I don't even know where to start... everything at Alta is wonderful! I don't even like brussel sprouts and tried them - they are amazing! The white wine sangria is out of this world! The beef short ribs are amazing, and so is their special dessert. They will do their best to get you in, but its best to make reservations or get there early... Since I first tried it I have been back weekly / monthly... It's a must eat!

Cons: hard to get in

It's a great place to have drinks and nibble on great food, but if you just go for dinner you may leave hungry. The menu is very well priced. There were two of us. We had 7 plates, 1 dessert and two bottles of sparkling water. The bill came to $102. The same amount of money spent at another restaurant would have left us more satisfied. What put the final nail on the coffin for this place for me is that they only take American Express. Great place, just don't go hungry.

I had one of the best dishes I've ever eaten here. This is a spanish tapas place where the food is out of this world. Definitely worth the trek into manhattan.

They should rename it to "Bajo" (low in spanish)
I took a date over there and it was one of my worst dates ever. and I have been around the block once or twice.

first, you cant carry a decent conversation, the place is crowded and the acoustics are terrible, if you are ok with screaming over your food - go for it, thats your problem, if you look for an intimate conversation, decent space between tables, some kind of magic while you eat with your partner then avoid at all cost. the food was ok, I wasnt blown away but again, I could not really enjoy it in that setting. it was very hot over there and took a while untill the AC was turned on- I am speaking about august in new york city. seriously, I am pretty open minded person and easy to satisfy and not a new comer to the city - do yourself a favor and stay away, unless you like the vulgar scene.

I love going here. Taking out of town friends through the kitchen to the dining room that faces 10th Street is always fun. Hanging and having nibbles at the bar is a perfect mid-week hang, too. And in winter, you can't beat fireplace-side seating.

This place is gorgeous - it makes you feel like you've stepped out of NYC and into a beautiful home somewhere in Spain. The food is amazing and the menu offers almost anything you can think of!

The food is good but it is served way too fast. I felt like I was in a competitive eating contest. For the price, I wish the waitress had advised us on this because it's a lot of money to feel rushed through a meal. If you go, order in stages.

The waitresses were pleasant but seemed disinterested in us, even though it was a Monday and the restaurant wasn't crowded.

But it is a beautiful room and good for a group.

About a month ago I went down to Alta on a Tuesday night and the bartender was so snotty to us. He treated us like idiots when we asked too many questions and rolled his eyes a few times. Worse yet there was another bartender, a young nice kid and the nasty one treated him like dirt... even said "get outta my way" when walking by him. When the young guy stood up for himself the nasty one started demeaning him. I felt bad for him. I didn't think too much of it after but then we came back again last Tuesday to find the same nasty bartender being even nastier to us. He took forever to get to us and the bar wasn't too packed. When he finally came over he just seemed like he had somewhere else to be. At the end he just slapped the bill down in front of us and walked away.....the food is great but steer clear of the short bald bartender !!!

while the food is great (stil great after coming here a few times), quality of service has drastically deteriorated, enough for me to say I am not coming back. i was so happy my birthday party mood didnt get affected by it, but dont think I need that experience ever again.
our waiter, literally didnt know what they had on the wine list or menu (i.e. he said few dishes and wines were not any more available and had to go to check again to find out that they were). he could not hear anything we ordered, he was forgetting to bring us glasses of wine, glasses of water, etc etc. and it was not that easy to find his attention when we needed it either.
on top of it at the end of the party another waiter started shouting at a friend of mine (yes, I cant believe it, but it was very good we were in too good a mood to have it affect us) because we have OVERSTAYED our allocated time - 2hrs and 40 minutes, that is all what you have even if it is your birthday... plus by paining your bill you do get the right of getting shouted at!

I took a date there the other night (Saturday) and it was great...its very small looking from the outside but once you get in its a beautiful restaurant. We were seated upstairs in a very rustic looking room overlooking the main floor. The food was great and the Sangria is awesome. I just got home from Madrid a few weeks ago and had gotten into the Tapas thing. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, recommended some great dishes and was very attentive. The food came quickly (get the summer salad) and the ambience just helped to spawn conversation. All in all a positive experience...these other reviewers, not too sure what they went through but I could not disagree with them more.

I made a reservation for 10 people here on a Saturday night. We were seated immediately, and knew right off the bat we wanted the best value so we ordered "The Whole Shebang" (the entire menu). They failed to bring out a couple of dishes, and duplicated a couple of others, but when we voiced (nicely) that certain plates were missing, the manager gave us all a free round of shots! She also knocked some drinks off our tab.

