great tanning salon :) i love this place. tanning is like, my treat for the week. i've cut out starbucks and started brewing at home - but i won't give up my twelve minutes of bliss at a salon. my other place closed and this place was the newest one in my neighborhood. they have good deals, just ask them what they offer new clients and they'll give you a whole slew of options. very clean. great tan too :)
The receptionist was very nice and informative. However, the bed was outdated and the bulbs did not seem strong at all, like maybe they hadn't replaced them in a while. I ended up spending $45 on one tan and a packet of lotion. I spent twenty minutes in the bed and don't feel like I got any color at all. Of course, I could go back, but it would be pretty expensive. They said you needed an appointment for the spray tan. I expected more too from the SOHO location. The decor seemed old and outdated as well. Also, I remembered the two for one deal on the way out and asked the receptionist about it. She said she just forgot to mention it to me when I signed up. I think they don't mention it unless you ask about it. Anyway, I probably have a free tan now, but I'm not sure I'd go back. I'm going to try City Sun and I'll let you know how that goes...
Pros: Very Friendly and Knowledgeable Staff
Cons: Bed Seemed Old; Confusing Point System; and Decor
I just joined Citysearch and saw that Portofino was #1 nominated for best tanning salon in the city. I would have to agree. It is always a pleasant surprise how much I enjoy going there. I found the salon after a friend came to a wedding looking gorgeous and tan and raved about it. I like to get a spray tan whenever I know I am going out for a special occasion. The whole process takes about 30 minutes and the spray girl is so sweet and makes you feel totally comfy stripping down to nothing... but be warned that you have to get a mani/pedi BEFORE the spray. I almost made that mistake my first time. Ask for Maria or Stella--they have been great. OH and the girls at the desk are fun too. haha lots of good things to share about this place :o)
Pros: kind staff, clean place, best spray tanning results
Cons: not open 24 hours
I went to Portofino and the place was awesome. They told me to go and review them online if I liked my experience. Well, I am here doing just that! Very clean place, which is important to me. The beds all look brand new and shiny and the one I used gave me color that I could see even as I walked out. I liked the staff and the candy they have for you when you walk through the door!
Pros: Good atmosphere, new machines, nice staff
I went to Portofino today and got 2 personal spray tans for $99. That is awesome!!!! I have heard of places that charge $99 for just one. This place is good, the girl is skilled, and I love the color I've got. Will definitely be going back here instead of the other place I used to go.
Pros: That is a sick deal
I got an awesome spray tan here. My mom has been spray tanning back at home and she urged me to try it. I chose this place because it seemed nice and kind of upscale. I figured, for my first time I wanted to try it at a nice place. I loved it and really liked the girl that did the spray tanning, too. I sometimes am cheap about tipping, but I gave this girl a fat tip because I was so impressed. Highly recommend!
Pros: Awesome color, no sun damage
My doctor actually told me to go tanning. Not a joke. Because I don't ever see the sun here in the city, it turns out that I have a Vitamin D deficiency. Hence-PORTOFINO! The staff there is so helpful. The girl picked out a lotion for my sensitive skin and recommended the best tanning machine for me. I felt a little weird the first time tanning, but now I've visited a couple of times and it is a nice break in my busy work schedule.
Pros: recommended, boosts my spirits
Cons: I don't really go for the dark tan
Portofino Tanning is the best tanning salon in New York City (perhaps in the world), hands down.
The staff is unusually knowledgeable, friendly and eager to help. They make sure you get the deepest tan possible without burning. They take the time to get to know each customer and always check in with me to see how I like my tanning results. The managers are in the salon on a regular basis and know every customer by name. Walk in the front door and you'll feel like you've stepped into a party with a group of old friends.
The beds are always clean and they have XM radios set up in each room. The have a variety of other services available too like teeth whitening and spray tans, but I haven't tried those yet myself. (I have been meaning to check out the UV free sprays) It IS a little odd that they are tucked away on the 4th floor.
Bottom line: I'll never tan anywhere else!
