You are all completely right I know this guy for over 30 years 1st from New York where everyone hates him because of his slimey tactics. Just ask Bob from House of Oldies! The I moved to Pa. where he opened a store same ole you know what. He haunts me even from Vegas. But one fact is true he does have the stuff his inventory is incredible but so are his prices! My advice stay away try house of Oldies on Carmine St. in NY he will do mail order.

Unfortunately all of these bad reviews about the dickhead owner are true. Being a collector of vinyl, i had to check out this place for myself. I actually visited this place 3 times because there was alot of albums i couldn't find anywhere else. I spent $400.00 in 3 weeks at Waxx Trax but after my last visit, i will never go back. Like many of my other business relationships, i figured this jerk would warm up to me seeing that i was coming back a few times. No such luck. Everything is overpriced.....way overpriced. The owner is cocky and extremely shrewd. Don't waste your time. Zia records and Record City are much better. Joey from Record City on Charleston and Lamb will work with you and help you get what you need at a more than fair price. STAY AWAY FROM WAXX TRAX!!

Wax Trax Records Inc. The store itself is a goldmine, but the owner, is a totally different story. I decided to go check out the store for the first time, despite the reviews, i thought i'd give it a shot. When i first pulled up to the shop, he came outside and greeted me, he seemed nice at first, asking what i collected or what i was looking for. He had everything I wanted, and led me to the room with all the vinyls stored vertically. I was amazed with the bob dylan collection he had. Little did i know that i had to bring up all the LP's to get a price on them. I brought down two Blonde on Blonde records, and a Bringing it All back home record, the bringing it all back home record had a sticker price of $4.95 on it, so i assumed that that would be the price. when i got up to the counter, the jerk wanted to charge me $75 for one of the blonde on blonde records, and also quizzed me on the differences of the editions. He was just trying to fool me so he could grab more money from me. The second copy of blonde on blonde, he decided $40 which isn't a bad price, but the condition of the vinyls were not so great. So i asked him about the bringing it all back home record, and he said, "NO, NOTHING IN THIS STORE IS PRICED". so if nothing in the store is priced, then why is there a sticker noting the price. so i said okay, i'll pass. When i came back from looking at more vinyls, he said to me, "i will give you the deal of a lifetime....30 bucks", i was quite amazed that he'd drop the price that low, but still, it doesn't reflect the condition of the LP. So i just grabbed my girlfriend and ran out of there. Also, their dog, is it supposed to be a watch dog? that's a baby dog. STAY AWAY.....
BTW, i found an excellent condition of blonde on blonde that same day from ebay for 20 dollars. STAY AWAY.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!! Very overpriced. I was quoted a price of $400 for an audiophile pressing of Supertramp's Even in the Quietest Moments. I tried not to laugh in his face. 1 week later I bought the same Lp, same condition in EBay for $45. Employee, what ever his name was, was a complete @$$hole. He thought I was doing him a favor by shopping there. Go to Record City in Vegas, life's too short.

So there I was in sunny Lost Wages a couple of weeks ago and happened to see the Yellow Pages ad for WaxTrax records. I called for directions and a guy asks me: "So, what do you COLLECT?? Hmmm, I said "you know, rock, Jazz, Classical", music.
So I get to the Store which appears to be a converted house and am asked again" So, what do you COLLECT? We have COLLECTORS records". There is the Owner, an Employee and a Kibbitzer just hanging around. So, up a flight of stairs to the right is the Jazz and I'm looking around at thousands of LP's filed vertically and after looking at a few I realize that they are not priced. Back downstair I mention this fact to the Employee who says, " Oh, what you do is pick out everything you want and bring it downstairs and Steve(the Owner) gives you a great prices on it".
OK, so I'm downstairs looking in the section with the "Expensive Stuff" when Steve says to me " I Don't need your money". Hmmm. Then the Kibbitzer says "where you from?" "Boston"
"oh I used to go to the Combat Zone(the adult section of town, now gone) and get some fine pussy" then follows up that comment with a series of racist joke about the President-elect involving minorities in public housing, etc.
By this point I am becoming seriously steamed.
Steve suggests that I look in the Prog section up the left stairs while helpfully pointing out that these are COLLECTOR RECORDS SO THEY COST MORE" so I figure I'll go pick out a couple of LP's just to see how his " great pricing" system works. I pick out Fripp/Eno No Pussyfooting and This is Boston, Not LA punk comp(strangely found in the Prog section) and bring them down to the counter. Steve takes a long look at the Eno record and says " Well, this is $50" I say "Well I guess I came to the wrong place" and hightail it out of there.
It was the most offensive retail establishment I have ever set foot in.
My theory is that he must have a steady stream of suckers to stay in business. I would highly recommend that you not frequent this place.
And remember "He doesn't need your money.

