It's hard to find anyone who lives in Hawaii who hasn't traveled to Las Vegas and stayed at the California Hotel. It's not unusual to see more people you know when you are there than when you are at home. The Boyd Group has done a good job of marketing Hawaii residents,and you can get good deals for a room and meals. Rooms are good sized, clean, and modestly furnished.
I have stayed here several times. The rooms have been good sized, clean, and comfortable; but no luxuries here. I've always received a coupon book at check in, and the food has been good. Staff has always been helpful and friendly. They know a lot of their business comes from Hawaii, and they treat Hawaii residents well.
OUR FIRST EXPERIENCE W/ THIS CASINO WAS BRIEF BUT UNPLEASANT. WE WERE PLANNING ON GAMBLING & HAVING A DRINK HERE BUT WE HAD PARKED ON THE STREET & WE FIRST NEEDED CHANGE FOR THE PARKINGMETER. MY HUSBAND STOOD BY THE CAR WHILE I RAN IN TO GET CHANGE FOR A DOLLAR AT THE BAR WHICH IS RIGHT INSIDE THE DOOR. THE BARTENDER WAS NOT BUSY AT ALL..HE WAS JUST STANDING THERE. I ASK HIM IF I COULD GET 4 QUARTERS FOR A DOLLAR & I POINTED TO OUR CAR & MY HUSBAND STANDING RIGHT OUT THE DOOR..HE RUDELY SAID NO!! HE TOLD ME I COULD FIND A CHANGE PERSON OR GO TO THE CASHIER'S CAGE. I COULD NOT BELIEVE THIS. WHILE I WAS TRYING TO FIND A CASHIER THE PARKING METER MAN CAME AROUND & WAS GOING TO GIVE US A TICKET..LUCKLY I WAS WALKING OUT W/ THE QUARTERS & WE DID NOT GET THE TICKET. WE DID NOT GO BACK IN THAT NIGHT AS WE WERE SO MAD AT THAT BARTENDER, BUT WE DID GO BACK ABOUT A
MONTH LATER & WE HAD THE SAME UNPLEASANT EXPERIENCES. WE COULD NOT GET CHANGE ON THE CASINO FLOORS. THE BARTENDERS WERE RUDE. SOME OF THE CUSTOMERS WERE ON THE "SHADY" SIDE.

I would not recommend this casino to anyone who plays at the poker or slot machines. The service is terrible! The chances of a falling star landing in your lap is greater than the chance of getting change from a change person. They will never come over to you and they also ignore you when you go up to them. I find it quite inconvinient when you are gambling and you constantly have to get up to get change. Out of ten times that I have there, not once has somebody came up to me when the service or change light was on. They do, however, come running when a jackpot has been hit.
As much as I hate going to downtown casino area, I still do often go eat at California Hotel. They offer great Hawaiian dishes. Most local like to go there because of the foods and the games. The foods are delicious and very affordable. I highly recommended anyone who like to try Hawaiian foods to check out California Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas.