Pros: great tanning results, employees go above and beyond, clean
Cons: on the 4th floor, hard to find
I went to Portofino after reading all the great reviews here. I really wish I didn't and I'm very disappointed. The woman who did my tan was not very nice and didn't really seem to wanna be there. (which is fine just don't show it to me....) the color she did was not the one I asked for. Therefore she had to do it all over again. The Spray itself was very bad quality (I think it went bad). It took hours to dry....
My skin is looks awful my tan is uneven I have spots of color all over my body and my skin tone is Orange at places and dark and unfaltering at others.
Thank God this will fade eventually . Instead of bragging about my tan I need to hide it with long sleeves in the middle of the summer.
VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I will NEVER go back there again.
Cons: unprofessional staff
I have never tanned in my life because of all of the skin care hype. BUT I am getting married in about a month and I decided I couldn't be in that white dress, getting hundreds of pictures taken, and look like a pale ghost fading into my bridal gown.
SOoo--off to Portofino I went. I called first and chatted with a gal who was so friendly and patient as I asked a million questions. She eased my fear and simplified this process. I came in, bought an intro package, a bottle of tanning lotion that is made for sensitive skin, and bit the bullet. My first experience was such a surprisingly pleasant one. I will be back all month to build up what will hopefully be a nice little wedding day tan. I would recommend this place for anyone with anxiety about tanning, or wants to really feel in good hands.
Pros: knowledgable, friendly, convenient location
Cons: it's tanning...
Clean, friendly and all brand new. I'm relatively new to tanning, but the front desk staff was polite and helpful, and the pricing was straightforward--no pressure to buy stuff I didn't need. I'm definitely impressed with this place.
Pros: nice, friendly
Cons: none yet
I have fair skin and can't do the tanning machines so I tried out the airbrushing after my friend suggested it. I bought a series of 10 sprays to last me through the summer and with this awful weather lately, I am so glad I did. I shave, scrub and bring grungy clothes to throw on afterward. Stella and Yadira are the two technicians I have had and both are so sweet, professional and thorough. I usually opt for their disposable undergarments and after 30 mins I am a golden goddess. The only down side--it is gone after a week. seriously. don't let people fool you into thinking it lasts longer--it doesn't. As long as i know that-i am a happy and TAN gal.
Pros: fake tanning/uv free
Cons: splotchy after a week
Staff was very pleasant and helpful. This is right around the corner from my job so its very convienient. It may be alittle pricer than expected but the place is spotless. I will definitely return.
Cons: nothing yet
Teeth whitening at a tanning salon? sounds sketch. I couldn't help but try it out though because it was seriously $150. Compared to my dentist and britesmites it was a DEAL! I got there, filled out the paperwork and was walked back to a little room with a loungy chair. I got comfy and the girl walked me through everything. She was friendly and fun and made the experience enjoyable. I admit though the room was pretty bare bones--not fancy at all. I did two 20 mins sessions and was impressed. I would say they whitened 5 or 6 shades. The downfall--my coffee addiction was put on hold for 24 hours. (WHY can't they make clear coffee...) for the price, this was fab. I def recommended it to my friends and thought it was review worthy. Cuz--let's be honest--youre doing teeth whitening at a tanning place
Pros: sweet staff, cheap, effective
Cons: no coffee for 24 hours, set-up was not fancy
So I am sitting on the couch at Portofino waiting for my machine, reading one of their many trashy mags when Hulk Hogan's daughter strolls in.--Brooke Hogan right? I know she is not some super duper celeb, but she was definitely in the US Weekly that I was literally holding. I know it's stupid, but I love seeing that they treat me just like a celeb and the service was fab for celebs and little ol me. I do love the tanning beds there... I just hope I never look as tanned as a Hogan. (PS we use the same tanning lotion. sweet.)
Pros: high end high quality without high prices
Cons: fridays are soo busy!
This place is run by two super cute girls who know their stuff. I always go in pale and leave tan and happy. Its just very zen. I hope you go there, too! You will love the girls behind the desk and learn to trust them and rely on their advice. Tanning isn't rocket science, but there is a method to the madness. I'm glad Portofino realizes that help is needed for those of us who only do this a few times a year.
