When I went to The Gem Mine I went with my daughter who was sent their by her college art teacher. When we got there I was asking for things off of my daughters list. Mary asked we the items were for and told my daughter it was her responsibility to ask the questions and find the items off of the list. She was right. She was very knowledgeable and very helpful to my daughter. I just loved the store since I am a jewelry maker. I am saddened to hear that Mary has passed on and will miss her straight forward attitude. God Bless her.

Mary may have been a bit coarse with some people, I myself enjoyed a wonderful relationship with her. I would be there for hours looking at everything, trying to find the right pieces for my jewelry or some good stuff to use in my healing practice- Mary was always helpful, encouraging and sharp as a tack! Every once in a while she had something waiting for me, something she knew I would love- and I always did. The stones, jewelry and tools were the main draw, but I ALWAYS looked forward to seeing Mary and Thea. Alas, Mary passed away in Sept. and I am still in mourning. RIP Mary - rock on! Oh and go to the shop, you will never find another like it.

This is a great store for lovers of rocks, minerals, fossils and shells. Teachers in particular will appreciate the knowledge of the store owners. I have purchased many specimens including gifts for my students. The Gem Mine is a rare find so don't be put off by Mary; she may be a bit eccentric, but like her collection she's one of a kind!

The Gem Mine should really be a five-star rating because the items are so beautiful and truly precious. Prices are good too. BUT and it's a BIG BUT -- the woman named Mary is truly rude. Just as the other reviewer wrote. She is abrasive and curt in her customer manner and she has no sense of being welcoming and friendly. I have visited this shop twice -- with intent to buy -- but the brisk manner turned me away. I didn't want to make a snap judgment but this other reviewer's comments on Mary confirmed my opinion. I still want to buy in spite of Mary but be warned this shop is not friendly. Even with only two customers inside, the place is not welcoming. I give it only one star for unsatisfactory customer service, it should be a five.

When we lived in the area, we visited The Gem Mine all the time; nice restaurants in the area, etc. Mary and Thea always welcomed us ... I used to browse for a long time because I enjoyed looking at all the displays in the store; it's like the Museum of Natural History ... but you can bring the stuff home with you! The jewelry is great; in particular, my wife loves the Michael Michaud jewelry and we bought some really nice pieces there and also their really unique vintage and other merchandise and also over the years, also had them do repairs, etc.

Anyway, two years ago, we finally retired and moved south. However, where we move to there just aren't any places as nice as The Gem Mine, so when I needed a gift I would call Mary and we would discuss it and work out the details with her and Thea and confirm by email [ gemtd@optonline,net ]. We have done this several times and it has worked out really well. And today, I received the most spectacular Michael Michaud Lilac necklace to give to my wife for Christmas! Mary and Thea really have a GREAT eye and great judgement.

We are really pleased because they have been so helpful and made our gift giving very easy.

A beautiful collection of nowhere-else-to-be-found gems and jewelry, including estate collections and made to order jewelry by Thea, daughter of Mary. We have shopped there for 37 years, including Teaneck, NJ where they were originally, and continue to do so. They are very pleasant people.

This is a beautiful store with lovely gems, and that is why I am giving it the 2 stars. I visit family in NJ and have often stopped in here, even bought a couple pieces. I went in there today however looking forward to admiring the gems and was treated very poorly by Mary. I just ran my fingers against the beautiful amethyst she had out and she said "don't put too much pressure on the stones because they're fragile" so i said "yes". I work a lot with crystals, and believe me they are not fragile. touching it will not damage it! You'd have to drop it for it to break. And i would never consider buying a stone without touching it first, that's the beauty of a stone. a moment later i touched a different piece and she nastily said "don't touch the stones!" "I would prefer you didn't as they could break" Lousy, lousy, rude person. not deserving of having her own store with such beautiful gems. hard for me to write this review without using any profanity because i am mad. It is a store, Mary, the customers have a right to touch the objects that are out. If you don't want that, then put them behind the counter! Thanks for making me feel so bad when all I did was admire your stones. I'll spend my money in a place with a nicer staff.
