ran into this place by accident on a recent trip to NYC. was strolling around feeling a bit saddened by our recent visit to Ground Zero and boom, there it was, Anthony Bourdains old place. well to be honest i didnt realize there are two Les Halles and i would guess he worked at the other one. well this one was more hidden but super cozy. we stopped in for a few drinks around 4 and chatted it up with bartender who had just come back from SF. it was too early for dinner so we made a reservation and took the subway back uptown to get cleaned up.
well we were not disapointed at all. the service was great the food was awsome and i dont know if its because we are from SF and used to SF prices but this place was very cheap in our opinion.
i got the pork extravaganza (forgot the name) and it was outstanding.

I eat here often and have honestly NEVER been disappointed. The staff is exceptional and the food is kick-ass. The prices aren't too bad and the portions are really good.
Everyone should make this a stop

Pros: Great food, great service

Cons: Can get crowded

.

Classic French brasserie dishes throughout the menu - everything I tried was spot on and instantly took me back to meals I have had in France.

The food makes this a great date spot - however it can get quite loud at times.

Went here for a nice weeknight dinner. Basic French food, but done well. The escargot was all butter...so it tasted GREAT. The steak tartare was so-so but the mussels were solid. Wine was good, too. All in all, not a destination place, but great for a nice meal out when I don't feel like hopping the subway or a cab.

Les Halles offers good food and polite, efficient service. I always enjoy my time there. The mussels and fries, coupled with a bottle of white wine, are perfect to share. If you feel like something more hearty (it is a steakhouse, after all), go with one of the filets. The steak au poivre is my favorite, and very good for the cost. They have some fun cocktails, too - the Gini has made me like gin again! If you are having steak, enjoy a bottle of red before having an after dinner drink.

Pros: dark and romantic decor, lovely dishes, good wines served well

Cons: in a strange part of town

We went for lunch during the week. The wait staff was pleasant and courteous.
I had the steak tartare, but it was lacking. My wife's duck was much better. We had the prefixe lunch which included soup.
The dessert was the best part. My mother's flan was the best I had ever eaten.

I have been here several times, but only at around 9 pm - 10 pm during weekdays and weekends. During these times it was never packed, only like 7 tables filled during those times. The service is pretty terrible I must admit although they never messed up an order or spilled anything. But for someone like me, eating is all about food i could care less about service, if your waiter is MIA yell for a new one or ask the busboy for some service. What makes this place a great neighborhood joint are the prices and the food, far cheaper than any restaurant with a french flare in new york, and the food is GOOD, granted not awesome, although their mussels were extremely plump and delicious. Steaks are very reasonably prices and are served like any homestyle place, small salad, sauce (depends on the steak), and really good french fries. So to end it all, nothing superb, but whenever I'm hungry there are few places open till 12 in the financial district

i liked this restaurant because we weren't robbed by the time we left. it offers simple, quality food for a decent price in new york city. i had the pate de campagne, which was fabulous. the soup of the day was a sort of white fish vegetable combination. i thought it would be chowder-y, but it came as a puree. the taste of fish in the soup was great, so as you didn't really miss having chunks of fish itself. we had a reasonably priced bottle of wine, and were on our way three bread baskets later. zut alors!

The food here is good. The service is sub par. Yet, given to how downtown does not have many good choices for restaurant, i occasionally order from here regardless of the inadequacies. But this last time, was the last straw. I got take-out, salad onglet, and they somehow overlooked that the salad they were serving consisted of spolied lettuce. Spoiledlettuce that you would have thrown out one week ago. It was brown and had slimy browness all around it from the lettuce leaves that had crumpled away, since the decay of their structure. i had to call them and tell them to throw out their lettuce. Someone there should have figured it out before me. I will not be going back, nor will any of my colleagues. I suggest you find somewhere else, or if you can, open your own restaurant on Fulton. There are so few choices.

My friend & I dined at Les Halles for the firt time during Downtown Restaurant Week last Thursday. I was worried about all the bad reviews and tried to be impartial, hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Sorry to say, several factors left a lot to be desired. The wait for our table wasn't too bad, contrary to other's experiences, but the food was pretty yucky. The appetizer & dessert I chose from the prix fix menu were downright gross & I couldn't finish either. Maybe I've lost my flair for French food?? The steak entree probably would have been downright fabulous if the kitchen hadn't sent what should've been a medium/well-done steak out still mooing & bleeding. The place was packed & our server so busy that he didn't check on us once, otherwise I would've sent the steak back. . .I ate as much as I could. The atmosphere of Les Halles is quite lovely, however, envoking a warm French bistro with gorgeous light fixtures and high ceiling. Since I live nearby, I will probably give them another shot early on a weekend when they won't have the copious after-work crowd and I'll order off the a la carte menu. If my next (and possibly final) experience is any better, I'll report back. . .