Pros: Love the staff, really good beds, always have a sale
Holy cow! i thought i would be nice and give portofino a shot out and couldn't believe how many positive reviews were up here. I guess i'll still give my two cents (though it looks like they don't need it). My friend told me about the student packages they offer so I signed up for 10 tans. I think it is the cheapest I found in midtown. I assumed because I was only paying about $8/tan that I would be in a dump. (but being poor, i was willing to take it) but, i didn't have to "take" anything...THAT PLACE IS GORGEOUS!! i don't know how they make money tanning us students for so cheap, but man-i am obsessed. The girls that work there are always funny and down-to-earth. the only that i'd change is they don't give away free tanning lotions. umm that def won't stop me from bringing my friends.
Pros: awesome machines, cool employees
Cons: no free accelerators
This salon is the best! I love the tan I get from the tanning beds and I always feel like a million bucks when I leave! The packages are great and the staff is friendly. I think their customers are really pleased with their results. I know I am!
Pros: Best Tan
I like going to Portofino to get a tan after a long day at work. Its probably the most relaxing part of my day. My own escape after the office, and before I get home to my three kids. Only thing to watch - they close at 9, and you cannot shmooze them to stay open later. That's fair though, I mean.... 9 am - 9 pm seems reasonable. If you're tanning at like, 11 at night.... welll :) Good job Portofino!
Pros: 12 minutes is like 2 hours on the beach
Cons: They close at 9 - and they mean it!
First time to Portofino?? Like me, you will probably get lost. I am sure of it. Let me walk you through this. You read all the rave reviews so you assume this place is huge and people are lined up outside right? well kinda...There were a ton of people there but it is hidden on 57th st. It is up on the 4th floor, not on the ground level. Look for the Danku restaurant, it is right across from one of my fav lunch spots-Mangia. So once you get inside-this place is gorgeous. there is a painting on the ceiling in the waiting area and the rooms themselves are clean and contemporary. Though it took me forever to find, it was worth the wait. Now I feel like I am one of the lucky ones that knows this tanning secret exists.
Pros: the nicest tanning salon I've ever seen
Cons: it is sooooo hard to find
I love to go to Portofino Sun Tanning Center on my lunchbreak and get a little sun! What a nice, place with polite employees. The cleanliness of the place is great, too.
Pros: Best tanning in town!
This place may be discreet (4th floor), but I think that's a good thing! Apparently, this is where all the great looking "in" New Yorkers tan. The entire waiting room (and the girls behind the desk) were..... well, they were the way you would HOPE they would be. Nice work.
Pros: The clients and staff are just - NYCish :)
Not only was this place a nice environment to tan in due to the classy atmosphere and new equipment, but also due to the incredibly nice staff working there. I always do the beds, but am curious about the airbrush tanning. I asked the manager at the desk about the airbrushing, and not only did she explain the process in detail, but she also had me meet with the technician who actually does the spray tanning! I got all of my questions answered! Great service and the tanning (regular & spray, I'm sure!) is unbeatable.
Pros: Really nice staff
this is the nicest tanning salon I have ever been to. There is a mural on the ceiling, Pinto paintings in the halls and cheery girls who work at the desk. i can't get over how classy it is without being stuffy or too pricey. it is the perfect combo--comfortable, inviting, and fun. oh and the tanning--best in the city-hand's down.
Pros: wonderful staff
Cons: elevator is building is slow
I've shopped around and even written some reviews (under another name :) that rated the service poor at other salons. Usually, its because the tanning machines were poor, but sometimes it had more to do with the lack of cleanliness in the salon. If I am going to tan my body at your salon, you better have soap in your dispenser. Come on! Well, Portofino is a classy place with professionalism and Purell all over the place :) I give this salon a good review.
Pros: Great machines, cleanliness is key
Cons: No cons at all
Why is this place PACKED with hot girls??? I swear, I saw models coming and going. That girl from the Victoria's secret catalog was there when I got there. She was dark and I got dark too. Awesome place to go when you just wanna browse the merchandise - and get tan too.
Pros: Hotties in the salon
Portofino gave me the best tan I've ever had. I can't believe I got so brown. Luckily, they have great student rates that made it cheap enough for me to do it. Otherwise, I would have to cut tanning out of my budget. Here though, it was as much as a salad from around the corner. Good Place to get Tan!
