It's party time at Tio Pepe, the venerable landmark in Greenwich Village. Since 1970, this delightful restaurant has charmed its way into the hearts of New Yorkers. Tio Pepe has managed to cook up all the right ingredients for success. Tio Pepe has been voted "numero uno" for its Spanish cuisine while food writers have lavished praise upon the wonderful Mexican specialties. Tio Pepe evokes the true spirit of both Spain and Mexico. It is one of the few restaurants that has successfully merged the best entrees from Spain such as Paella Valenciana, with the regional specialties of Mexico, such as a variety of sizzling fajitas. You will be immediately satisfied with your dining choices, all at a reasonable price.

Best Couscous in NY
by kaSi21
As Moroccan food lovers we were interested to see if Le Souk lived up to its reputation. We were not disappointed! We waited about 5mins to be seated and were given a nice table by the Bar. The restaurant itself is buzzing.. not in a bad way but in a bustling, alive kind of way. Our waiters were great! they were polite, funny and attentive without being in our faces. The food was great! The Couscous, made table side, was spectacular. Beware it is a little expensive $19 for Couscous and Meats BUT it is totally worth it!! Our mains were nice.. maybe not quite as amazing as the Couscous but still delicious. I had the Chicken Bastilla which was delicious.. the 'pastry' was really light and wasn't dripping in oil like at other places.. My Fiance had a Paella which although was very nice it wasn't as good as the Moroccan fare.. The only thing that stopped me from giving Le Souke a 5 star rating was the awful bathrooms! The woman's bathroom was gross! It really needed a good clean and general repair to broken tiles etc.. One other word of advice if you don't know the area and you are easily offended don't sit by the window.. the view across the street is a number of empty stores.

"DISCRIMINATION" from this restaurant!
by Uang
I just had dinner with my friend today. We ordered one appetizer and two main courses, no drink. The server and the food was good. But I have one thing that was not impress on this restaurant and won't come back again. My bill was $60.69 already plus tax but they put gratuity on the bill even I came only 2 persons. so the bill was $70.77 I was shock because I'm working in the restaurant as well and never put the gratuity just for 2 persons before. How was happened? Is it because we are the Asian or we didn't order the drink and dessert??? We felt that we'd got the "DISCRIMINATION!" from the server. I knew how much I should pay the tip for the restaurant because normally, whenever I go to restaurant, I always give the tip 20%.. After I got the bill I asked one server of the restaurant " Do you always put the gratuity every tables? I asked. and that server said " yes" ... That server name "Israel". I hope the restaurant will have the answer for this review because, this was not our first time and we never get any charge on it from here. Every time, we gave 20% on tip for the server as we understand how hard they work as the server!

Im obsessed with good food and always want to eat in a special place. Last Thursday I took a walk along West 4th in Greenwich Village and somehow I entered Tio Pepe. At the front doors a hostess with her big smile informed that paella festival from Spain is very good and indeed !! It was really good !!!
I enjoyed this Spanish -Mexican scene with romantic music and friendly staff that are nice and cares. The guys just take pleasure in giving a good service.
I had such a good time there. From now on I am a big fan of PAELLA !!!

A Great Place Bring a Friend
by PeaceOfNY
The menu may be a little predictable but the food is always up to par. It is moderatley priced but you won't be dissappointed. The great atmosphere combined with the reasonable prices and tasty food make it the perfect place to go on a first date, eat out on a night with your friends, or bring some out-of- towners. My boyfriend's family is English and they came over from England and this is where I brought them to eat. They loved it! I've also eaten here on dates. The service is great and the bathrooms are clean. I highly recommend the Nachos Camperos to start.

Yummy paella and plenty more!
by Choconut779
We went here on a hot NY afternoon and fell in love with Tio Pepe- the drinks were amazing, all cocktails were made with fresh berries, none of those sugary flavor syrups. The food was awesome too- especially the paella, which contained some of the most flavorful rice I have ever tried! Service was geat - very attentive and prompt..I will definitely be coming back soon!
Pros: Delicious cocktails and food, friendly service
Cons: Somewhat pricey

This was a great experience, from start to finish. We started with a Margarita and Pulpo a la Gallega as an appetizer, my Paella was out of this world. A couple next to us was celebrating their 20th First Date Aniversary and were very Happy to be back , I will recommended to all my friends.

