STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORE, especially for non-guitar needs!!! Caveat emptor! I cannot say enough to warn you about this business.

They SEEM nice, especially Ken, the store manager. But if something goes wrong and you're not satisfied, they will NOT guarantee your satisfaction. They get very nasty. We are horrified. Have never been treated like this by any business before.

Our Story:
My son needed a complete overhaul of his clarinet, at least according to The Music Place (cleaning, recorking, all new pads, even a new case). When all was said and done, we spent over $200, about $156 minus the case.

When we got the clarinet back, I took a quick look at it. I took a quick finger swab only to have grayish gook come off. (They insisted it was cork grease, but it was in a location where there shouldn't have been cork grease.) I sent it back to be recleaned. The second time I picked it up, it was not completely clean, but improved, so I took it home.

My son excitedly put the clarinet together and tried to play it, only to find it unplayable. After multitudinous phone calls and sending the instrument back two more times, they refused to acknowledge there was anything wrong. Even my son's music teacher tried the instrument and confirmed it was faulty, sending in a note detailing the problem areas.

Finally I took the thing to another tech at another music store more than an hour from TMP. They said they'd never seen such shoddy work: excessive glue and the pads weren't seated properly, therefore a seal could not be achieved and sound was difficult to produce. It would take $250 to bring our instrument up to standards. It's not resellable, except maybe for parts. Now we're stuck buying a new instrument.

TMP refuses to refund my money AND refuses to speak to the other tech. They are downright unprofessional. I could go on and on, telling you the things that were said to me, but my space is limited here. Suffice it to say, the next to last conversation had me in tears. Filed a complaint with the BBB.

This is a great place for if you are in their inside crowd. It's a great place if you've been a guitarist for years and hang around the store.

However; they are not welcoming to new customers who walk in! Many employees will marginalize their service to you or act awkwardly if you are new. I have went there for years, and I see it almost every time a unknown customer walks in the door!
The same people never, ever recognize me (although I've went there for a decade)! haha

I started going there when they had a small selection of sheet music (which is real small now). Afterwards, I tried ordering music through them direct from their warehouse. They said it should be there in a week and if there were any problems, they would call. It took me two months to get my music! Each time I called, it was the same person (who took my order and had received calls from me before), who had no idea about my music that was needed for an important event.

Then I tried buying a guitar from them when I started to play... I obviously had no idea what to look for in a guitar. I found out later that the guitar they sold me was quite broken, defected, and that it wasn't very playable at all!

There are some nice people who work there, but the company sucks its' income from their music teachers and their marked-up, commissioned sales.

I brought in my 20 year old acoustic guitar for a revamp. They cleaned it, put on new strings, tuned it, adjusted the neck and basically made it look brand new while I waited. Everyone was extremely friendly and professional. I decided (without any prompting) to buy a guitar for my son while I was there. They set me up with everything I needed. I thought the service was exceptional. Now I'm thinking of taking guitar lessons from them!

I've had the privilege of working at The Music Place, my mother bought our first piano when Tom owned the place. I began taking lesson's every friday nights at 7:30 for the next 5 years, after that i applied almost three times before they would hire me. I started out as a substitute teacher and then i worked on the floor, from time to time i would still sub for a teacher who's sick. The teachers are very dedicated and approachable who is able to impart a great deal of knowledge. What separates The Music Place from other music store is its dedication to customer service, though this is my opinion however during my time as an employee this was heavily emphasized and i did my best to uphold that principle.

The music place has been there a long time, exactly how long i don't know. I've read some of the reviews, one person was complaining bout the customer service is bad and they were ignored. I can't say i blame them because those things happen, it might of been that they were busy with incoming inventory or following up sales from the previous nights, just cause there's no one in the store and its just one customer and the crew it doesn't mean that they aren't pre occupied although, i do understand how that feels. I am sorry for the experience you've had and yes they did miss out on two sales and probably would of made a difference at end of day sales report.

Another dude was stating how TMP lacked stuff that are accesories such as pick gaurd for a strat. Ok well during the time i worked there this was a problem but easily remedied, all i can say is that, if you can't wait for the part to be ordered then go to GC or SAM ASH, i really don't care ...your free to choose. anyway this is how it goes, if they don't have it they can get it, you just have to wait, it comes within 3 to 5 days if its in stock. That goes for any items in the store, if they don't have a guitar in stock they can order the one you want given that they deal with a certain company if not then you have to try others. The music place deals with items than can be sold fast, obscure items that rarely sell are seldom to be ordered however