Alta offers the kind of customer service that is a rarity these days, especially at hip and trendy restaurants like Alta. I don't normally write reviews for restaurants but this I had to share. The food is impeccable, but I would return here just to know the management really value its clientele. Never did I feel rushed to leave, either, which is also rare in this city!

I went there for a friend's birthday party and it was a lot of fun! The rustic decor and the romantic ambience gave us a warm, cozy feeling inside. Our waiter was very knowledgable and helpful and very prompt with our orders. As alcoholics and wine connoiseurs we appreciated the lovely wine and cocktail list. The sangrias are a must! The tapas were delicious! We had almost everything on the menu because we were a big group. The portions were a bit small, but I think it was enough for everyone. My favorite dishes were the fried goatcheese and pintos of foie gras terrine and strawberries! I would definitely go back.

The food and atmosphere was the best. What a nice surprise for a spot in the village. This is a place for foodies and people with a diverse palette. It's tasty and filling. You must try the Sangria!

Food was tasty, but not overly unique. Good wine selection by the glass and interesting cocktails. The place is gorgeous - really unique for that area. Major downside was that it seemed as though the staff could care less about serving its guests. Food came out way to quickly - certain dishes within a minute of being ordered. Try it once, good for dates.

As soon as we got there, the attitude we received was horrible. The waiter started off by telling us that the kitchen closed at 11 so we better order quickly, although it was only 9:15. I had asked if they had pitchers of sangria, only for him to tell me and hand motion at the shape of the glass as if he was making fun of me for asking such a ridiculous questions. Throughout the meal he stopped by many times to rush us and when we had questions, he was very rude with his answers. When I asked if I could have something prepared without the spices, he answered " if we were at your restaurant then yes, but we're not at your restaurant." I was mortified and somewhat embarrassed for recommending the place. We actually spoke to the manager about him, only to hear that it was busy and he must be having a hard day. It was a Wednesday night, not a Saturday night and I expect to be treated with respect any night of the week. The food is excellent, but if you want a pleasant dining experience, I would not recommend.

I went to Alta for a friend's birthday. It's really cute, and has a great atmosphere. However, from the moment we sat at our table, we noted to rude service. Our server hurried our orders, was annoyed when we ordered further plates, and was very hard to find when we wanted to new drinks. The servers who brought out the plates brought us several dishes we hadn't order, and were annoyed when we said we hadn't order them. After eating, the server hovered around our table as we paid the bill, pretty much watching me as I was counting out the bills. As we were finishing our last drink after we paid, we received many nasty looks from the servers, as well as the hostess. We were eventually asked to leave our table and finish our drink in the bar. The food was great, and I'd love to go back, but won't because of one of the ruddest staffs I've encountered.

we came here for my sisters birthday, not a party or anything, just the family.. it was 4 of us.. and my mother is a vegetarian.. the rest of us, we eat anything and everything! but we chose this place because of its abundance of vegetarian options.. and let me tell you.. i consider myself a carnivore, i love meat.. but some of the vegetarian tapas were INCREDIBLY tasty.. and our server was awesome!! i dont know anyone else that would do this, but before coming, my parents printed off a menu and highlighted stuff they wanted to try.. my sister and i just went with it, circled a few things we wanted, and handed the list over to our waitress.. and she did marvelously! she brought out only a few items at a time so our table was never cluttered and she time it perfectly that our table was never empty.. we actually ended up ordering even more.. not because we weren't full.. we were STUFFED, but because we literally wanted to try as much as we could.. we even contemplated the "get it all" deal but then thought better of it considering it was only 4 of us.. but if.. rather when.. i do return, im going to bring a bunch of my friends and "get it all for $350" this place really is that good.. i would give it a 5 star rating, but that i reserve for when i walk out of a restaurant and say "this is one of the best meals ive ever had.." this place came close.. if there was a decimal system, i would give a 4.65..

This was my first time and certainly not my last! Let's start off with making reservations - so delightful! The man who helped me placed a reservation was so nice and informativative I was excited about eating there before I had seen the place. The ambience is so warm, hip and perfect for great conversation. Me and 3 of my girl friends had a great table with a calm and pleasant server who did a great job recommending the amount each person should order and what dishes we might like better than others. And she was right!!! Everything was tasty - roasted eggplant spread and the gnocchi were by far the best deliciousness we had ever experienced! the Sangria was strong and refreshing and the desserts were a perfect way to end the meal.... the cornbread dish with fruit was unique and mouth watering. The only down side was they forgot a second order of tapas and it took forever to get a few dishes... but with the top notch treatment our server was giving us and the conversation we were having... we didn't mind the wait! We also never felt rushed to leave the table and in my book that was 100 bonus points. Nothing worse than being rushed out of your reservations. I can't wait to go back! Definitely check this place out!