Wow, this guy was as bad as advertised, if not worse. Gave me the whole "Not sure I want to be open, was thinking about closing up shop" line, and then quizzed me about my collection, rarities, even asked me what kind of work I do. Knowing where this was going, I played him like a violin... told him I have a huge collection of Beatles, Pink Floyd and Hendrix that was left to me but I only like 80's-current artists like Porcupine Tree, Tori Amos, Marillion, etc. Being a dealer myself, I threw him a couple of rare Beatles and Floyd items and really played dumb, he was kind enough to break it to me that these were really common items but he'd be willing to give me $5-10 each if they were in really nice condition. Ok, knowing he'll give me $10 for a $2,000 item if it's in good condition, we move on to what he'll charge me for a common item. Marillion "Market Square Heroes" picture disc - goes for $40-50 in mint condition on GEMM, less on eBay - he wants $300. I asked about a few others, he leads me around, pulls out the items and quotes ridiculous prices, I told him I'd take each so he's got a stack of about 7 items now, all overpriced by 400 percent at least. At that point I guess I'd built enough rep with him that he let me look at a few things on my own, so I proceeded to grab one item from each stack I could get to over the next few minutes, making sure I had something from the middle of each and no two items from the same stack. I went up front and handed him this stack of about 85 albums, and said "Dick, I've changed my mind. I'll give you $250 for the lot or you can go put these all away yourself." Well, I thought he was going to have a stroke! I darn near pissed myself I was laughing so hard, told him this was for all the legitimate collectors he had fleeced and that word was out about him, then skedaddled the heck out of there and went to Record City's shops just a few blocks due east and actually did drop about $350. Loved them, if you want to check out a real collectors shop go there and skip Wax Trax unless you just wanna wind up old Richard.

All of these negative revues made me laugh. Maybe most of these people don't have a sense of humor. I have personally done business with this man only through the mail, and have found each and every purchase completely satisfied. My husband and I are planning to make a trip to Las Vegas just to meet Rich in person. This man loves what he does for a living and if you have any sense of humor you too would find him thoroughly delightful whether or not you purchase from this store. Enjoy the moment...don't be so serious!

As a long time music collector,I too had a horrible and terrible
experience at Wax Trax records while on my vacation in Las vegas in April.I looked up the place in the yellow pages and I decided to pay a visit and i was not too impressed. i was looking for the Temptations album"Solid Rock", and i looked in the bin and he didn't have it,so i saw a copy of the Jackson's album "Dancing Machine" album, and he had the crazy nerve to sell the album for $50.00.ridiculous and very outrageous price.I know one thing for sure,I WILL NEVER EVER return or even set foot in his store again because he asks way too much for his records. Yes i am still looking for the album, but I will look someplace else.

I recently moved to vegas and recently found this record shop. Being an fairly new record collector I thought I would stop by and take a peek at what he had.

Well, after reading all the other posts about this jerkoff, I have to totally agree. I have the feeling he doesn't really want to sell his items, rather, he wants you to come in and OOHH! and AWW! over his stuff, like it's a freaken museum. He'll then ask you what your looking for and leads you to the area where he has just that. After leading you there, he'll pull out albums so tightly packed he needs to lube them to get them out, he'll pull it out and have you hold it and feel it, if you ask "How Much" he'll take it and go to his computer where he'll pretend to look it up, or he'll tell you he can't find it anywere so he comes back with a price around the same as the cost of a townhouse.. Oh yea, he will then tell you "no one else has it and you might not afford it". he's very degrading and thinks he's the bomb.

