If you enjoy the old-world feel of neighborhood curiosity shops, the Towne Crier in Midland Park should be a destination of yours. I discovered this independently-owned gift shop during my Beanie Baby craze. The owner was so friendly and talktative--she offered to let me know if my favorite Beanies were delivered into the store.

Inside is an eclectic collection of treasures and gifts--there are china items, handpainted wood decor, sterling silver jewelry...the gifts always change. I had fun poking around the merchandise on the shelves. The store has a cluttered, "Granny's Attic" kind of feel. This isn't an upscale snooty gift boutique--it has a welcoming feel and interesting items for sale. I purchased a bevy of Beanies from this store because they were priced right and the seller wasn't trying to gauge customers during the Beanie Baby frenzy.

You can find the Towne Crier on Central Avenue--just look for the white-painted display window at the front of the store. Parking is on the street and is free. Have fun shopping!

PROS: Old world charm.