Honestly, great food. Non-traditional tapas. Ask for the servers suggestions, they will direct you to the most savory dishes. Tuna tartare is quite unique and sensational, as it the carpaccio. The razor clams are yummy too. Its really a great space and would be great for a group. The have a "whole shebang" option for about $350.... good for 7 or more. Oh, did I mention.... great wine.

I've eaten here at least five times already, and I've been always impressed. This Friday I brought my friends and was seated upstairs. Everything that we ordered was just great. You have to try Tuna, Duck and Brussels sprouts!!! The wine list is really great with wide selection and they seem to be so carefully chosen. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming, starting with bartenders, hostess and wait staff.
I would recommend this place happily and definitely coming back!!!

My partner and I have made this our regular haunt.
Weekday evenings after work are always best as weekends get a bit over-run by young suburbanites who have come in via the PATH.

We have sat at a table in the back and upstairs and highly recommend you pull up a stool at the bar and make nice with your bartenders!
After reading most of the reviews on this place, I agree on several points:
The hostess is always unfriendly; you circumvent this unpleasantry by sitting at the bar.
The white and rose wines are also never cold enough. Now this point baffles my partner and I because they have a trough at the bar that displays bottles of both ON ICE; for a bar of this size not to be able to serve a cold glass of wine is ridiculous.
That being said, I would recommend the sangria, either white or red. Both are great and will knock your socks off!
Some of the bartenders are friendlier than others, but if you become a regular, there are those who will take care of you and ensure you come back.
The food is always good. We've had virtually everything on the menu and there are really no misses.
There are items that are musts though: the crispy brussel sprouts are fantastic-- as are the bacon wrapped dates and olives.

Re-cap:
go during the week
get there early
sit at the bar
avoid the bitchy hostess
be pleasant to your bartender! take good care of them and they will in turn take good care of you!
order the brussel sprouts and a glass of sangria and shut up.

For starters this is the only place I've ever seen in Manhattan that will tell you that your reservation was dropped becuase YOU didn't call THEM to confirm that day.

The hostess was rude from start ro finish. Cold, abrupt, just unpleasent to deal with. The rest of the staff seemed disinterested at best. The only smile I saw the whole time was from a Sous Chef as they led us through the kitchen to a small from room with open windows (and no AC) for our table. Although no large parties left while we waited, they insisted on making us wait 30 minutes to be seated, due to our 'unconfirmed reservation.'

The 15 minutes we sat there sweating waiting for menus was unpleasent at best. I can't rate their food since we left after that 15 minutes (still without even a greating for the waiter) though a friend who had eaten there in the past said it was unremarkable at best.

Despite the fact that I realize that they may have had an off night, there was nothing redeeming with the evening and I would not give them a second chance. I would give 0 stars if citysearch would let me.

This place, might very well be, the most amazingly, awful place. Alta is a true find! Seriously, if you find it, pat yourself on the back and call yourself Magellan. Lucky for me, the restaurant was kind enough to disregard just enough reservations to litter the street with its own patrons. More impressive than its apathy towards its customers was Alta's ability to emit enough heat and humidity to add "SPA" to its list of amenities. I have to admit, walking through the kitchen was pretty cool. What a find!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I went for a casual Friday dinner. We showed up about 15 minutes early for our reservation and were seated immediatly. We ordered five dishes which, contrary to the waitresses recommendation, was more than enough food for the both of us. The wine list was accomodating and we ordered an affordable and enjoyable Spanish red. The atmoshphere was young and exciting. The food was, as anticipated, small dishes of well prepared tasty dishes. The service left something to be expected. Althought the server was pleasent, she recommended that we order more food than we needed and never came back to take our dessert order. With more attentive service this would have been an great meal. Good food, great value, decent service. I would be willing to try it again.

I used to like Alta. And I want to love Alta and frequent the place given it is one block from my house, but a few months ago, I went on a tuesday night and sat at the bar with a friend. The bartender completely ignored us and when we flagged him down to order wine/food, it appeared it was a huge burden for him. He continued to ignore us the entire night. I was so put off by the experience that I swore I would not go back. But it is one block from my house. So I thought I should give it another chance. Two fridays ago, I went again. There were no seats at the bar so I put my stuff down and stood at the bar for 25 minutes while the same bartender looked over my head, down the bar, at anything other than me. They were busy but he could have acknowledged me. When my friends showed up, since I still did not have a drink, we just walked across the street to Piadina, where they are incredibly nice.

