:( Unfortunately, I can't give any stars. Dr. Dan was indeed nice and good with me, but I feel Ho Ho kus vet is just looking for the Bergen County Money that most people in the area have. I brought my cat in due to the fact that he was going blind and losing weight at a fast pace. He had/has the classic signs of Hypertension with CRF. I was instructed to up his protein and a ultra sound was recommended. I was under the assumption that my cat had stomach cancer and/ or was anemic and I just wanted him to be happy with what time he had left. I was doing the exact opposite of what is reccomended and while I was doing this, his blindess could have been saved. He is now completely blind and still fighting with a failing kidney. I just wish I had researched his symptoms instead of taking him to Ho Ho Kus vet where every illness is "cancer"

What I could have known:
Hypertension, abnormally high blood pressure, can be either a cause of CRF or be caused by CRF. It occurs when the kidneys are unable to excrete sufficient quantities of sodium. It can be diagnosed by taking the cat's blood pressure or by an ophthalmologist. Hypertension can cause further kidney damage or damage to other internal organs, cardiovascular problems, seizures, retinal lesions, retinal detachment and blindness.

Retinal detachment, in which the retinas develop cysts and detach, is common in CRF cats. Unfortunately, visual impairment may not be recognized until retinal detachment occurs and the cat becomes blind and disoriented. This condition is usually treatable and can be controlled with medication if hypertension is diagnosed early.

If blindness caused by detached retinae occurs, it can sometimes be reversed partially or even fully if high blood pressure medication is given within a day or so of onset. It is crucial to take your cat to your veterinarian as soon as possible if you suspect that your cat is having vision problems.

I have taken my four cats to Dr. Dan for quite some time now. One was older and got sick. Dr. Dan was wonderful in dealing with my sadness as well as my childrens angst. He was kind loving compassionate while he put my beloved "child" to sleep. I will never forget that since my baby was mine for 18 years. I trust him completely with my animals and would not go anyplace else. Had a horrible experience with Oradell animal hospital by a vet who manhandled my sick cat. He never showed aggression toward anyone but them.(Made me give a $1000. deposit cash to treat my dying animal or else they would make us leave). Hohokus talked sweetly to him and he was putty in their hands. Good prices, but even if they charged a fortune I would not go anyplace else.

My grandmother first turned me on to this veterinary hospital when they were taking care of her two dogs. I have been taking my cats there ever since. Their care and concern for each animal that they meet are just top notch; we couldn't ask for more.
I just went through a VERY difficult time with a pretty young cat where she had to be hospitalized at Oradell Animal Hospital. As soon as I could, I transferred my cat to HHK, and there, I felt true personal care for my little cat. Communication between Dr. Dan and me was fantastic (Dr. Dan is a wonderful, talkative veterinarian), and we were even allowed to come and visit with her at any time of day as long as we gave a heads up that we were coming. The staff were also wonderful to us; giving us encouragement and loving her as we tried to discover what was wrong with her. Ultimately, she had to be put to sleep; and the staff were wonderful then too. Dr. Dan was so helpful in the situation, and we now know that she was truly cared for. We've even received a sympathy card from them.
Pricing is extremely reasonable too; costs are very low compared to other hospitals, and we all love that!

I would never think of taking my animals to anywhere else than HHK Veterinary Hospital.

I was recommended years ago from a friend. I have been through good times and bad with them. After the deaths of my 2 dogs a little over a year apart, one 12yr old sick dog and one 17month old puppy that died in a freak accident they have been the most awesome people. I have two puppies now and when I come in the girls at the front desk get so excited and are so nice and courteous. The doctors are awesome and the girls in the back are awesome as well. They treat you and your animals like you are family. They treat you with such respect and kindness. I absolutely love it there and cannot recommend any other place to go. Their fees are very reasonable as well, which is very important especially with the times we are going through now. I could go on and on. I can't say enough great things about them. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR THE BEST VET CARE POSSIBLE FOR YOUR ANIMALS GO TO HO-HO-KUS VET HOSPITAL. =)

3 people in town recommended them when we first got our dog and now I know why. Everyone in the office is great and so knowledgeable. They all have a true love for animals and treat and care for them as if my dog was their own. My dog LOVES going there and seeing all of his favorite techs. They are by far one of the most affordable offices in the area too. We had initially gone to a vet closer to home but were very displeased with him and he charged so much more for doing so much less. I highly recommend them - I'm sure you will be just as pleased as I am.

