I should have taken the time to go to NYC to get my haircut. This is not the place to go if you have natural 4c/4b type African American hair. While I'm sure the stylist is very skilled at doing hair, he either doesn't do my type of hair or just had an off day. I asked to have textured hair cut off since I spent the last year growing out a little over 6 inches of hair. I am thankful that he didn't take off too much (expect in the front which is way shorter than the rest of the hair) at least I have enough hair left to get it fixed. Which means that now I have to pay $110 on top of the $85 I paid for this half ass hair cut. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS SALON DOES NOT GIVE REFUNDS. No one goes into a salon thinking they are going to want a refund until they see that the service was not worth the price they paid. They will offer to redo it. Which is fine if I just went in for a blow dry or a up-do or something like that. But who in their right mind is going to go in and be butchered for a second time and end up with even less hair on their head. No thanks.

After the haircut some parts of my hair are 5 inches long, others are 3 inches and then there's the very front that's 2 inches (pissed about that). The front of my hair was about 4 inches long, 2 inches shorter than the rest of my hair because of breakage due to pulling it back with bands. No more than an 1/2 an inch had to be taken off. Because of the way my hair shrinks it now looks like it's about 1/2 long in the front when it dries. I have to say that I could live with the hair not being cut enough, but it's the front where he took off too much that really makes me want scream. I'm really kicking myself about not just taking a day off to go into the City and having one of my friends from the salon where I use to work cut it. Even though there are a over 6 stylist in my friend's salon, there are only two of them that would even tackle my type of hair without it being relaxed straight. While the stylist at La Jolie was very nice and accommodating he simply couldn't handle or didn't want to handle my type of hair. I should have stopped him when he didn't blow my hair out straight first, but I just thought that he had a different technique. Lesson learned for me. I really respect the 4 salons I've went to previous that told me they simply weren't experienced in dealing with my natural hair. Now I have to wear a wig until September 26th, which is the earliest appointment I could get in New York, unless someone cancels.

I apprenticed under some great stylists and colorists from Vidal Sassoon for over 3 years. Which is why I will not name the stylist here. Just take my word, if you have 4b/4c hair types, look elsewhere. Find another natural to recommend a stylist to you. Don't do what I did out of desperation and laziness.

Oh, I gave 1 star because of the shampoo.

I have been going to La Jolie for several years and I have finally had enough - I will never go back there again. Each time I find a stylist I like from among the many they have to offer (they are a large operation, but I don't know that is a good thing), she leaves and I have to start over with someone new. This last visit to La Jolie, with a new stylist, was a disaster. I asked the woman to cut my hair to shoulder length (I had been growing it out for a long time and was looking forward to cutting off about 5 inches), but she did not do what I asked. Instead, she cut my hair down to only about 1-2 inches on the back of my head and by the time I realized what she was doing it was much too late - all my hair was on the floor. I was in shock. She openly acknowledged that this was not the length or style I had asked for, but insisted that it would look "really good". The woman was very nice, but I would rather have a rude stylist who actually gave me the cut I asked for. It will probably take over a year to grown my hair back into the style I want...

The management at La Jolie was very responsive when I contacted them about this issue, and they did refund my money for the cut. In this instance, the business side of La Jolie responded commendably (but, ultimately, I have a hair style that I am unhappy with and I do not think I could trust their salon with my hair again). I say 'in this instance" because I have also had trouble with the business aspect of La Jolie in the past. As another rater seems to have experienced, I also had an occasion where La Jolie informed me they were going to charge more money than initially agreed AFTER the services had been rendered and I had no opportunity to say, "Oh, no thank you then, I'll go somewhere else." I find this to be a very deceptive practice and I have never had a problem like this at other salons.

Ultimately, you can probably get a good haircut from La Jolie, but I'd caution that you need to go in prepared to fight for what you want. Do not let them start cutting until you have double- or triple-checked with the stylists to make sure they understand what you want and that they know they *do not* have liberty to do something else. And make sure to ask up front what they are going to charge you and demand that they honor that agreement when you get to the checkout.

I have very curly hair and every time I get my hair cut, not just a trim, it usually doesn't end well. So, I thought I would try a better place and La Jolie was recommended to me. I called and asked for someone who was familiar with curly hair. I went for a consultation and told them what I wanted, when it came time to do the actual cutting my hair actually looked good. Until I moved away last year I had been a regular customer for over a year and I would highly recommend them. At $55 for a hair cut they are a bit on the high side, but for difficult hair like mine it is well worth the price.

I get my color done at La Jolie. My stylist not only makes my hair look good but she is concerned that it is healthy too. I used to get my hair cut there but I only get a trim and for $55 it's not worth it. You can't really mess up a trim so I'd rather take a chance and spend $13 at a local hair cutting place. But they do the best blow outs!

It is virtually impossible to find a place that does great cuts, and if you live in the surrounding area, look no where else. All of the stylists are very professional and extremely talented. I never know how my hair should look, and these guys are able to do their magic and make it look great every single time. Unlike other shops in the area, this place is without pretense and just provides an amazing, relaxing experience. Although the prices are a bit high, it's worth every penny to know that you'll always come out looking great!

i have super thick, super curly hair that can be blown straight well, but really requires someone to know what they're doing. i called here and requested an appointment with someone who knows curly hair, and was amazed to actually get an expert - not only did he work with curly hair, but his own was super curly as well and he blew it straight. he made me look fabulous, as if i were born with straight hair. never before nor ever since have i gotten as good a blow out as this guy was able to provide. amazing. plus, the prices are reasonable, and the highlights/cuts/waxing isn't too bad either.

I should have taken the time to go to NYC to get my haircut. This is not the place to go if you have natural 4c/4b type African American hair. While I'm sure the stylist is very skilled at doing hair, he either doesn't do my type of hair
