I have been on the trail for the perfect doughnut of the fry cake variety and that would be the Buckman Fry Cake. Only trouble is they are out of business. For the past 2-3 years I have been on a quest for that elusive fry cake. First I sent out e-mails to all my friends for leads. I have now gone to about 25 places around 50 mile radius Rochester like Naples, Penn Yan,Hilton, Penfield, Irondequoit, Fairport, Victor. Everytime I travel I check out places Boston, we drove to Florida everytime we stopped I looked for that fry cake. My wife has even brought me doughnuts from California and other states. NO LUCK!
Let me describe the fry cake. It's not like your typical gummy inner tube type fry cake that sticks to the top of your mouth. It's a dark round ball with almost no hole in the center. It has a cruncy thick crust. The inside is kind of yellow , real tasty, not too heavy but not a light dough.
How can I get in touch with TerryLee Dembowski. I don't know if it is the Old Fashoned she is going to recreate. Where can I find that fry cake? jmonteleone@rochester.rr.com

Like many of you, I remember going to Buckmans with my Dad for ice cream and donuts. I loved their bavarian cream donuts! Their cookies and cream ice cream was pretty good, too! I remember eating it in a miniature plastic baseball helmet once when I was 7 years old. Unfortunately, those days will never be repeated. Sadly, Buckmans and one half of Buckmans Plaza was demolished recently. If you are nostalgic about Greece's downtown, please visit www.greecemallhistory.com and share your memories. Terrylee, I would like to buy a dozen old fashion donuts from you one of these days. :-)

As a former donut maker at Buckmans Dairy I was saddened to find that they had gone out of business. In the mid to late 70's I was one of those donut makers that customers would come in every morning to watch. I fondly recall Gordon Sweeting the head baker raising all kinds of h---l when we goofed up on the quality of his donuts, (one being the 'Old Fashion") I, being in my early 60's now have decided to recreate the "Old Fashion" as Gordy taught me.I think back at the times we baked and sold 1200 - 2000 dozen donuts a day without the aid of an automatic flipper or fryer. As I stated earlier I am saddened and know that there will never be a donut like Buckmans again. thanks for the memory.. Buckmans Bakery and Ice Cream moved from it's Long Pond and Ridge Rd. W. location in 2006 because of Walgreen's drug store. The land was in sold so Walgreen's could build a store. The plaza remains vacant today. What a waste! It is too bad Buckmans Bakery and Ice Cream couldn't have stayed in the location longer, maybe it would be alive and well today instead of just a memory. The news stand that was next door to it for so many years is also gone now too! It moved further west on Ridge Road and did not survive the location change. How many other little businesses were pushed out by big companies from that location? Go Walgreens!

Dear Staff:
I hope you don't mind me writing this, because I haven't had a Buckman's donut in years. My Ma used to shop at Ridgemont Plaza in the late 60's and early 70's or so and would always stop at Buckman's to pick up some donuts before she would drive back to Holley, NY. They were always good and I would recommend them today and I'll bet they are the same. I have moved out of the area over the years, but Buckman's have been around for a long time and I remember how good they were.
Thank you.

Buckmans Bakery and Dairy has been around for years now. I remember going there when I was a little girl. They have great donuts and ice cream, all made fresh. The staff is friendly and pleasant. Prices are reasonable. Parking is limited, but adequate. There is some indoor seating available.