So, after looking around, I caught on to his scheme, so I thought, 2 can play at this game, I then went back to 3 different rooms and pulled a load of albums and left them there, making him have to put them back.

I WILL NEVER return to his sctore, he gives record collectors a bad name and tarnishes the industry. Now, i have to be more cognicent when I go to record conventions or even another local place because I dont know if I am being taken for a ride, thanks to that individual....

Another reader mentioned Record City. I WILL FOREVER go to that palce. The guys are very knowlegable and they talk to you like your a human and not a wallet. I bought 200.00 plus worth of abums and every cent was well spent..

While at the Record City on Sahara, a guy bought a few albums and the employee told the guy not to leave the albums in the car if he decides to go other places, the heat was so bad outside that the albums will melt, he offered to hold them until the guy was done playing around. How about that for customer service.. While at the other location, I met and talked with a guy named Joey. he was awesome.. We talked about nothing for hours, he even stayed open longer so I and only I could shop...

STAY AWAY from Wax Trax.. Go to Record City.. remember, "Give to the Needy not the Greedy"

Hello all! I was actually laughing a bit reading through these reviews as I had a couple experiences with him about 15 years ago when I was about that age myself. It's now August of 2010 (i'm not sure when these other reivews were written?), but I still remember that place!

My experience with this dude wasn't in Vegas, it was in Stroudsburg, PA, where he had TONS of records crammed into the basement of a house, a shed, and a garage. Undoubtedly, he did have some really great items at the time (this was also before the huge internet eBay boom), and it was the first time I saw many of the items. He had imports, bootleg vinyl, 45s, colored vinyl, picture discs, etc.

My first experience with him wasn't horrible, I was a teenager there with my parents, but he still did that idiotic thing of "bring me the record so I can 'feel' it for a price." That price would be at random, and if you showed particular interest, expect it to be higher! He actually would say that he needed to feel it for a price?! Maybe he thought the barcodes on the records were idiot-brail? I think he actually gave me a fairly decent run the first time to hook me, at least compared to other record stores, and I actually brought him more business with my best friend a time or two after that. I remember trying to bargain him down on a colored vinyl 45 from something like $20 or $25 down to $15 or so and he snapped back that HE gives the prices, NOT me. By the way, that record STILL sells for less than $10 on average on ebay even though it's been out for 16 years! He also told us about his $2 shed outside with all records in it being $2, but he then argued with my friend who found a German copy of Queen II and wanted to charge him more. Also, and this was REALLY stupid, you could get a stock copy of whatever album out of his $2 shed and buy it for that much, or you could go inside into the basement of his house and pay a good $25 or $30 for the same damn thing, sometimes in worse condition! I'm assuming now that he is in Vegas he has a $200 shed instead of a $2 one. Ha! Oh yeah, and I think he tries to size everyone up and asks what bands your looking for, etc. to determine how much of a shyster he can be and exactly how much he can squeeze out of you.

On a good note though, and I haven't heard this from anyone, but I think it actully won one over on this guy. I ended up paying $15 for a 45 that has ended up being worth at least a few $100s due to it being a withdrawn sleeve. I wasn't positive at the time if that was the rare one, but I certainly wasn't going to give any hint to him of what I thought it might be. I think I may have recovered the difference between the other items I was ripped-off on by him AND maybe made out a few bucks...maybe. I don't know if the man is bi-polar or just needs to always be the Alpha-Male in a situation, but he is rediculous to deal with and will base prices and how much he thinks he can get you for. Also, he will make you feel like he is catering to you by letting you in when he wasn't sure if he would take customers or by giving you a discount on his rediculous prices when you buy a bunch of stuff.

Anyway, to sum it up, his name isn't "Richard" by accident. He's a "Dick" alright, and to the Nth degree at that! He should be avoided and will hopefully be put out of business by the other good record store owners and, as much as I hate to say it, eBay.

