Morris-Sussex Pet Supply needs to get a new owner
by Susan R.
I used to go to this store for several years, but finally got so turned off by and sick of the rude man who owns this store, that i stopped going here.I got sick of his surly attitude, refusal to take returns and general total lack of regard or appreciation for his customers. I have lived in the area for many years and personally cannot believe this store is still open. Especially now that there's lots of competition in the area from other stores. When this place finally closes, I will stand up and applaud.

Morris-Sussex Pet Supply has VERY rude employees!
by Aimee N.
I have not seen any animal abuse/neglect first hand so far... but then I try to avoid looking at the live animal section in ALL of the pet stores that I shop at, because I always find SOMETHING that upsets me. The staff at MSPS is, however, always notoriously rude, without fail, every time I've been in this store. I just called them in fact, just a moment ago, to ask if I could get a price on an item. The response "yeah, if I can find it", full of attitude. Real nice. UNFORTUNATELY... as of late they've had the best prices on the items I need for my dogs each month, and in these hard times I HAVE to save money where I can. MSPS has the item I need today for 45 bucks, where as the Pet Co in the Roxbury mall has it for 62 bucks. And since Pet Co will no longer price match without an advertised price, I'm giving my money to the rude people over the usually friendly people in Pet Co. That's a HUGE difference in price.

Decent at best
by Vanessa L.
This pet store does have a large variety of supplies and cages, but that's all I really go here for. The animals are kept in decent condition, save for a few big exceptions. The rats for example, are kept in overcrowded cages and allowed to breed like crazy, which leads to inbreeding, disease and the possibility that you'll take home a pregnant rat without knowing it. They seem to hire any idiot from the side of the road. I purchased a ferret from them a few months back, and was assisted by two employees. One honestly seemed like he was stoned and the other acted incredibly smug the entire time. They both claimed to have owned ferrets before, but they had no idea how to tell the gender of my ferret (if they have a "bellybutton," they're a male. It's that simple). If you need supplies, this is a great place. If you need information and pets, go to Petsmart instead.

I can't believe this
by John R.
You are all idiots. Not only is this a quality pet store, it is a realistic one. Just because they wouldn't accept a return (I'm guessing that they had an understandable reason why, you are just to thick to see so, also side note, the owner is male) and because of "diseased animals"? Do any of you understnad mass animal care, it isn't easy, these people are doing a great job. The only diseases the animals have had are most likely wet tail and mites (which is seasonal, and hard to avoid). The animals themselves are cleaned weekly, if not bi- weekly. Petco actually has to buy feeders from MS Pet because of some sort of policy. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, you just have to find the right people to ask about the right subjects ( try finding better info at pet goods or petco, you wont). Just because you didn't get your way while visiting a store doesn't make it a bad place, you just need to learn how the world works (an example would be "you break it, you buy it", duh).

Roxbury Board of Health /Cruelty to Animals should be contacted
by Lisa M.
After reading these reviews I am disappointed that they are not being investigated for cruelty to animals and that the Roxbury Board of Health doesn't do something about the diseased animals.

They don't answer thier phones
by Jen L.
I tried to call this morning to make sure they have the cat litter I buy, before making the nearly 20 mile trip. Can't get through to a live person. Seems easier to buy locally and pay more at this point. Sorry you've lost a customer.

Response to R. Muck's review
by Mary Ann B.
Thank you for the information you provided. I always thought that the staff was a bit strange, but I didn't know they were cruel as well.
I will be reporting them the next time I make my PETA donation. Let the investigation begin!
I always hoped they could stay in business and not be pushed out by the major pet stores, but no more.
I will travel as far as I must in order to get supplies, but I will never give them my business again..