Christmas Party
by garquica
I Booked a resetvation for the garden at Tio pepe for our company christmas party. I wanted it to be at night and to be available just for us, it had a fabolous decor to cheer our holiday spirit! the skylight and hanging lights and plants made a wonderful night! They were also featuring some specials from their inhouse chef wich were very interesting and Yum! I also made sure to have an open bar since their margaritas are so so so good i knew all my co workers would have more than two or three! At the end it came up on very well priced party the stuff was very respectful and corteus! i will make sure i book this place for my birthday as well and make even a bigger party!

Okay food.
by nguyensuzan
This is an okay place if you don't have the energy to look elsewhere in the neighborhood for food. There are many better places around. I went here with a friend and the service was terrible. They were very pushy with overpriced drinks. The food was overpriced as well. When my fajitas came out, I was disappointed. The portion was meager. I was hungry when I left.
Come here as a last resort! It just isn't worth it!
Pros: Lots of seating
Cons: price

Excellent paella
by ducarito15
went there with my boyfriend and some friends and the place was a lil crowded we were seated at the main area since the garden was packed! and how wouldn't since is so nice there. We were seated promtly and started with pitcher of red sangria and we had a guacamole table side made wich is very cool to see how they make it, there we decided to share a Paella valenciana it was excellent, there after we had a few mojitos and decided to try the mexican coffee, it was amazing and to finish we had some cucarachas on fire, that is great. The service overall was very good and pleasant, recomend to try the cucarachas!
Pros: promt seating and service
Cons: a lil loud

Not impressed!
by pricecheck1
Went to dinner there last Saturday night and we got seated right away - which was a plus. The restaurant itself is nice but they had a private party on the garden so no one could sit outside. The waiter came over pretty quickly after sat down and took out drink order. I got a mando margarita and my boyfriend got strawberry - I would not consider either anything special. They don't even have pitchers of margaritas so if that's the only reason you're going don't waste your time - they are relatively small and are $8.50 each. Their salsa was spicy tomato juice - disgusting. We both ordered burritos - I got the vegetarian and inside there was some rice, beans and steamed vegetable. There was no taste to any of it - the vegetables weren't cooked in anything - just plain. Such a dissappointment. My boyfriend got a shrimp burrito but the rice and beans were on the side - not inside the tortilla. What kind of burrito is that? Overall, the food was not very good. I read a lof of reviews about this place being good but I would never suggest going there. There are tons of other mexican places in this city that have good tasting food. Do yourself a favor and skip this place - it's definitely not worth it.

Called to reservation. CItySearch says kid friendly but person who answered phone said "not really" and I called back to confirm that he understand what I said and he said they have no kids menu.
I said I asked if you were kid friendly - No answer.
I would recommend families trying somewhere else with the kids

Spanish What????
by peeblesf
Ambience was great, decor nice, my waiter seemed confused. The food was the most bland food that I had ever tasted. When I am eating English food I expect some very subtle seasoning but not when I am eating Spanish food. My husband had a beef fajita that was simply a fill for his stomach. I had the shrimp dish in lobster sauce with a smattering of rice ( I guess there was not enough in the kitchen). We had a $27.00 pitcher of sangria that was so tasteless and it had little alchohol. Needless to say we will not be back. If you are interested in decor and getting off your feet after shopping and want something to eat, for my opinion there are other more suitable eats available in the neighborhood. Then again, if you like bland food then this is your place.
Pros: Great decor
Cons: Where is the seasoning

Food is good but service is so slow and very expensive
by zess4x
I found that the guacamole was good but for the money you pay, it wasnt very much. The paella was okay but nothing special. The sangria was very overpriced and not worth it. Overall I thought it was good but certainly nothing out of this world.

