New York City has the nation's largest police department and a huge number of its most notorious criminals and gangs. Just imagine how incredible it would be to visit a museum that presented the department's history and its current operations with compelling storytelling.

You'll have to keep on imagining. The NYC Police Museum has a fair number of classic artifacts but they appear to have been mounted and glossed by a less than ordinarily talented 3rd grade art class. If you like old guns and uniforms and hidden weapons, it's probably worth a visit but your heart will cry at what could have been.

Best thing I learned: No one on the police force every came up with the idea of putting sirens on police cars. A guy wrote in to the commissioner and suggested the idea as a means of getting people to vacate the street for vehicles on emergency missions.

I though this would be an interesting museum to visit on my free time but I was wrong. It was so small. I think the local police headquarters was larger than this. Although it was interesting, it was too small. They had a whole showcase of guns which was very interesting indeed but if the museum would get any bigger it would've been perfect. They also have booths of all sorts of interesting stuff like radios which have to do with the history of the taskforce. The admission price was fair for such a small museum. Overall the museum was quite unique but it was too small.

In between all the huge buildings downtown is the Police Museum, in an old precinct building. It's donation only, and it has three, somewhat sparse, floors of memorabilia of 200 years of NYC police squad. Lots of interesting stuff, including old ID tags of criminals before the age of fingerprinting, and a display on what women cops had to wear back in the day. Good, informative fun, and a display on the tv show Law and Order.