I went to Les Halles expecting greatness.
Not only did that not happen, but also my friends and I were very disappointed.
We had lunch, I ordered the Onglet A L'echalote, Frites hanger steak, shallot sauce (the sauce was very good), but asked to substitute the side fries with grilled vegetables. The three of us asked for substituting the fries with vegetables/asparagus. The waitress, who took 10 minutes to come to our table, responded no problem.
The food came late, with the French fries for all of us.
We called the waitress again and she was not surprise to see their mistake, and than after another 10 minutes she brought the vegetable.
They charged each of us extra $4 for that! (In the menu fries are $5 and grilled vegetables are $5.50, so thats strange). After we told her that they didnt mention that it would be extra, she just did not say anything but thats our policy.
We also ordered a side of Macaroni and Cheese penne pasta & gruyere with or without prosciutto, we asked for "with prosciutto". It came 12 minutes after the rest of the food (maybe they thought it was our dessert?), of course, without prosciutto.
Guys, I dont like to complain, but how many times can you mess it up?

I took two colleagues to this restaurant for lunch today and experienced the most atrocious, incompetent service ever. The restaurant was not busy at all, yet the server could not get our order straight and brought all three of us the wrong order. (She didn't even apologize for it) Then she overcharged us and didn't even think to take it off the bill. The wait staff is just plain clueless. The food was average and definitely not worth the grief and frustration of putting up with the service.

I went to Les Halles Downtown for lunch with two friends. The service was incompetent. We were all given the wrong food. This was later acknowledged by the waiter but neither remedied nor apologized for. Each of the three of us was overcharged on our bill, each in a different, quite creative way! We started to point out the overcharges to the clueless waiter, but gave up and thought it best to cut our losses, so we just paid and left, and then had a good laugh.

It is a restaurant neither I nor my two friends will ever, ever return to.

A couple of weeks ago my parents were in town and after a long day of shopping and jet lag we decided to stay in the neighborhood to eat dinner. Immediately we thought of Les Halles. My Fiance and I have been there on numerous occassions and always enjoyed the great steaks. Even though we did not have a reservation for that night and the resturant was preparing for a huge company party, the hostess made sure that we had a table within 30 mins. The hostess even offered to pay for our first round of drinks due to the wait. The cracked pepper steak is to die for. However watch out for the dirty martinis, too much dirty.

I went to this restaurant for lunch with a few coworkers and we all loved it. First, the service was great. We had a very nice, friendly waitress who took the time to suggest items. Next, I had a half order of the moules frites in the billi bi sauce, which was delicious. The mussels were plump and juicy, and the sauce was perfect. I know someone else mentioned it didn't have a lot of flavor but saffron is really meant to be a subtle accent, not overpowering. Regardless, it was fantastic. We ended the meal off with creme brulee and the tarte tatin. The creme brulee was PERFECT, the tarte tatin, however, I would pass on. I would definitely suggest this place for at least lunch.

The food here is consistently pretty good. I love their moules et frites... all the sauces are parfait for dipping your fries in... They also have a good mac and cheese, frisee salad, and egg dishes (for brunch).

Unfortunately the service here is consistently bad. I frequently go here thinking the service might one day get better, but it has not. Even when the restaurant is not busy durring the weekend, or day times, the waiters are slow. Last time I went, my friend and I were charged prix fixe prices even though we didn't get the fixed menu. They always correct their mistakes, but the keep making them time after time. I would not reccomend this place if you are a stickler for service. If you don't mind waiting a while for decent food, check it out.

it's not like there's much of a choice in this neighborhood... i work right around the corner and we often go for happy hour. it is always packed and the service is usually slow as a result. however, the steak frites is excellent and everything else is usually pretty great too. standouts include croque monsieur, chocolate mousse, and the cotes du rhone they have by the glass (fantastic).

So where to begin?? Waiting half an hour past our reservation time? Only 7 places set for 8 diners? Only getting 7 of our 8 drink orders? One diner having to ask for cutlery four times? Someone breaking a tray of dishes not once, not twice, but three times? It felt like we were in some episode of I Love Lucy! One of our group tried to lighten the mood by applauding the clumsy wait staff (Lets here it for them ladies and gentlemen!) He got accosted by a waiter who yelled in his face, We take pride in our jobs. They take pride in such terrible service?? I would hate to have such low self esteem. As for the food, well my steak was chewy. My frites were limp and not fabulous. The champagne was good, but that can hardly be credited to this sad excuse for a restaurant.