Cons: Very loud, too expensive

Best ambience ,serviceand atmosphere for having a memorable goodtime.
by abkb
I have been dining at Tio Pepe for 15 years and my thirteen year old son ingested his first solid food at Tio Pepe's while I looked on in trepidation. Jimmy, the owner, an old hand at raising kids (he has three) told me to relax and let my son, Elias, enjoy the food. Boy was he right. Elias has been eating there since and loves the chicken and rice especially.
The service is attentive and reasonably quick. The "caring" of the staff as to your satisfaction is "first rate" and food is whisked away at any signs of displeasure. The drinks are plentiful and tasteful and cause even non-Spanish speaking people to sign Spanish odes with abandon. A member of the owner's family is usually around in the evening-often seen dining along with patrons.
I have brought friends and professional colleagues and always gotten positive reviews after a meal.
Prices are moderate and the good excellent. Parking is even possible after seven (the side contiguous to the restaurant does not have meters--hard to believe. Enjoy!
Pros: Great Food and drinks
Cons: No corned beef. Just kidding. Can get noisy.

Avoid for private party
by yokipi
I reserved tio pepe for my supervisor's retirement party. When we signed the contract the menu we chose was open bar (sangria, wine, beer) for two hours. The day of the party the waiter gave me a hard time because on of the guest asked for a corona wich is an imported beer. I explained to him the contract said nothing about only domestic beer for the open bar. The entree was very late for some of the guest they had to practicaly watch other people eat. We had to keep asking for the sangria pitchers to be filled. After a few pitchers the guest were complaining because they were very weak in alcohol. We had salmon and veg. everybody was so surprised because the little vegetables that came with it. Never will return .

VIVA TIO PEPE
by cvanlindt
I have been going to Tio Pepe's for five years now and it is my favorite in NY. I have NEVER ever experienced poor service in the restaurant. Great waiter service is the norm. We are always greeted as we enter and we see the same being done to all that enter the restaurant. The Langosta Rellena is killer as is the pulpo gallego. The pulpo is the BEST my wife and I have tasted in NYC. Too bad the two disgruntled patrons had a bad waiter. It was probably the same person but I have never witnessed this. Do not judge this restaurant on those two reviews. In the five years I have been coming I have dined with my wife, family and friends and always it has been a great experience. I do not work for Tio Pepe. VIVA TIO PEPE!!!!!
Pros: Friendly Service
Cons: Parking

This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in NYC. The waitstaff was rude. They brought us the wrong item and then argued with us about what we had ordered, only begrudingly bringing us what we had actually ordered. The salad we ordered had spoiled lettuce in it. We ended up leaving without even eating we were so disgusted with the place. There are a number of great restaurants in the village and I'll be going to one of them next time.
Pros: good location
Cons: everything else

Terrible, Terrible, Terrible! I've had better Mexican food at Chipotle fast food chain!
by chica_nyc
Just visited Tio Pepe on Friday night with a dozen friends to celebrate a birthday. The food was blah..the sangria was watered down...and the waiter was rude! I'm convinced the previous reviews were written by the restaurant owners! Our waiter was so pushy and rude. Since it was a large party and the tip was a mandatory %...he kept on pushing us to order more than what we wanted. We ordered a pitcher of sangria to start and he said it wasn't enough...you need at least 2. Fine...bring us 2 pitchers. Some of us order soda and he made a nasty comment "It's Friday, you should drink and party!" We ordered 3 guacomoles to share for the table and he kept on repeating..."It's not enough, it's not enough!" We really wanted to tell him to shut up and take a chill pill. But we bit our tongue b/c we didn't want them to mess with our food. When the food finally did arrive, it was very disappointing. Seriously...Taco Bell can do better than this. It was very mediocre. Def will not go back again and I highly do not recommend it. The only thing I can commend them about is the reservation process. They were quick and polite when I called in the reservation and gave me no problem at all. But everything went downhill from there.
Pros: Reservation was easy
Cons: Food, drinks and service were terrible

Paella with lobster: Better than my mum's!!!
by pakito
We had a 10 people party in The Garden at Tio Pepe's last Sunday, where believe, i would come back every week if i'd live in NYC, it's a shame that I just came on holidays from Spain, where i am from. Well, we drunk mojitos (outstanding) and lots of red sangria (taaaaste it!!!) and ordered 7 tapas to share like: Guacamole (fresh made right in front of your table by Very well skilled waiter) Calamari Sinaloa, 2 orders of Nachos (beef and chicken), Gambas Ajillo (OMG!!) and 2 Plato Iberico (nothing better to feel like at home).
Our waiter was taking care of us all the time even when he was very busy with the other tons of people seating at The Garden, very nice place for parties! In general service was great, fast and right, everything on time. I had the Paella Valenciana with lobster..yummmmy!! My mum couldn't make it better (sorry baby.. :) ) It's a shame that i'm coming back to Spain within 4 days...I won't forget such special night with my good friends at Tio Pepe...did i mention desert??? go see by yourself!!

