Dr. Baxter and Dr. Gjivoje
Being new to the area, I was thrilled when my neighbor highly recommended going to Bernardsville Animal Hospital. From
the moment I walked in the door, I could smell the cleanliness
which is so important for your pet visits. We were greeted by
smiling faces at the front desk and what was so nice - they
knew my puppy's name and showered him with such attention.
We were not just another pet in the waiting room. I liked that they
took such a good history and showed such interest in my comments. When Dr. Gjivoje came in she wowed us with her
knowledge of my doogy's breed and I knew we had found a
home where my puppy would be treated so well. Looking forward
to our next puppy visit.

Excellent experience! I was recently looking after a friend's dog for a few weeks when the dog got really sick with terrible vomiting. The regular vet was closed that day, so my neighbors recommended the Bernardsville Animal Hospital. I'm so glad they did. They saw us right away, and the staff was so kind and courteous. Naturally, we were feeling terrible and worried because the dog was sick on our watch, but the docs at Bernardsville were able to take X-rays right away and run on the spot blood tests, so they could assess the dog's condition quickly. Dr. Baxter was great! Kind, professional, knowledgeable. Thankfully, the dog got the right treatments and was on the mend quickly. The bill was reasonable too!

Great Find!

I like that they are right on 202 in Bernardsville. Very easy to find. I was looking for someone to declaw my cat.(I have health issues and cant have a cat scratching me) I found D. Baxter online and that he does declaw with a laser. (Seems not many vets around who do this) I was feeling pretty guilty until I talked with him. He said that with a laser, its a much easier procedure. He was right. Day after surgery, my cat was walking around the house like before. Wow! I am so relieved by how smooth it all went. If you are looking for a better way to declaw your cat, this is the place.

Dr. Baxter and Dr. Gjivoje are outstanding Veterinarians. As an animal enthusiast, I like to keep myself up to date on current services and equipment in the animal/veterinary field. I would like to point out that all of the equipment at the Bernardsville Animal Hospital is top of the line equipment. I am 100% confident that when bringing my pets here they are receiving the absolute best treatment possible. My pets are like my children, and I would never sacrifice the health of my child (or pet rather) to another Doctor just because they are "less expensive". The Doctors and Staff are extremely knowledgeable in what they do.
I would highly recommend this hospital.

Would NOT use this vet. Very expensive...will charge you $115 for a visit, then if your dog needs shots you pay for the shot PLUS a "shot administration" fee. I've never been to a vet who racks up the charges as much as this one, and we have moved a lot so i have had to go to seven different vets in the past three years. On top of being extremely expensive, I was not impressed with Dr. Baxter. He did not diagnose correctly and we had to see another vet to get treatment for a very sick pet.

In August 2011, my 3 year old cat stopped urinating, and seemed to be in some pain and discomfort. I called Bern'ville Animal Hosp and it was 4 pm. They said to immediately come in. By 5 we were there and they said cat was blocked, and they would have to do surgery to unblock him. We left him there and they did the surgery and additional tests such as blood, etc, and then we were able to take hom home 2 days later. Then I had to keep a close eye on him to see if urination was stabilizing back to normal. It didn't and I brought him back and he was put under anesthesia and cleaned out again.

My cat survived this ordeal and is healthy today. They saved my cat's life. I know the prognosis wasn't very good. I will also say they called me every day for 2 weeks to ask me how he was doing.
I owe these doctors a lot of gratitude. I feel they are very good doctors, an are I believe a husband and wife team The woman performed the first surgery and the husband the 2nd.

I do agree that they are very expensive as total bill for this was $3000. But at least I don't have a dead cat. Staff is also very nice.

As someone who has worked in veterinary medicine for some time, some of these negative reviews bother me since it's not the first time I've heard these complaints and the animal hospital should not be considered at fault for them. FYI--unless an animal hospital is labeled/marketed as an emergency facility, you cannot expect the doctors to be there all day, every day. This is especially true when you show up without an appointment or even calling while you're on the way.

General practices such as this one run on very specific, appointment-based schedules. Some even have a regular day each week when no doctors are in, or maybe they are there for a half day, or maybe it's just staff answering phones, etc. And while the doctors will always treat an emergency situation to the best of their ability as it arises, expecting them to always be available for emergencies is unreasonable.

This is why there are emergency animal hospitals. Your best bet is to keep the contact info. of the nearest emergency hospital on your fridge, and if you think your pet is experiencing a true emergency, go directly there. And it never hurts to call while you're on the way.

I find both Dr. Gjivoie & Dr. Baxter completely passionate and caring about the animals they treat. I have three cats and they are treated by both doctors.

My 5 year old siamese cat, Tosca, was very sick and both my husband and I were worried. This all happened right before Thanksgiving Day weekend. I called the hospital on Wednesday and the doctors had already left for the day. I was then told by the nurse that Dr. Gjivoie would come in to see Tosca. Dr. Gijvoie cared for her not only over Thanksgiving Day weekend but also on Thanksgiving Day. The staff was very helpful and I knew, as always, that Tosca was in great hands. Tosca has pneumonia and will need special attention. Both Dr. Baxter and Dr. Gjivoie are doing everything possible to get her back to great health. They are both very knowledgable and take the time to explain everything to my husband and I concerning her illness and treatment.

I am very grateful to the both of them and the staff at Bernardsville Animal Hospital.

I experienced the same problem in that I took my dog there for an emergency... he was breathing very heavy and slow breaths.

I was informed that no doctors were in at that time. The office staff, while helpful and very nice, said that only licensed doctors are legally allowed to examine animals and that I could wait for a doctor to return.

Of course this is my beloved pet so I rushed him to the Bridgewater Vet. Thankfully my dog is fine but it was scary to waste 30 minutes of my time driving to and from the Bernardsville Animal Hospital only to find out that a doctor isn't there 100% of the time during business hours.

I spread ice melter on my walkway, only to come back 5 minutes later to see my dog licking it up. I rushed him to this vet but was told that no doctors were in (this happened around 2 pm during the week) and they referred me to a vet by the Somerville circle.

I called Bernardsville back to complain and was told that doctors are only there when they have scheduled appointments. Are you kidding me! So if you have an emergency, don't even waste your time coming here!

I agree with Jennifer's review. I used to take my dog to Bernardsville Animal Hospital but stopped because I noticed that they've significantly raised thier prices. I checked around as well and, yes, they are much more expensive than others.

I took my dog (and later my cat) to the Bernardsville Animal Hospital for regular checkups. In addition, my dog got bloodwork done and my cat was declawed. My initial impression was that the bill was on the expensive side, but I gave it no second thought because these are my beloved pets. I told a friend about my experience, and she said that this vet has a bad reputation for being very expensive and over charges for its services. I called some 5 other vets in the area and asked what they would charge. And yes, Bernardsville was by far the most expensive out of all of them!

I don't think the doctors were all that great anyway, and they were somewhat rude. I suggest using another vet.

Being a new pet owner I was upset we when realized our dog was ill, and it seemed pretty serious. We had heard about the place in B'ville, and didn't want to just walk in anywhere that hadn't been recommended to us by someone we trust. Our dog is our child, so this was a big deal. We were SO impressed by the care that we, and our puppy recieved. The staff was incredible, most notably, Shannon. Her expertise, compassion for us, and loving attention for our puppy made us feel like our little guy was in the most loving hands we could have hoped for. We tell everyone we know with pets to go there, and we'll be loyal customers for years to come.