I've eaten in both Manhattan versions of this restaurant in the past & have enjoyed everything on every occasion...but my luck ran out. I can safely say I had the worst dining experience of the last 7 years in Les Halles Downtown last night. The waitress/waiter service was all but non existent. Only once during the entire course of our visit did we manage to get the attention of someone masquerading as a waitress (having been sitting unattended for over 30 mins) and then her attitude was appalling. The food was then rushed & unappealing & never once were we asked if we'd like a a second bottle of water let alone a second drink. It's a pity because these restaurants have so much to offer...but when you see this level of apathy and rudeness and then have the "pleasure" of having to pay, I'll take my chances somewhere else...

The food is basically the same and just as delicious as at the Park Ave. Les Halles. The escargots are a good choice and they gave my husband more sauce on his pork tenderloin than they have lately at the other location. The atmosphere here is a bit different but the quality is comparable.

As a fan of the Les Halles in the Flatiron district, I was expecting much of it's downtown sibling. In the best/worst tradition of Hollywood sequels, it failed to meet every expectation. It was appalling in every way; we were seated hap-hazzardly by a buss-boy who'd been promoted for the evening. The wine took 20 minutes to arrive, the appetizer a further 30. An hour into the evening we were informed that the main courses were unavailable and insult was added to injury when a steak ordered rare arrived well-done. Worst of all was management's arrogant and dismissive stance in the face of such ineptitude. As with movies, some of the greats should remain one-offs.

This was the worst experience ever in New York City!! We had to wait 30 minutes before the waiter even came to our table and had to ask 4 times just to get a glass of water. All of the tables in our row ended up sharing salt, pepper, and ketchup because the service was so terrible. We even skipped out on the dessert of our prix fix menu because we just wanted to get out of there!!! The staff was rude as well.

I agree with a lot of the previous reviews...I ate at Les Halles downtown Tuesday night b/c it was the only place open in that neighborhood...but the service was very very slow, the waiters were nice but not very informative, and the hanger steak was okay at best. The layout is nice and the mood is fun, but the food was not worth the hefty price tag. I do recommend the house red wine--excellent!

Thank heavens for Les Halles. The Financial District is pretty dead on evenings, especially weekends. The place is always open and serves excellent food late into the night. The atmosphere is that of a French neighborhood bistrot. The steak frites is genuinely like you'd get in Paris and the wine list allows you to choose what best goes with it. My favorite place to hang out on a Sunday evening.

I've heard how great the uptown one is, but there's seems to be nothing but negatives about the service in the downtown one. My three visits have included at least one (if not all three) of the following: forgetful/confused service, smart-assed service (and it's not cooler because your french), slow service, and uneven qualty in food. Yeah, the steak frites are good, but this is NYC, and at these prices, all components should be great. Seems that Bourdain's attempts at celebrity have made him forget what he's good at-- running a restaurant.

Pros: Paris atmosphere, Good Frites

Cons: Paris atmosphere, Zee snooty frenchmen

we went during downtown dinner week which may be why we experienced terrible customer service, but that is no excuse! we were seated 30 minutes after our reservation, an the hostess actually had the nerve to say we could leave if we didn't like the wait. this restaurant, its customer service and food brings shame to les halles uptown.

Although the food was good, it would have been nice to eat it within a half decent time period. Once the waiter took our orders, the appies came, the drinks came, and then we waited, the table next to us, that was seated after us were already eating their main course, the waiter then asked if we wanted to see a desert menu, I said it would be nice to have our meals first, there was no sorries, etc., etc., heh, who needs Paris when it's in your backdoor?

When a bar makes the wrong drinks thats fine. But when the bartender messes up the returned drinks something is wrong. It gets worse when the waiter storms off in a huff. When he did (finally) come back and was asked about a wine suggestion the answer was "I don't know what you like". Food was quite good but doesn't make up for the fact that the manager (on his own) saw a problem and felt he had to get involved. Bad service is one thing....but.

There are so few wonderful places like this dowtown. Most places close early but this place stays open late. I've never had such a tasty bisque in my life and the duck shepards pie is enormous and delicious! Everything is priced so well! I come back as often as I can. The staff deals with customers very well. Last time we were there a guy got really upset because he wanted a Corona and not any "fancy french sh**". They WHY did he go to a french place?? I was so embarrassed that a New Yorker would act that way. The manager very politely told the drunk man that he could leave and then gave everyone on the resturaunt a free glass of port for having to witness it. So sweet! We are treated so well every time we go there.

Pros: fantastic food/bargai, music/ambience, an oasis downtown

Like its older Flatiron sibling, this classic brasserie is best known for its meats---and dare we say, a first-rate French onion soup, oozing with cheesy goodness as well as the traditional cassoulet "Toulousain." Of course, the eatery is…