The most odnoxious person I have ever met in the hobby and I've been doing this since 1968.I used to visit his Stroudsburg ,Pa store where he would insult me and make me feel like an 8 year old who was visiting with his older brother. He would have his lps stacked so tightly that you couldn't pull an album out and when you would try he'd yell at you! Then he'd see you looking at something and sarcastically tell you that it was very expensive and imply it was "beyond your means". The doowop series I'm referring to I just bought at the Princeton Record Exchange .I got the whole series for under 50 bucks. lol.
After being insulted too many times I stopped forcing myself to go there.Don't get me wrong under different ownership it would have been a great store.I used to see him at record shows but you had to get there early because he was gone before most people got there.Just an obnoxious transplanted New Yorker, the kind of guy who gives all New Yorkers a bad name. You can have him Vegas,he's your problem now. Jack.

This guy gets off on having what you want and dangling it in front of you for an outrageous price!
In lots of cases, he has no idea why certain items have the value they do, he just sees that someone, somewhere charges a lot for it, and greedily tries to squeeze as much out of you as possible.
None of his items are priced... You have to take EACH one to the counter and let him look it up while you wait.
I saw him buying stuff from someone while I was there, and he was trying to absolutely FLEECE them too!!
I had a couple thousand in my pockey ready to spend on CD's and I left without spending a DIME there.
I did, however go to record city and find NICE people who treated me with respect. They got a nice chumk of my money...

I too had a horrible experience at Wax Trax and have never been back... and I live right down the street. It's a shame with all great new/used record stores closing due to the times, this guy manages to stay in business. He quoted my girlfriend 60 bucks on a (bootleg) CD and the next week he quoted me 100 bucks for the same CD.

After reading all these reviews I had to publish a post on the music blog I write for, The Opening Acts (dot.com). You can read about my experience with Rich Rosen and Wax Trax here:

http://www.theopeningacts.com/2009/09/1593/

Feel free to comment on my post, as I would like to read your feedback.

GREAT STORE!!! I thought about not going because of the bad revues. I thought opinions are like a-holes everybody has one. When I walked in Rich asked me what (specifically) I was looking for, which I thought was a valid question. He proceded to help me find every thing on my wish list, and was very helpful. If you think he's expensive, well guess what, you get what you pay for, you don't get something for nothing especially records. I don't know if any of you know this but only about 15 percent of music recorded on vinyl is avaiable on
cd's. That's what makes rare lp's & 45's worth that much more. I think anybody that had a probl with Rich was probably not a serious collector which is who he likes to cater to. I would go to him again for sure. I guess it pays to check something
out yourself, not rely on word of mouth. "Rock On" John Van Dam

Tim,

Glad you had a good experience! Your lucky!

Maybe Rich had been smoking something the day you went in?
Or medication to help calm him down.

Maybe Rich will come out this way for a record convention. So him and I can visit again for old times sake..:>)

Took my third visit to Waxtrax today in 4 years. You all need to stop moaning and realize that this store is the best goldmine in the USA, I know the prices are high but if the items are too high priced dont buy them. Rich has some items you will never see elsewhere and he is just a very good businessman. Thats why he is still in business and lots of the small outlets close down because they sell stuff too cheap. I have walked away in the past from overpriced items here, but I have never been ripped off. I have never paid more than I have seen these items sold for on ebay. one thing is for sure, Rich will still be in business next year so he must be doing something right!

When we first arrived at Wax Trax Records in Las Vegas we were greeted by a guy named "Rich". He quickly tried to size up our buying potential by asking "So...what's the best record in your collection?" At this point we should have run like hell. But no...record passion surpassed common sense like it was standing still. Upon trying to look at a few albums, Rich hollers out "I hope you are ready to drop 4 or 5 grand, because that section is all collectors items!" About that time, another two customers walk in and he summarily runs them out with some remark about being closed. Once we decided this was not a "Green Zone" and we were in harms way, we quickly made our way to the exit. This is where it got REAL nasty. Rich takes a shot at both of us saying "I should have trusted my initial instinct and known you would waste my time!" That pretty much sums up a $60 cab fare from our hotel to his Hell-tel better known as Wax Trax Records Inc.

My wife and I went to Wax Trax. He wouldn't turn on adequate lights to inspect records. None of the records were priced, so you had to take your selections to him for pricing ! He was a nasty guy with a lot of trashy records ,but a few over priced gems there somewhere. Don't waste your time.

