Everyone was so pleasant and all the animals seemed well cared for. After speaking with one of the caretakers, it is my understanding that they will accept animals into the sanctuary that are in need. Our community should help to support the Gilcrease Bird Sanctuary!

Gilcrease isn't intended as a "destination" in Vegas. They do real rescue, giving unloved and unwanted birds a REAL place to call home. Feed, care, and love. We always take the injured pigeons we find to them and they happily accept them and give them a forever home with them.

I'm not quite sure what I expected to see when I decided to visit this sanctuary, but it wasn't this. The sanctuary is located on the far northwest side of the city and wasn't very easy to find, even with the help of Onstar. It was a depressing place with birds that were caged. The birds didn't seem exotic to me and there were pigeons and ducks and swans -- birds that were pretty common. And I saw a pig there, too. There was a nominal fee to roam the grounds.
PROS: It keeps the birds off the street.
CONS: Off the beaten track. Not much that is interesting.

I heard about it from a nieghbor who took her kids there. It was spring time and she said some baby animals were being born. I took my daughter there and we saw a very wide variety of animals (including the babies my nieghbors had mentioned) and not just birds. Along with the toucans, parrots, ducks, geese, emus, ostriches, peacocks, many macaws and lots of other birds they also house mini horses, lamas, bulls, pigs, donkeys, goats, lizards, rabbits and more. A lot of the birds (parots and macaws) talk and do tricks which is very fun for kids. Its very inexpensive: $4.00 for adults and $1.00 for kids. You can also feed the ducks for $1.00. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to go through the whole place. I'd say a very well 5 dollars spent for an outing with my 3 yr old. Pros: well money spent. Cons: parts of the place smells like a farm but what do you expect when your around pigs and goats:o)