Pros: Best color I've ever had
Cons: I'm poor :(
I've been going to Porfofino Tanning Centers for a long time now. The staff is really nice and the space is really clean. The tanning beds great and I never have to wait. Portofino Tanning is the way to go!
Pros: Brown Tan
I went to get a tan pre-vaca, and thought I was going to spend a fortune. Luckily though, Portofino offers tanning deals that bring the price way down. I got a website special of 10 tans for $99. I used their stand-up machine for 9 minutes and walked out with some good color. I'm going to go back before I go away, but I might save some of my tans for when I get back. That way, if Florida is a bust, at least I'll leave my coworkers jealous when I'm working next to them with tan skin! Hahah.
Pros: $99 for 10 tans
I like this place. The tanning is easy and not expensive. The cool thing though, is that now they can whiten your teeth too. It takes 15 - 45 minutes, and you have whiter teeth. Really easy and not that expensive. Give yourself an hour to do both. The good news is that you won't have to come back for a while because both the tan and the white teeth stay for a while. They have candy and magazines and so many other things. I recommend tanning here instead of Beach Bums or other places that are not as cool.
Pros: Really good
Both the $80 spray on tans I purchased at the Greenwich Ave. salon washed off within two days. There has to be a better way!
Pros: Nice assortment of tanning beds. Nice staff.
Cons: Terrible spray on tanning.
Wanted to shout out a quick CHEERS, giving thanks to the rock star staff at Portofino's Tanning Salon at 57th and 5th Ave. My plans were to join a new club after my package ran out. I visited a number of salons, but none came close to Portofino's hospitality. Every time I walk in for an appointment I always feel welcome and confident that their advice is right on. I gave them a call to find out what packages they were offering, because, believe it or not, I'm watching my finances a bit closer these days. They sold me on an awesome package, and I was back. Once again they blew me away! So thanks Sarah, Kristin, Tessa and everyone else out at the 57th Street location. You guys make all the difference!!!
Pros: Genuine, Helpful Staff. Knowledgeable. New and Clean Beds.
I'm not one to write reviews on these websites, but I had such a wonderful experience getting a spray tan there that I thought I would pass on the recommendation. I was a loyal airbrush client at Sundara, but was ready to find something closer to work. My co-worker recommended Valeria at Portofino. I was a little hesitant because there is nothing worse than a bad spray tan. (trust me-I have horror stories of orange streaks). I was so relieved that she took her time and was a perfectionist with my spray. She applied the barrier cream herself and explained everything thoroughly. I walked out looking instantly tan and I'm just now starting to see it fade after 5 days. I just bought one session to try it out, but I plan on getting a package of tans next time. It isn't cheap, but compared to other salons, the packs seem like a good deal. On the negative side, it took me forever to find the place. I wasn't expecting it to be on the 4th floor.
Pros: cleanliness, the precision of the airbrusher, friendly staff
Cons: hard to find
My wife and I just moved to NYC from sunny Florida and wanted a true replacement for our beloved sunshine.
We found Portofino tanning on the Internet and decided to give it a shot.
WOW - great experience and amazing service. As a matter of fact, our tan looks even better than what it looked from laying out on the beach for several hours at a time (honest!)
We highly recommend this place for people who are serious about getting a good tan in a clean place with rockstar treatment.
Pros: Cleanliness, new bulbs, fast, excellent service
Cons: May need to wait for a session if your booth is taken
I've been to the 38th street location numerous times since it is the closest salon to my office and the 76th (ish?) street location once. The 38th street staff is very hit-or-miss -- ranging from averagely and acceptably friendly to downright rude. I kick myself every time I go back to that location because nine times out of ten, I end up with someone who seems like they could care less about actually helping a customer and making a sale. My last visit, ending with a staff member dismissing a concern of mine abruptly, will surely be my last.
I was surprised to see the reviews of Portofino on here are generally high, and am wondering if its just this location ( I did see another low-star post bemoaning the 38th street staff). When I wandered into the location in the east 70s near my apartment once, they were more than helpful, friendly, and even apologetic about the wait (which was relatively short!). So maybe it is just 38th street.
The tanning, however, is great. Which is what makes it so frustrating that the staff is subpar. Oh well.
Pros: Great beds, facilities, etc.
Cons: Rude staff is just not worth it.
