This bar has gone back to what it used to be, a "Karaoke Bar". Some where it lost its way over the years and became a ghetto bar with lots of gang bangers and the women who love them in attendence. Of course this brought in all the trouble. But this has changed, they now play Karaoke music until the early hours, have a new dress code, and no longer allow the bangers in. Of course you will never confuse this place with the Edge but it is a fun place to dance, sing, and watch others do it. Easy place to score nookie if thats your reason for going there, as the women who attend aren't deep thinkers, 1-2 drinks and your on your way.

I went there while visiting last year. I had a great time. Went on a couple of weekdays so it always started up slow at first but by around 11:30pm people start to fill in and it picks up. The crowd seemed to be mostly locals which I liked and the bartender was great. That girl can sing. I've heard that it's less fun on the weekends because of the crowds so if you want to just chill and have a good time go there on a weekday.

Seriously........

Reno of 2008 isn?t Reno of 2000; it?s a whole new crowd. I?m the Head of security and ill tell you if you think the bar is bad, you should have seen in 5 months ago. I?ve taken a great deal of personal abuse and violence to clean the crowd up. Its getting a lot better , but until the Rep we earned from being a "Oakland style bar" from the folks in Oakland goes away , we are going to have a lot of "gangster and Gangster wanna-be's " hanging out . We DO have a dress Code and enforce it. It would help us (the bar) if the RPD would sweep the sidewalks when we toss out the trouble makers. We have thrown out dirt bags trying to come in to sell dope and the RPD refuses to disperse them from in front of our club. So all the angry dirt bags that get refused entrance mad mug, talk endless trash `and threaten everyone coming in. It makes our job very hard while we try to clean up inside, we get almost no help on the outside.
So people walking by see nothing but a bunch of angry thugged out d-bags leaning on the building, smoking dope and drinking. (We can?t kick em off the public access) so we get bypassed by the folks we are trying to attract. It?s very hard right now.
RPD is doing a much better job lately; we have seen a lot more presence, so kudos to them.
My name is Chris, if there is a problem.see me im on friday-saturday night at the door

I'm orignally from L.A., CA. (born and raised). I use to club @ The Fabulous Florentine Gardens, Baby Does, Pepper's, Red Onion's, Wing's, Paladium and more in the late 80's and early 90s. I sure miss Hollywood!! This place (West 2nd Street whatever) was the MOST VIOLENT, WORSE nighmare I have ever experienced. I am prior Military (U.S. Air Force) from 1981-1985. I am an anglo saxon white male - age 45 and visited this place last night (5/2/08) - Friday night. I arrived @ approximately 3:15 a.m. to my amazement I could NOT believe all the "wanna-be" gangsta's and the plethora of ARROGANT Security kids trying to be something they definitely were NOT! Trying to pick up on drunk bar fly's left and right, dancing with them, smoking (SMOKE WAS UNBEARABLE) not to mention the lack of class and style in this dump!!! Good news is I did not have to pay a cover charge (could see why) when I arrived. Within the first 15 min's of being in that small, crowded DUMP with BAD MUSIC I almost got into a fight! There were about 4-5 fight's in a mere 1 hour of misery while I was there. I did NOT drink anything. I thought maybe something would jump out of the glass and grab me! LIke a "rocky horror picture show!!" Where is MANAGEMENT here? Where are the Owner's? Police were there when I left outside. Many hispanic and African American kids who look like there were right out of MTV. I love black people, asian women and latina's big time! I"m from L.A. remember? 42 years of it! I live in So. Orange County (Irvine, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach) area's and seen some pretty nice, high class places W/O ALL THE UNHEALTHY CIGERETTE SMOKE, VIOLENT, NO DRESS CODE clubs in 15 different states and 3 countries - but NEVER anything like this!! I was very disappointed, disrespcted and felt as though being in San Quentin State Prison working as a volunteer counselor as well as in L.A. County Jail, Youth Authorities were MUST less violent!! I would NEVER go back!