I have eaten at Alta probably 5-6 times. The food is okay. Not worth putting up w/ the rude bartenders to eat there.

I went here w/ my cousins last night and had a really wonderful dinner. We ordered a great selection of tapas - all of which I enjoyed. The standout was the Coco flatbread. The brussel sprouts were surprisingly good. Our server was friendly and the decor was beautiful. I felt like I was eating in a very special, intimate restaurant. The only bad things were the small table (difficult for all of our small plates + glasses to fit on) and the noise level. We were seated upstairs which I've been told is generally quieter, but the acoustics really carry chatter. I've heard that downstairs is even rowdier. Be prepared to talk loudly so that you can hold an audible conversation !

Tuesday night around 830pm, met up with a date at the bar. There was no crowd at this time, allowing very quick and friendly bar staff, and yes the food was great. The lamb meatballs were delicious, of course tapas so only had 4 per plate, so of course tried some other plates on the menu... stuffed pea ravioli I too enjoyed, along with a few other dishes. Average pricing for good city tapas restaurant... around 60 for the night for a few glasses of wine, 1 beer, and 4 unique plates of food. I would go back, makes a great mid-evening, mid-week place to meet a date to sit, talk, drink at the bar.

Wish I had read reviews on this site BEFORE I went here with friends for dinner.
Food was OK, but we experienced many of the negative things that other people have mentioned such as a HUGE, HOT & UNCOMFORTABLE FIRE display & visible vermin upstairs near the kitchen/bathroom area.
The place is cute inside, but we'll go somplace cleaner & with a more comfortable temperature the next time we want Spanish food.

Good food, but a HOT fire & a staff who's main focus is keeping it hot & roaring, rather than refilling water glasses & attending to their paying customers.
While the food was interesting & tasty, there's too much competition in the NY restaurant scene for servers to be so easily distracted by something as silly as a fire place or to be negligent of their paying guests.
"They" say that if you ate 3 meals a day in a different restaurant in NY every day of the week, you'd never eat in the same restaurant.
That said, I'm sure there are plenty of other tapas restaurants in NY, for my friends & me to try & I see no need to return to Alta.
And hopefully, there are also other tapas restaurants that that do not have hot, ROARING fires & a silly, misguided staff.

When seated in front of the fireplace, which at the time contained a small, gentle fire, my party of 4 was thriled. That is until - while in the midst of our meal, a disheveled guy who claimed to be the manager began stoking it with all the testosterone-fueled zeal of an undersexed a cave man!
"Grunt! Me manager - me make 'em fire!"
When we politely asked that he not make a huge, hot blaze within inches of our faces & our glasses of chilled $15.00 a glass wine, we were told that we could move & were rudely asked why we sat there there if we didn't like the fire (me manager - me make 'em fire!).
Well Tarzan, that's because we weren't given a choice of tables, nor were we told to beware of the pyromaniac beast known as The Manager (who makes fire).
So while the food was very good, I was saddened by such thoughtless & insensitive treatment by a person who - if he is inded the manager - is doing a great job of helping to solidify the reputation that NYC's restaurants have earned over the years as being rude, uncaring, callous & snobbish.
Que lastima.

Alta is my new favorite restaurant. Despite what you might read in other reviews, I've been here a number of times and have never experienced a rude staff member or seen any rodents. Each time I go, the place is packed so obviously these patrons are having a similar experience to mine. The bartenders may be a bit curt but thats because its BUSY and this is NY so get over it. The interior is warm, inviting and unique. The wine list is excellent and the Tapas are simply fantastic. Start with the olives and work your way down the list to the steak with chimichurri. The portions are also perfect for sharing. I'm planning a group outing next time to try the whole she-bang.

I enjoy this neighborhood spot, but I have been there twice in the past year and have seen rodents (small and black with a little tail) running around the floor upstairs both times! I mentioned this to the waitress and she had the nerve to tell me, "well, you are in the West Village." I live in the West Village and I do not live with rodents!

I'm confused by the harsh reviews on this site. Who are these people? I've been here twice and the food was excellent. My friends who have gone also give good reviews. For those reviewers who find it too expensive, I'm curious as to where they go for good tapas. I find the prices less expensive than other tapas restaurants I've frequented, and the food as good or better. The service was neutral, neither great nor bad. I'd recommend this place, and I'll definitely be back.