On the advice of a neighbor, we tried HVH for our keeshond puppy and got Dr. Dan. The first thing he did was get down on the floor to play with our puppy (and check her out at the same time, of course)-after a few visits, our pup loves going there-not only are the staff and Dr., Dan professional-they're nice. Wonderful to our pet, ready to answer our questions-and fair in price which is not common in this area (we're on our fifth dog and have used several vets) Our dog awards them four tail wags out of 4.

Dr. Schruer and his staff has cared for 6 of my pets over the many years and I would never go anywhere else. He has cared for every one as if they were his very own. His knowledge and expertise are extraordinary and I have always trusted his judgment implicitly. I have heard horror stories with other vets and animals and it makes me all the more thankful to know that my animals are being cared for by the best. The staff is friendly and always greets my pet is if they were a part of their family.

I have been taking my two dogs to Mark Schreur for 4 years and I could not be any happier with him or the facility. Dr. Schreur is an excellent vet! He has always properly diagnosed and treated all my animals. He is always friendly and wonderful with my pets. My one dog goes crazy when she walks through the door with her tail wagging. The staff is also friendly and always gives her lots of love and cookies. The facility is spanking clean! I would recommend Dr. Schreur and his staff to anyone. His excellence can not be surpassed.

There are times when we need to board our cat as we go away on vacation. That's we are grateful for Ho Ho Kus Veterinary Hospital.

I know our cat doesn't like going there just because she's scared of everyone and other animals, but the staff makes sure that she is well taken care of. I find it that when we need to board her that it's usually a good time for her to also get her vaccinations. It's best to give the staff these special instructions and repeat it more than once so they actually make a note of it.

I've also noticed that there are new people on the staff which makes a big difefrence. They are very kind, patient and helpful. The doctors do their best to ensure that our pet is as healthy as can be. We last took our cat to get a leukemia shot and was given thorough instructions on how to administer our cat's medication. I was extremely grateful for the advice since I'm a new pet owner myself. Every bit of working knowledge helps.

The boarding of pets isn't as much as I thought it would be. In fact it's quite reasonable in price, something that always surprises me whenever I get the bill at the end. Vaccinations do cost a lot more but if you want to make sure that your pet is getting the best treatment, I'm sure you will pay for what is needed. The people at Ho Ho Kus Veterinary make sure they do that job.

PROS: Friendly staff
CONS: I don't know how the animals are boarded

My family has used Ho Ho Kus Veterinary Hospital for years--we stumbled upon it when my childhood pet was ill and have used it ever since. Dr. Mark A. Schreur is the head of the hospital and he has assembled a friendly, competent staff to care for your animals.

The hospital has boarding services for your pets if you need to use them while on vacation. Prices for boarding your pet are relatively reasonable. If your pet is boarded, the staff ensures that your animal will be able to "stretch its legs" daily and move around the facility. Whenever I have taken my cat to be boarded, she always returns to me safely and very clean.

The front desk is manned by a few employees and you have to make sure that if you want certain things done, such as vaccinations, that you triple check that they will be done. I have found that vaccinations I have requested to be given to my cat during her boarding were not done. Make sure you find out before you take your pet home!

They do a fabulous cleaning of pets' teeth as well. Your pet does not need to stay overnight after having its teeth cleaned.

Currently, the staff is the nicest I've seen in all my years of patronizing this veterinarian. I hope all of the people remain on staff!

There is free parking outside of the hospital entrance, as well as nearby.