I grew up in Reno and at one point, this was the place to be on a weekend. My friends and I used to go there all the time in my early 20s and it was a fun place to be, great karaoke, comfortable atmosphere. It was like that until about 8 years ago and then something went horribly wrong.
Every once in a while, we try to give it another chance and it's the same thing everytime.
First off, it's WAY too crowded. I'm sure there's a fire code violation in there somewhere. Second of all, they advertise karaoke but it's one song and then ten really loud, horrible rap/hip hop songs for dancing. This is no longer the great karaoke bar it once was. The staff used to be awesome, the kind of bartenders you raved about to your friends and you felt comfortable being around. They didn't have bouncers back then. Since they got them, I've rarely seen one that is friendly or good to be around. You get the immediate vibe now when you first walk in that this is just a really negative place to be. The "karaoke" dj, is anything but. I get the impression from him (and I remember when he first took over) that he's disgusted with karaoke in general. I think he'd rather be a full time DJ but no real club would likely hire him since he can't mix for anything.
It just isn't anything great now and now that it isn't the only game in town anymore, I avoid it like the plague when we go out. The atmosphere is negative (patrons and employees), it's too hot, stuffy and cramped. Honestly, sardines have more room to move but I guess if you're not there for karaoke, you like bad music and you enjoy being armpit to armpit with a bunch of idiots, then by all means, check it out.
If you're looking for an enjoyable Karaoke atmosphere, Spyro's in Sparks is a lot nicer and they actually focus on Karaoke. If you're looking to dance, check out Vino's across the street. The employees (even the bouncers) are friendlier and it's bigger so not as overly cramped.

I'm one of the security personal from the club. I have read some of these reviews. I must say some of your points are valid. But what you don't know is if you come to have a good time you will. If you are a drunken a hole you will be treated like one. The problems we really have are from out of towners who think this is Oakland. You try being security in a club and having people take swings at you all night. And by the way, what club have you been to that the security is all lovey dovey. You have to do a lot of stuff to get 86'ed from this place. So you must be an idiot. I suggest when you go to any club you mind your own business and you will be fine.

just heard from a reliable source at this piece o' *** bar that the head of security has been suspended for, are you ready....holding down a girl at the bar so that a waitress could beat on her for starting trouble with her.
I had always heard that this guy was a loser but come on!!! What kind of a real man does this kind of thing...and what kind of a lunatic would go along with this ????

This bar has gradually spun out of control. It has an evil vibe when you first walk in the door but then to have this kind of stuff going on in some back room. ..This place needs to be shut down. Soon.

I the guy from Kazakhstan. I in 2003 was in the city of Reno.
I lived in motel Olympia on against a bar in the second street.
In one evening I have casually got to a bar, have paid attention to qualitative singing which rushed along the street.
I have been shaken by atmosphere in a bar, it reminded me a family party. I the foreigner felt, as at home.
Affable service, the security guard carried out honesty duties not starting up already decently drunk and few the summer.
Till now I remember this Bar. And those who is not happy with a bar in 2 street,
I invite to us to Kazakhstan and will compare that the super. All is learnt in comparison. I wish to send regards to the personnel of a bar and please send regards from Kazakhstan to the owner of motel Olympia.
Pavel Polistovskiy The person from Kazakhstan!

THIS PLACE WAS WAAAYY TOO HOT AND NEGATIVE! THERE WERE A HANDFUL OF CLASSY PEOPLE, BUT THE MAJORITY HAD NO CLASS, INCLUDING THE DJ. BOY THAT DJ WAS FULL OF HIMSELF AND THE SECURITY GUY AT THE DOOR WAS JUST UNPLEASANT. CRAPPY SERVICE ALL AROUND. THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER KARAOKE SHOWS IN THIS TOWN THAT HAVE GREAT SINGERS AND ENERGETIC, FUN DJ'S, I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO SOMEONE I DON'T LIKE. THEY KEEP IT SO HOT YOU ARE JUST MISERABLE AND THE BEER ON TAP IS OVER PRICED. THE DJ REALLY JUST SEEMED INTERESTED IN HIMSELF AND HIS THREE FRIENDS. NO SMILES AND FUN TIMES IN THIS ATMOSPHERE. IF YOU DO MAKE THE POOR CHOICE OF VISITING THIS BAR BE SURE TO BRING YOUR OWN PERSONAL AIR CONDITIONER OR SOMETHING AND WATCH YOUR BACK, THE PLACE SEEMED FILLED WITH DRAMA, MOSTLY OF THE EMPLOYEES.