Dying animals, lack of compassion
by Muck R.
I really want to like this place. For one it carries Oxbox products at a good price (9.00 a bag) for my rabbit. It is clean and doesn't smell. It's "the little guy" to the nearby Petgoods and Petco. Unfortunately the people that work there fall into three categories: 1. ignorant teens or pimply undergrads 2. stressed-out and underpaid martyrs fighting for the malnurished animals and 3. the authority figures who from my encounters (and the other reviewers' testimonials) seem to have no love for animals or pet owners. The boss in a grizzled swaggering trophy hunter (yeah, really). He is gruff and when I was there was bragging about all the animals he killed and has stuffed upstairs. They have a great collection of bunnies which they sell for $10 to rabbit lovers and when they don't sell fast enough to SNAKES. A particularly disturbing visit was the time there were three rabbits basically dying in their pen: one was GUSHING sludge out of his rectum the other had diarreha all over his back legs and the third was panting and skittish. The attendant said, "I told them not to leave them pellets there all day". While there we looked up the symptoms on our iphone: we informed the staff that the bunnies were dying from a completely preventable condition of malnutrition due to poor diet (not enough fiber: hay and vegetables). I asked, "What do you do with the sick animals?" Yup, they go straight to the snakes as live prey. So basically, they get these adorable young rabbits, don't feed them right, get them sick, and then feed them as live bait to gigantic predators. I asked the staff to confirm this and they just laughed sadistically or at my foolish compassion. My question is, why do they want to run a pet store if they have no respect for animals or customers? I go here because I hate corporations and I need oxbow out here in the boonies. When you talk to the owner it's like he's from some old World War II generation that wasn't raised to have respect for animals as individuals. I think it is pointless to talk to him, we just have to wait for red-faced arrogant relics like him to die out. Hopefully he'll be reincarnated as a sick rabbit in his next life.

Will not see my business ever again.
by Craig P.
Bought a quality dog collar there in mid fall of 2008. The collar fell apart ( all but one out of four rivets came apart). When I brought it back for an exchange, the owner said that she would not exchange it and have it fixed else where.
I can safely say that they will never see me or my money in there again since the do not stand behind the products they sell. I will go just down rt 10 to the other pet stores since they stand behind the products they sell.

I will never go back!
by Kristen C.
I used to frequent the Morris-Sussex Pet Supply for fish supplies for my step-son. Unfortunately, everytime I went into the store to purchase fish they died within three days. When I addressed this with the store manager not only was he RUDE, but he was also completely disrespectful. When I called the owner to advise him of the store managers poor customer service skills I realized where the manager gets them from. I will never go back to this store.

Clean Store
by Elizabeth S.
I have been buying parrot food here for many years. This store is one of the CLEANEST stores I have been in. Maybe the staff is not the friendliest but if you engage the owner in conversation he will do his best to help you. I look at it this way, yes it would be great to be welcomed warmly, but how many stores do you visit where this happens?

Last time I will ever go to Morris Sussex Pet Supply
by M K.
I have gone to this store for 20 years because of its location...certainly not because of the customer service. Today, when I had a hummingbird feeder that broke at the neck of the glass feeder jar, I tried to exchange it for an unbroken feeder, but I didn't have the receipt. The response was, too bad, no receipt no exchange and not even in a kind and caring fashion. The attitude was snotty, the girl behind the counter clearly doesn't care if the store loses loyal customers. It's not like there aren't 2 other superstores here in Roxbury Township to go to. I will take my business elsewhere, with no hesitation, no regrets. The owner is an angry man and his store is living on borrowed time.

Owner Disrespectful - Sickly Animals
by Stacey J.
Owner is hostile toward customers. Some employees are OK - but I've heard owner chastise employee for providing helpful information. Purchased 3 rabbits as pets and they all died. Since then have gone back for supplies you can't find elsewhere and have even seen dead rabbits in the tank at the store. Wish there was another store that sold the same things - such as full bails of hay. This store does not even deserve one star! Stay away if you can!