The Worst Food I Have Ever Had In This City- No Exaggeration
by creativelolita
We went for dinner. The mojito was warm, the "Nacho's" were soggy chips soaked in cold cheese with cold beans. The Fajitas were low-grade steak in about an inch of oil (and we asked them to do "light oil" so I can only imagine) and the paella was blande and repulsive. We did not even eat our dinner. It was so bad we left and had ice cream cones for a meal.
Pros: Nada
Cons: Food

Great place for a large party of 15+
by Ainney
Went there this past Saturday evening for my birthday with many friends/family and we had an absolute great time. Alejandro, our waiter was good to work with from the moment I called to the moment we left...minus one token drunk man at the bar...but otherwise...a great place and couldn't have asked for a better time.

YUM! Very authentic!
by jbsquared
All I can say is that the servers and bartenders here ROCK! Walked in for $5 margaritas- got more than we bargained for- a drunk mother (after they kept hooking us up with free rounds). OK- so first, get margaritas (One guy danced the whole time behind the bar!). Next, order made-at-the-table guacamole- crushed and prepared to your liking by a cute Dominican man. Next, don't let server give your mother another margarita. For dinner, paella (any style) or shrimp fajitas- couldn't get enough. Finally, order a round of waters and fried ice cream. YUMMO. Stumble out with your doggie bag, a lil' dizziness, and full belly. Good times had by all!
Pros: drinks and food- fun and lively place
Cons: had to leave

Great Paella
by confused1983
My girlfriend and I were looking for some good Mexican/Spanish food and so we found this place on Citysearch. We started with a large table side guacamole, and it was delicious, although it was huge and probably would have been better split by three or more people. My girlfriend and I both got paella dishes and we both thought our dishes were absolutely wonderful. She got the Arroz con Pollo and I got the Paella Valenciana, and everywhere I took a bite of food form there was a good sized piece of seafood or chorizo. The rice was moist and tasty and it was overall a good dinner. Service was also good and attentive, although they did mess up our drink order on our 2nd order and instead of sangria gave us another round of our 1st drinks, but since we liked our drinks we just stuck with it. And the drinks were quite expensive and two rounds really brought up a bill that otherwise would have been relatively cheap.
Pros: Paella, Guacamole, Margaritas
Cons: Expensive Drinks

THIS RESTAURANT IS TERRIBLE
by seancal
I visited this restaurant a few weeks back with my girlfriend on a rainy Sunday night. We arrived at around 12:15am and were informed 3 times by 3 diffent people that the kitchen closed at 1am. I took a look at the wine list (nothing special) so we ordered 2 beers. For dinner I ordered Lubina a la Vasca (Sea Bass) and my girlfriend had Chicken and Rice. When I asked for some bread I was told that there was none left and that I could have some tortillas. The Sea Bass was served with a few clams, mussels, and frozen peas as a vegetable. The rice that came with it was COLD. I guess they didn't have time to put it in the microwave. When I tried the fish a knew immediately that it was spoiled. I sat with the plate for 15 minutes before I could get anyone's attention. (By the way, there was only 1 other table in the restaurant). Finally the waiter came over and I explained to him the fish had gone bad. He took the plate away and I never saw him again. The food runner came and told me that I couldn't order anything else because the kitchen was now closed. I ended up sharing my girlfriend's Chicken and Rice which was edible except for the burnt rice at the bottom of the plate. To my surprise when I asked for the check, a basket of bread was brought out with it! I think that this place really has to get it's act together if it wants to be considered a serious restaurant and not just a tourist trap, which it is now. Well I guess that you can't take a Spanish restaurant that serves Mexican food serious anyway. Or is this a Mexican restaurant serving Spainish food?