I went to Portofino yesterday for the first time. I hadn't been tanning in years. $35.00 seems a little steep considering there are other places who charge 15-20 but the location you can't beat. THe girl at the counter was really helpful and really nice but when she gave me the lotion - and I probably should have known this but I didn't - it cost $10.00 and she didn't say anything so ultimately I spent $45 on one tanning session. That is expensive! The tanning bed didn't seem to distribute very well either. I have a splotch on my back that is burnt and another on my belly that is bright red. Other than that I can already see a big difference in my color. I am really pale naturally. I am going to go back today to use my free tan and this time I am bring my own lotion....they will let me do that right?
Pros: Great Location
I went to Portofino because I saw that it was mentioned in the TOP 10 best places in NYC to get a sunless tan. This place is the best. The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is very high-class. The prices are incredible for as they call it "personally applied airbrush tan." It came out wonderful and all my friends were asking me where I went on vacation! I highly recommend the sunless tan at Portofino.
Pros: Great service, Great prices
Cons: Having to lie about going on Vacation
I couldn't agree less with the last review. Portofino is by far superior to all other tanning places in NYC. The beds are cutting edge (they just got a brand new bed a couple weeks ago) the staff is friendly and helpful, and the place is always incredibly clean (especially the tanning equipment) Portofino is the best. If you want a great tan in an upscale place...Portofino is for you!
Pros: Brand New Machines, VERY CLEAN!, Friendly and Helpful Staff
Cons: A little tough to find your first time there...
I went to portofino, to compare prices to the tanning salon I usually go to. the prices were just as expensive, and although the beds were different, I would not say that they were better. the lady at the desk was not polite, even after i spent 51$ for one tan. she was not helpful, and I had to make all the decisions on my own, so it was a good thing that I know my lotions and beds. The beds were good, but there were fingerprints on the beds, which was gross
Pros: various beds are available, and a small variety of lotions
Cons: rude workers, dirty beds, small bathroom, employees with no experience
I've been loyal to Valeria, the airbrusher, for 2 years now. My budget can't always afford the upkeep, but whenever I have an important event like a party or wedding, I treat myself to a spray tan at Portofino. She is wonderful! The tan usually lasts about a week and I always get compliments. Every now and then I do a booth spray, but nothing compares to the personally applied airbrush.
Pros: the AIRBRUSH!
Cons: a little pricey for single sessions
Do not use this place for spray tanning. I can't say anything about the other technicians but the girl I got was obviously inexperienced. She had trouble getting things set up with the spray bottle and now that I am home, the back sides of my legs are completely white. She totally missed them- somehow. I also made very clear to her that I didn't want to look toasted. I just wanted a bit of sun. She insisted that I needed 2 applications. So I trusted her and I probably shouldn't have because I am so so dark its kinda ridiculous.
I'm sure the beds and booths are great- just stay away from the overpriced technician spray tan.
Pros: Good beds, booths
Cons: Young & inexperienced technicians on the spray tanning
I read the reviews on Citysearch and decided to try out Portofino before heading to the Bahamas. I went in there two weeks before vacation. The girl at the desk was super friendly and helped me set-up up a series of visits with an introductory price. ($35 each time was a little too pricey for me). I did 5 or 6 visits and tried 3 different machines. I think the mattress, beachy one was my favorite. I've actually never seen a tanning bed like it before. I put a towel down and didn't have to close anything down over me. I am not into the coffin-like beds, so this was perfect. I opted to buy little packets of lotion each time instead of a bottle. That worked out just fine for me. Overall, the service was always outstanding and the tanning results great. I'll definitely be back before my next vacay.
Pros: mattress tanning bed
Cons: busy after work--I recommend making an appointment
Ok- to be honest, my first time at Portofino was very interesting. I accidentally went to the OLD location on Madison and then, after seeing the sign, I realized that my friend gave me the wrong address. So, of course I was late for my 1st appointment once I finally arrived at the right place. I was ready to apologize profusely and hope that I could still squeeze in a tan. I walked in huffing and puffing from choosing the stairs over the elevator and to my surprise the girl at the desk was wonderful. I didn't want to deal with details, I just wanted someone to tell me what to do, where to go and for how long. She did just that. In 10 minutes I was set up with a pack of sessions and taking a sweet nap in a tanning bed. All of the initial running around payed off. I've been stopping by the RIGHT salon every couple of weeks or so to take a break and get a little tan. The place is great, the people are great and the tan is GREAT.