And save your money. This tapas place is AWFUL! My friend and I decided to check it out this evening. We were impressed with the atmosphere. Cool, not cramped, etc. But that's where the good ended. The service was slow, the prices were absurd, and everything was marinated in salt. The signature brussel sprouts were inedible. Save your money and go anywhere else!

I just ate here for the first time last night and loved it. I had the brussel sprouts dish that came highly recommended and was not disappointed. All of the entree dishes that I ordered were recommended by the server and all were quite good. I also would recommend the sangria since it is different than most others. The atmosphere was quiet and cozy and I sat close to the fireplace which made the experience that much better.

If overly oily, excessively salty, and inappropriately sugary foods are your desire look no further. The chef, obviously trying to put a spin on traditional tapas has neither the talent nor the flair; he/she is obviously a vulgar gourmand, not a gourmet. We tasted nearly every dish trying (in vain) to find something palatable, but could not. The food sat in my stomach all night and was still unpleasantly curled (or curdled) up there in the morning. The restaurant seems set up for drinkers and to maximize food profits. Even so, I was unable to get past the first two sips of the red wine I ordered; it was extremely acidic. I shifted to canned Sapporo beer. The white wine my date had was better, but nothing special. The profit motive is clear from the types of foods served-- tapas of undistinguished white bread (with a side of saccharine baba ganoush, tasting like a cross between tartar sauce and sweet pickle relish), potatoes au gratin, breaded and fried cream cheese, Brussels sprouts burned and drowned in oil, etc. Also, the restaurant is NOT vegetarian/vegan friendly as one of our party can attest. I rarely write reviews, but when I have such a bad food experience I want to warn others. Avoid!

I've been coming to Alta since it opened a couple of years ago. I've had dates here and come with larger groups and ordered the whole shebang. I have to say I have never had a dud meal and it ranks up there with the best tapas in NYC. Certainly better than Pipa. Memorable dishes have inluded the deep fried goats cheese with lavender honey, the shell steak, the boring sounding but extraordinary spinach and dried cherry salad, the clams with cauliflower & raisins (weird but works well) and the excellent crema catalana. The one down side - you do want to order quite a few dishes and so it can work out $$$. We've never experienced problems with service or seen rodents/roaches. But then this is NYC so I guess they are everywhere. However I don't think it's a reflection on hygiene. The kitchen is open plan and you can clearly see it when you walk to the upstairs part of Alta. I don't think they would display a dirty kitchen. Alta's always looks pretty spotless to me.

During a visit the restaurant, I couldn't help but notice a giant waterbug by the kitchen and then several rodents running around during my dinner. Although at first my choice of tapas were tasty, I began to think of how unclean the kitchen might be if these creatures were visbile to customers. I will never go back.

A few weeks ago I decided to stop in at Alta for a bite to eat and a few drinks. I will say that the Sangria was good (luckily) and three of them definitely lessened the shock of my overall experience. Prices were about average for this area of the city and I ordered a few items from the menu. While I waited for my food to be served I was greeted by a cute little pest. OK, I live in the city and I know that rodents are sort of everywhere, so I threw him a piece of my bread and left it at that. A short while later, however, when a c0ckr0ach scurried past my table, I decided that cleanliness is a practice that I like to see observed in my "fine dining" eateries of choice. I asked for the tab and went down the street for a slice of pizza.

Went with a small group recently for dinner. The menu is varied with something for everyone. Some of the dishes were very good like the chorizo, shrimp, quail and the steak. Others were simply bland. The desserts were good. Our server was not very attentive. Pleasant atmosphere and nice location made it an overall decent meal.

The fireplace was warm, the staff was cold. We arrived early on a Monday and a tall blond woman refused to seat us in the main dining room near the fireplace eventhough the place was literally empty. We had already spent $40 on wine at the bar and she rudely would not listen to our request for a different table depite the fact that only one table was occupied (She inexplicably tried to put us right next to the only other couple in the empty restaurant). We had previously asked what the policy was for the table near the fireplace and were told "no reservations, first come, first serve." Well, we were the only ones there and were not accomadated. We decided to leave rather than deal with such bizarre behaviour. While at the bar we were planning to come back with some other friends but after this kind of display, we would not even consider it. Shameful and cruel.

When I'm asked to give a recommendation for a date place this is one of the first places that comes to mind. Food is carefully prepared, although portions should not be expected to be big, but taste makes up for size. Tapas in general are fun to share on a date but at Alta, w/ the fireplace going, the room glowing, the long dramatic drapery feel, the mood is set perfectly. And you won't be too full for dessert. And if that doesn't fill you, there's always pizza around the corner.