I went to vegas on my annual vacation and my friend and i went to WT. As soon as you walk in rich asks who you are, and what you're looking for? then says anyone who comes in has to talk to me first. He tells where your stuff is and directs you. I bought about 6 old punk records for my collection and he charged me 600 dollars. I had the money and bought then, he then says "fck! do you know how much i hate to loose my records? i dont know if you're some wealthy kid or just doing well at work" then shook my hand and asked me to keep in contact. After reading these reviews i see my assumption was right. Rich is a jerk who has a big collection, but over prices everything. He deffiently acts as the king dick. He proudly shows off his pictures of him and musicians he claims are friends. Id say avoid this guy because hes a jerk and he asks way too much for his records.

I'm 47 yrs. old and went for the first time to Las Vegas. Been a record collector since 1976. Walked in with my Wife and told The owner (Rich) I was looking for some Vocal Group 45's. So ok he showed me where it was and amazingly found some great stuff. All this time he was sizing me up with tons of questions like what's the best record in you collection and how long have you been collecting etc, etc. I ended up with a small but nice stack of records and was ready to pay some good cash for them. I know in my mind what book value would roughly be. Which was maybe $1500.00 or little more. So I was ready to pay and asked him how much? He said looks like about $6000.00 worth!! I said that's WAY to much!. I thought maybe I could knock way off that amount and only get a couple of records. He got on the phone right away and acted is if he was talking to someone. I tried to talk with him and he spoke up and said" I considered you gone 20 minutes ago". Wow what a jerk ass. And I feel sorry for my Wife who waited nicely while I blew the whole afternoon looking for some records. Now I don't think I'll ever go back to Las Vegas. What a BAD experience with Mr. New Yorkasshole. I've never ran into record dealer that acts like this. As for Mr. New York Stormy Weather acetate. You'll get yours someday!

I came into town because my father died unexpectedly. He literally lived for jazz,a and was a big band era musician back in Buffalo, NY. He has thousands of LPs of stuff in near mint condition, tons and tons of Verve, Blue Note releases and dozens and dozens of Mosaic box sets. On the phone the store owner (Rich) is all "don't put em in storage that is a crazy waste let me look at em- it's what I do!" And to recoup at least part my expenses ( I would never sell his entire collection ...no way) so I can at least pay bills when I get home, I come by with a sampling and let him look since he was so adamant.
Then he treated me like I had boxes full of garbage.
Garbage.
This stuff is my dad's pride and joy and I AM A RECORD SNOB MYSELF.
I collect krautrock and garage/psych and even repair goddam 8 tracks cuz I am an analog old school phreak.
He obviously was playin a game where he expects you to leave disgruntled, then drive around the block and say "ok man what will you give me?"

Screw him.
He is a bad man and I don't even want him touching my dad's recordings.

I got my laptop and looked up some of the titles on Ebay in comparable condition, just to make sure I was not imagining all this. They are a collector's dream.

And he is a bad nightmare.
And beneath my contempt.

Avoid this dick.

I have over 26,000 titles in my personal collection, but I had heard about this place, and decided to visit. When I arrived, it was not open. When the owner eventually pulled-up in his car and got out, I told him I wanted to shop, but he launched into a tirade over whether he wanted any customers that day or not. He did finally let me in. Once inside, he mirrored my every step, and seemed to be trying hard to size me up as far as my knowledge of music and my ability to pay. The over-arching theme here is that the owner seems to believe he runs a museum rather than a used vinyl store. His stock is way over-priced, you are strongly encouraged not to handle merchadise, and he seems to cast value judgments on your ability to pay through a series of never-ending questions about where you are from and what you are looking for, coupled with your knowledge about what your "want list" items are worth. Also, he sells bootleg recordings, a legal no-no. I finally exited without purchasing anything, walking over to the nearby quick mart for a soda to relive what was a horrible experience. This guy is a jerk. Too bad; I had budgeted $2,000 to spend that day on used vinyl. Idiot!

