The old Casual Male was great. I went into the new store this week because they combined it with Rochester, and it was horrible. Not nearly the same size of selection that it used to be. They devided the store in half and there is more Rochester (expensive) product than what I was lead to believe. The employees at the old store said it would be 75% of their product and 25% Rochester and this is just not true. I wil not go back. I will drive down 17 and go to the East Rutherford store. Or better yet go to the outlet in Jackson.

It's nice to go into a store that is designed to fit a full fledged big man instead of hoping you can find something that only looks reasonably tight on you. The thing is, being in such a niche, they have to maximize their profits, so you are supposed to get the maximum sales assault too, to add socks and other accessories or open a credit account. The extent to which the salesperson lets you shop untethered is the extent to which they are not following the more aggressive tactics the upper management tiers promote. And God bless them (the sales folks) for it! It has been a pleasurably low pressure experience in this and the other area Causal Male XL locations because the sales associates make their presence known with a greeting as you enter, an initial inquiry into how they may help you, and stay near, but doesn't ride herd on you, or try to talk you into a dozen different options. One bad example is the Men's Wearhouse where they line up at the door to swoop down on you like falcons as you cross the threshold.

I know if I'm there for pajamas or cologne. Perhaps there are an abundance of steerable lemmings, and the competition is greater than ever in these times, but I seek to establish ASAP that I'm not one of them when I come in the door. Not necessary here. Unfortunately, there is high turn over in retail jobs in general, and here specially, so you may not see that pleasant salesperson for long.

Update: Oct 1, 2012:
The small Casual Male store on the south side of Route 17 at Midland Ave moved across to the Northbound side, almost directly across the road. It has expanded to, encompass in-store the long owned Rochester Big and Tall inventory, which pushes the already pricey average higher. They call this location XL Dimension and the interior was changed yet again. If you want the clearance ( reasonably priced) merchandise they lead you to a hideaway area - I personally thinks it makes one look like a cheapskate, but turns out the $10 a pair socks and $70 belts are back there too. Yeah!