Pros: relaxing and easy
Cons: make sure you know which midtown salon you are going to!
Yeah yeah--I am a dude and I am a fake and baker. I admit it--I have no shame. I'm not addicted or anything- i tan every now and then to keep from looking pale and sickly in the winter months. I stick to the same stand-up machine and it gets the job done. They provide eye covers, towels etc so I just show up and tan. I gotta admit the manager (the redhead) is a definite incentive too. It can be busy after work so I make an appointment ahead of time if i can. I'm not exactly a tanning connoisseur, but I know what I like. I like Portofino tanning.
Pros: good tans, good staff
I went to Portofino to get a spray tan for my birthday. I wore a slinky dress that couldn't be worn with my pale pale arms. The spray tan was a great solution. It lasted about a week and looked great and natural. The whole process took a half an hour and the girl that sprayed me was friendly. Make sure you don't wear nice clothes right after you get the tan though. It did come off a little before I took a shower. (Luckily I wore dark workout clothes so it wasn't a problem).
Pros: spray tanning
Cons: bring clothes to change into-before the shower-it can get on clothes
I visited Portofino to tan before my vacation and just loved it. I only went a couple of times, but each visit was enjoyable. The girls at the desk were so sweet and patient. They explained each bed and recommended how long I should go. I wasn't looking to spend too much money, so I bought the least expensive bottle of lotion (something corny like Dark and Sxy) and flew to the Bahamas with a nice little tan. I just returned and can report I didn't burn at all while I was there. I have already recommended this salon to my friends.
Pros: service, tanning
Cons: some of the lotions were out of my price range
My girlfriend dragged me along to Portofino to get color before our wedding. We've got months until the ceremony, but you know, she's a bride so we're doing everything early. She tans a lot, but I never do. At any rate, I just came on here to write about this tanner they have that must be meant for guys in my situation. It just tans your face. Face, neck, I hold up my hands - all the places that will show in my tux. I don't have to mess around with all the other stuff. No one's gonna see my legs ya know. I told my girlfriend, that's for her. Also, since you're only doing your face, the machine doesn't cost nearly as much as the ones that do your full body. Good machine. Good tan.
Pros: They have a machine that just tans your face
Cons: Tanning in general is just weird
3 visits - and I'm really dark!!! This place is a really good b*ng for your buck. Strong machines and tons to choose from. The beds are cool. Stands ups arent my thing, but the one they have looks like a freakin time machine. I use a 15 minute bed that gives me color even the same day. Bathroom is big and they have stuff to like, wash your face and gel your hair after you're done. I'm impressd with not only the environment when im in the bed, but the color i have during the next week.
I'm in New York for a few months, working on location, and have found my way around the city a little bit. One place I've gotten into my groove is Portofino Sun Tanning Center on 57th Street across from Mangia restaurant. I tan back home, not that much, only once a week to keep some color going, and we don't have anything quite like Portofino. This place may be a little more expensive than my spot back home (a session here is $20 - back home its probably $12 - but that's small town Iowa), but they offer plenty of perks to make up for it. One thing I thought was cool is that you don't have to pay for eyewear. Other places make you fish out 50 cents every time you tan to pay for two little stickers to put over your eyes. Its not so much the money that's annoying, its finding 2 quarters every week laying around in my coat pockets. Also, I think its wierd that you have to PAY for something that I'm pretty sure is a LAW in indoor tanning. Anyways, Portofino Sun has clean goggles in every room, or they supply you with the same stickers as Iowa, free of charge. You have towels, water coolers, mirrors , that little tube of stuff that blocks light from like, moles and scars - all of it, free of charge. The beds are really high tech too. I recommend Portofino (anyone ever in Iowa, look me up - johnsondupree@gmail)!!!
Pros: Free Eye Protection
Thank you Portofino for staying open late!!!! I have always had this system of work then workOUT - and once I'm done with those, I'm let loose in midtown where everything is closed
