly and cordial. I really appreciate how they try to make the whole experience as authentic as possible.

I've enjoyed all the time I've been at East Tokyo and know that whenever we do eat there, we will never be disappointed with the outcome.

PROS: Hibachi entertainment, fresh food
CONS: none

My family visits East Tokyo whenever we get the yearning to have hibachi meals. Located in a large strip mall in Mahwah, there is plenty of free parking right outside the establishment. They are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

This is a non-smoking restaurant, and when you walk in the space is separated into two rooms--one with the sushi bar, several tables, and small hibachi stations. In the other room, just down one step, are several larger hibachi stations. There is plenty of space for a decent-sized party to enjoy a flavorful meal.

East Tokyo offers specials daily--they have fresh fish, so one time we requested a special that was out for the day. The hibachi is well-executed by skilled chefs who cook chicken, steak, lobster, shrimp, and scallops to perfection. Everything is delicious and the portions are very filling.

Typically a hibachi meal, for my family of three, runs about $90. It is not cheap! They do have a children's meal that is half price of the , but still very generous in its portions. This meal is for children 12 and under.

Back in the sushi bar, the sushi selections are interesting and different from the standard fare, if you wish to get creative with your choices. For example, the Mahwah roll was a tempura, crab, lettuce, and a spicy kick to it! Their sashmi is fresh and decoratively served on a platter.

The staff is very friendly and remembers customers like us who come in regularly. East Tokyo definitely has repeat clientele and I appreciate their attention to detail with my food, as well as the courteous customer service.

I recommend East Tokyo for those searching for a Japanese Steak House and Sushi eatery that won't break the bank and is closer to home than some rival, more franchise-based Japanese Steak Houses. You won't be disappointed with the food and service at East Tokyo!

PROS: Great hibachi!