Okay, I read the other reviews on this bar and the two most recent were rave reviews, so a couple of friends and I went to check it out......the two people with the great reviews must be friends of the employees or something, the place is very negative and it seems that you see the same singers twice before you get called up. The bartenders were just rushed and non personable and the security staff were just aloof. Some of the customers were pretty cool, but the dance breaks are way too much. Arrogant seems the best word for the DJ and most of the bouncers. Drink prices seemed average and the drinks good, wouldn't recommend anyone to check it out though. All I can say is we gave it a fair chance and were disappointed. I have been to much more fun and energetic karaoke shows.

WoW!!! Somewhere different to hang out that is fun as hell! I love this place. I am quite new to town, and I kinda ran across this place. I was a little skeptical at first but I had a blast! Everyone was so nice there, the drinks good and strong, and the people who work there were really friendly. I read a few of the reviews and the ones that were bad, I never saw any of what they said. I like the fact that they have a dress code, and from what one of the patrons that was there said, they are a lot more picky about who they let inside. I was also impressed with the fact, they do not allow bad drunken behaivor. If you even attemp to start anything you are out. I felt real safe and been back atleast six or seven times. Each time the same thing. Great service, friendly staff and a great place to hang out. If you are a cool person looking to sing ya got to go. I noticed there is more dancing on the weekend and for someone like me thats ok as i do not sing. Weekdays are relaxed, and weekends get crowded, but all in all it is a great place to hang out. So all I have to say to those who have such negitive things to say about this bar is what did ya do to get 86'd? cause i have never seen them 86 anyone just having a good time.

I work in customer service at a downtown Reno casino, and whenever guests ask me where they can go to have fun away from the casinos, I always recommend W 2nd St Bar, whether they want to sing karaoke or just a fun place to hang out.
After a stressful shift at work, there's nothing I like better than to go to W 2nd to have a drink, sing some karaoke and just unwind. I've been a regular customer for years, and I always have a great time. The bartenders are the best, they make the best drinks in Reno for reasonable prices. The KJs make everyone feel welcome, whether you're an experienced singer or a karaoke virgin. They have a very large selection of karaoke songs, almost anything you'd want to sing. And their sound system is the best around! If you're looking for the best karaoke experience, I'd recommend going on a weeknight for less crowds and plenty of chances to get up and show off your vocal skills. On the weekends there's more people and while there's still karaoke, it's more of a dance club.
The security staff makes me feel very safe, which is especially important for a woman in a bar.
I've been to other karaoke shows in town, but I always come back to W 2nd St. Even when I went to Las Vegas, the karaoke bars there left me feeling homesick for Reno and W 2nd St Bar!
As Toby Keith says - I LOVE THIS BAR!

Upon seeing some of the ratings for this establishment, i was mortified to see more negitive ones than positive. I am also perplexed on how this bar gets a bad rap for things that i have seen happen over the years in every bar I have been to over the years. Unfortunatly some people get stupid when they drink and irritate those who dont. My point, dont blame the bar, blame the patrons in it who are to drunk to act like adults. Security wont have to "rough up" any one if they were not stupid. I have noticed that if something happens in front of West second, or outside West second after hours it autmaticall involves them. this is not true. being a long time patron I know the owners down to the security, and they have NEVER displayed any behaivor that has been listed in other reviews. They make u feel like family. If there is a problem all you need to do is bring it to their attention and "pow" it is taken care of. Their goal is not to lose business it is to get business. As with any business, decisions get made that we realize are wrong. It is the good business owner that realizes this and changes it. I am refering to the clientel. Yes at one time, any thug in reno was able to go there, but recently that has changed for the good. But remember, "one bad apple ruins the bunch" and unfortunatly many of us had had to be on the recieving end of this on more than one occasion. But it is the owners, management and staff that have kept me coming back. Their service, respect, customer service, and desire to do the best for the business is why i go. mind you I am a regular that frequents there atleast twice a week. i have seen my fair share of stupidity in there, and it has NEVER been at the hands of the management or staff it has been the patrons that ruin the experience. the bar is a great place. Everyone needs to give the bar a chance. Do nt let the stupid people ruin it. Trust me, you will see it as being a great place to be on a busy or slow day.