This store has some nice stuff ,but unfortunately I think the owner believes this place to be a Museum .he made some weird comments & would not leave me alone to look always trying to size me up.He asked if I was a dealer & I said "yeah sure" .What vinyl collector isn't . He preceded to tell me we would probably not be doing any business today .Any way I picked out some nice stuff knowing he was going to charge me up the ying yang .
He would not give me prices as I inquired along the way . Anyway I picked up about 30 items or so . In my head I figured out about 1500.00 worth wholesale but i would probably pay 2200.00 if pushed .I thought about 2600.00 low retail & 3500.00 high . He looked at it & gave me a price of 11000.00 . We proceded to trade jibes back & forth for 1 minute then I left.I will never return .

I've never been in this store, and after a negative experience over the phone, I never will.

I called up asking for a particular CD.

The owner said they didn't have it and hung up.

There wasn't even a pause between when I asked and the owner's response. In other words, HE DIDN'T EVEN CHECK FOR ME.

I tend to judge the places I shop or intend to shop by first impressions. I'll never call this place again, or even go inside.

I went to this store today & must say I was blown away.
The man had some great records & they are priced out of this world.
If there is an lp you are looking for he probably has it,but are you willing to pay his price?...uuh,probably not!

I will say the condiotion of the Lp's I looked at were good to mint.
but that being said He rolls prices off the top of his head probably based on mood, psychosis, the dogs mood-
& what kind of car your driving! who the hell knows,it wasn't anything rational.

He seemed really fond of the # 45 today about half of the records I asked about were $45.00!-prices went up from there,he seeemed just as fond of $75.00 & 150.00 needless to say or negotiating payed off somewhat,I entered the store & asked for the crazy mean s.o.b. owner I'd read about online,we laughed & proceeded from there but his best is knocking a 50.00 lp tp 40.00 or a 75.00 lp to 50.00.

the numbers seem almost like a poem he is just pulling them out of thin air when inspired!
they are all over priced but if you want a record bad enough,it may be here in good shape I found two Black Sabbath boots that go for up to
80.00 on ebay I got them both for 50.00 each.

not a great deal but older vinyl boots from the 70's I felt I was glad to see them in good shape & in person, but I know what people mean common lps 25.00 we got a few for 15.00 but would have bought so much more if they were priced remotely affordable-

The man may have a goldmine w/prices higher than gold!

Many of your guys' complaints are what I love about record stores like this one. Keep bitchen till they're all gone. Crotchety old store owners! Oh No!
I was in Vegas, so I called the store to get directions from the hotel, and he says.. "I dont know if I want any more customers today... what are you lookin' for?" I gave him a couple of titles and he says "Alright, you can come." That kicked ass! Then he quizes me as I'm looking at his records. Once I passed, he let me into the back room. Lotsa cherry ass shit back there. Its Vegas, so he's gonna see what your wallet will bear- like every one else in that town. Not just a store, an experience. Wizard. Knows his shit. Probably been selling records since before you were born.

Visited that store recently.. The owner was rude and insulting as soon as we stepped foot in the door. We ended up walking out after only a few minutes of his horrible demeanor. That guy has some serious issues/screws loose. It's amazing that he's even in business (supposedly) severing the public????? Would never go back even if he had every LP I was looking for.. Would give him a penny for anything after the way he acted.

Would give him a penny for anything after the way he acted.

.

I visited this store all the way from L.A. hoping to find a couple of records to listen to. The owner was nice enough to let me browse through his beat up records even though he was closed. The guy was kind of rude, smirking, and insulting my intelligence of music I actually listen to. There were no prices on any of the records, and most were not even in good condition. I chose 2 records that at most would go for $50-75 each. The guy wanted $150 each!!! I wouldn't waste my time or even bother supporting a store whose owner is rude and overpriced. In addition to that he wanted $25 + for a common Clash Lp. Ridiculous!

Wax Trax is the worst used record store that I have ever went to.

the "store" is a redesigned house that is completely crammed full of junk.

many records are in poor condition, they also violate the law by offering bootleg records, CDs, etcetera.

the people running that store are unbelivable to me, I tried rummaging through the place looking for some old records when they first opened for business. upon finding something I was interested in I noticed there was no price tag.

so I asked "how much does this cost?"

"oh that's super rare, it will be $15.00" was the reply.

I then decided not to purchase that album ... but I returned to the store three weeks later only to discover they still had not put price tags on their merchandise!

that place is a terrible scam.

PROS:
CONS: beware of cramped quarters, disorganized sections, and no price tags!