Great service bad communication...
by Victoria S.
I just got a guinea pig from this store. I thought "oh they have great friendly service. They have an awesome selection of pet supplies. I want a pet!" I brought a new guinea pig home to accompany my other female guinea pig. I went to play with my original pet and noticed hair loss...I spent 95 dollars at the vet to find my original pet had ring worm!!! from my new pet. Then one week later what do I find the new GP had BABIES!!!! I bought this pet not knowing or being told that the pets were intermingled and now I have to spend more money if this baby gets ringworm!!! I strongly don't recomend geting pets from this store and will never return for that.
*good experience bad aftermath.
*they didn't meet my expectations...I expected the pets to be as great as the service and products:(

Unfriendly, overpriced, poor customer service
by Anonymous
Unfortunately, this is the only place in the area to buy feeder rats for my snake. They never have large rats available, so one employee suggested buying 2 rats, and when I asked what happens if the snake doesn't eat both, she said that I could bring the other back the next day for store credit (sorry, no refunds here). The snake didn't eat the second rat, so I took it back, but was told by someone else that they've never accepted returns on live animals. So what am I supposed to do with this rat? They'll take it, but not give me anything for it, which makes no sense because their receipts say "Store credit within 30 days" and nowhere does it say they don't take live animals back. If it was a health issue, they wouldn't take my rat at all. They'll take it, I'm just out the money and fuming because they were all rude about it. I've purchased other things here too, for my dogs, which are always overpriced, and when you walk in, you're often ignored or someone gets nasty with you when you ask for help because they're "busy" with something else. Bottom line, avoid this place if you can.

Unfriendly store and lack of knowledge
by Jason N.
I recently visited this store to purchase fish to set up a new tank. I found the employees to be extremely unfriendly. The woman that "assisted" me had an attitude that seemed to indicate that I was bothering her. I asked questions and she had no answers. There was an older "gentleman" at the cash register who seemed to share the same lack of personality and terrible attitude. I purchased 8 fish from them, 7 died within 3 days. I brought a water sample to another pet store in the area. The water was fine - - the fish I purchased were not healthy. If for no other reason, because of the employees pathetic attitude, I will not give Morris Sussex Pet Supply any more business.

Owner not customer friendly
by D S.
I have years ago visited the store. I saw first hand how he talked down to his employees and have had several whom transferred to local stores verify my perception.I will travel 3 miles farther and pay 25% more on prices rather than patronize this mans place. He is the most unfriendly, cold, stuck up individual I've ever seen. He does not accomodate his customers at all. He will not budge.

While browsing their fish supply area, I accidentally broke a fishtank ornament. About 15 later, upon paying from my cat food, the man at the counter pulled up the broken item and asked me how I intended to take care of it. I paid them but will never return there again.
PROS: They are in a good location, right off Rt 10.
CONS: Unfriendly Staff, Dirty Shop.

unkept pets
by Lisa C.
I purchased 2 guinea pigs for my kids nearly 4 weeks ago, a week after having them patches of fur began to fall off one of them. A week later I took them to the vet and found out they had fur mites. These guinea pigs that cost $5.00 each turned out to be $432.00 for vet visit and treatment. Also after speaking to a women at the store to inform her of their problem, I was told the manager decided to buy a cheap shipment of snakes which was the carrier of the mites that transferred them to the other animals. The staff on top of it are very unknowledgable as I asked for two females but to only find out later from the vet that I was given one male one female which will also cost more money to get the male fixed.

Morris Sussex Pet Supply has just about anything you need for your cat, dog or exotic pet. The staff is very knowledgeable too. They have a whole floor dedicated to aquariums and another separate room of birds only. They also have products for fish ponds. Lots of exotic pets and small furries too. They gave me good advice when I was trying to house break some feral cats.

This is a good sized store though smaller than the chain stores. The often have interesting pets, like rabbits around Easter time. They have a nice fish department too. They have a large selection of dog collars and leases. Pets are always welcome in the store and on any given day you'll see plenty of them.