Pros: Atmosphere, cutomer service, new clientel

Cons: Parking on weekends

Used to frequent West 2nd Street Bar approx. 4 years ago, then moved out of town and then returned to Reno this year. I also decided to visit the bar my friends and I used to have fun at only to discover it has gone to hell. I mean what happened in 4 short years? All the employees are rude, unfriendly! Their security are just like these ego bully types with no personality or true caring about the safety of the customers, there seemed to always be something happening while I was there (negative) with security hitting and pushing both men and women...no respect was shown that I saw or the people with me. It is called Reno's only Karaoke bar, and I heard the DJ tell a lady in front of me in line to turn a song in that he was no longer taking songs because the people who wanted to dance requested dance music (he had already had plenty of what he called "dance breaks" throughout the night) and he wouldn't want to lose their business.....Thought it was a Karaoke Bar not a dance club! What about losing your karaoke business, afterall they are a Karaoke Bar, Right? DJ just was arrogant and unpleasant and if I had wanted to listen to hip hop crappy music for 45-50 minutes at a time I would have gone to a young dance club. I will be sure to let people I know that West 2nd Street karaoke Bar is NOT worth visiting, with its mean security , rude employees and thug like customers.

Pros: Couldn't find a One

Cons: Negative attitudes and atmosphere, more hip hop not Karaoke like advertised

This bar is by far the worst ever. I went a couple of weeks ago because my cousins talk it up. worst experience ever. bar is to crowed, bouncer beat up on random people and your in fear that if you look at someone in any way your going to get beaten up or jumped. When I was ther a fight broke outside and nothing was done at all. Worst place ever, do not recommed it at all. oh yeah did i mention that there was a shoting there last week. soyou either going to be shot at or beat up.

Pros: drinks

Cons: fear for your live

This is the worst bar I have ever been to. Way crowded, bad service, and dumb meathead bouncers that pick people at random and beat them up. If you want to have the worst time of your life then go here. If you like to get drunk and fight then you may like it. I hope the owners of the bar read this and realize your establishment is a embarassment to the public.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Service, music, staff, atmnosphere, bouncers

The first time I went to this bar about 2 1/2 yrs ago on a slow week night it was o.k. a regular karaoke dive bar. However it did'nt take long to realize the general concensus in Reno is to stay away, unless your looking for a fight or to get jumped or have someone rob you of something. Its very crowded inside on weekends and people constantly bump into you while you listen to lame hip hop and karaoke. I have witnessed multiple fights, nearly been in few myself. I have witnessed bouncers being bullies to many people including women and the cops are usually sorting out a mess or two on Fridays and Saturdays. Cheers and bring brass knuckles for your own protection.

Pros: serves alcohol.

Cons: tense atmosphere, rude bouncers

This bar was not fun at all. The atmosphere was too dark and people uptight. The drinks were expesive and the bartenders took forever to get our order and were not polite. I watched the bouncer allow five guys to jump someone who didn't like the selection of music and still allow the guys back into the bar after witnessing the fight. Overall the service and atmosphere did not allow for a low key and friendly place to share some laughs and sing some fun songs. I will never go back and will never reccomend this place to others.

The atmosphere in this bar was awesome!!!! I highly recommend this bar! Karakoe entertainment, and I mean these people can really sing- no ear busters. Amazing. Even though there's a ton of people there (usually) The barteneders always recognize you and try to get to you as soon as they can.

If you are looking for a place to go, whether you are from out of town, from the area, by yourself, or with a group of friends, then West Second Street Bar is the place to go! The friendly atmoshpere is inviting. No matter what your age, you will always find a group of people to chat it up with. The mixture of entertainment is GREAT! Karoake for thirty minutes, hip-hop and country music to dance to for thirty minutes. Everyone has a great time there! Prices are average ($3.00 for a beer) and there is no cover. The only set back is no parking. You would have to park in the nearest parking garage (I would suggest the ElDorado parking garage) and walk to W 2nd St Bar (walk through the casinos, of course). But it is all worth it.