I'm not gonna lie, The Music Place isn't perfect but it sure doesn't live up to the corporate level persona. The store is down to earth and friendly. If they were doing something wrong they would of been out of business years ago. The music place creates a atmosphere of family and security that is hard to find in bigger stores. The professional musicians will deal with the big names but the to be musicians they will have there first start here at the local music shop. Kids during vacation would come down to play on the Roland TD4, jam out on the guitars, buy one string or a pack of strings. Despite the fact that in can be irritating to deal with a small sale we never turn them away. Both adult and children would come here to take there weekly guitar, piano, voice, drum, lessons
What the music place's primary directive is to take care of the customers, we try our best to give the best but there are times that we can't please everyone. During the time i worked there this principle was heavily emphasized and i did my very best to help the customers, i'm not gonna lie there are times that i turned away customers cause of my attitude i will regret that because i made a bad experience but nevertheless I've strived to help a customer to the best of my ability.

People will have bad opinions and they are entitled to that. Objectively i see more of the positive than the negative. I just hope that The Music Place will continue to up hold the principles that they believe in and i hope that they will still be the local music store.

Pros: Great Environment for Family and to be rockstars

Cons: Its a Small Shop...

Can't say much other than I walked in there ready to buy 2 guitars. I was with my son. He wanted an electric guitar for his birthday. I decided to get myself one also. We were in that store with NO other customers for about 45 minutes. The employees couldn't be bothered to help us. We did get to check out the guitars though. We just weren't able to buy any at The Music Place. We went to Cherry Hill for that.

It's a shame because I prefer to deal with the small business over the big box stores. Not in this case. Everytime I tried to get the attention of an employee, they quickly looked away. Boss must have been away or told the employees "Whoa, you're selling too much stuff today, knock it off or I'm going to have place an order for more merchandise".

They missed out on 2 guitar sales that day as well as weekly lessons for 2.

The Music Place has been in Berlin for years, and quite frankly if they were horrible in any aspect that has been named here, they would have been out of business years ago. It is the only place in the area that services the musical community, and they do so to the best of their ability. They try to accomodate their customers to the best of their ability, but obviously cannot please everyone. Musicians are apt to being tempermental anyway, so please take the other reivews for what they are; "opinions". The bottom line is, if you want to drive up to Cherry Hill and go into the "Home Depot" of musical stores, then by all means do so. But if you want a more personal approach, then maybe this is the store for you. The lessons are also given by individuals who are very passionate about their craft. Highly recommend.

My son loves it here. He takes guitar lessons and the instructors are so great. They jam to lots of great rock music and teach you any song you request to learn. The staff is very dedicated. They have a limited retail selection. They do minor repairs on instruments and are very knowledgable.

Living in Berlin, I have been to this store many times. When there was no place else to shop for your musical/instrumental needs, it was ok to go here. Now, with Guitar Center in Cherry Hill, going to Music Place should only be an act of desperation if you need strings real fast, etc. I just called to see if they had any pick guards for a Fender Strat and they only have 1 in stock. Guitar Center has at least 15 different styles to choose from. Why pay for their overhead? Basically, it's just not smart business practice to shop at the small stores. Financially, it is better for you to get a better price and sacrifice the customer service end of it. I do not want to pay more money for an item because the salesman is nice. Would you buy a car that way? Same concept.

I have yet to find a music store that beats The Music Place in terms of selection, service, and price. They have a huge selection of acoustic and electric guitars, friendly service, and they have very competitive pricing. The best thing about this store is their friendly, personal service. You can't find that at any of the "Big Box" stores around here. FIVE STARS!!!!

The customer service that is offered at this store is appalling. I have never encountered a more horribly structured enviroment of a business. Customer satisfaction is horrible and they will do nothing to satisfy the customer. Staff is poorly trained and has a lack there of any type of knowledge when it comes to selling or even slightly informing you of any instrument. When they are telling you something about the insturment most likely it is wrong or misleading and the owner has no intentions of satisfying his customers situations at ALL.

This is absolutely the best music store that I have ever dealt with. The prices are great and the selection is outstanding. The management and sales staff go the extra mile to make sure that their customers are satisfied. After dealing with the large chain stores and online retailers, there is no comparison to their service and selection. Their guitar tech is the best around, too. Don't waste your time at the big box stores or shopping online. This store is the best around.

If this store wasn't so faraway from my home, I would frequent it more often. The staff here are phenomenal; they are friendly, courteous, and very helpful. The prices of most items are cheaper than at other music stores, because you don't pay for the "dressy" atmosphere some competitors try to create. (This store is no-frills, but still my favorite!) Music lessons are also offered here. The rates are relatively affordable, and occasionally they offer a free first lesson. All of the teachers are very energetic, and I would recommend those who I have dealt with.
