We had breakfast here on a weekday morning and the food was good, service was good, price was right. We had normal stuff, like eggs, toast, potatoes, coffee, etc. They had some more exotic omelettes on the menu that looked tasty, and the dinner menu looked delicious. Not too crowded either. Good find.

After visiting a friend in the neighborhood regularly for months for lunches i finally began to wonder why we never ate at this restaurant - it looks like it might be good, but after MOVING to the neighborhood and trying it out a few times it all became clear - this place just isnt an option. The waitstaff all appear to be students or part-timers more concerned with making a little money than providing pleasant service while doing it - they were impatient and a bit rude, and we were greeted with dumb stares when we walked in. After asking if we should just seat ourselves (since no-one made a move to help) we were given condescending nods implying we should have known this. We sat in the crowded room, at a table that was painfully close to another - this place is too tight and could benefit from losing a table or two - i felt as if i was having my lunch with the couple next to us, who seemed equally as annoyed with the fact. The service is the kind you'd expect at a Chili's or TGI Fridays..
As with the other times i've eaten here, the food was fine, once it arrived, nothing spectacular, but nothing amazing either. Of course everything in SOHO is a bit overpriced, but the basic dishes here arent worth it.
Part of the reason i go out to eat is for the convenience of having someone else worry about the meal - these people made me wish i had stayed at home - for all the waiting and rudeness, i could have had a more pleasurable meal if i had prepared it myself.

Cons: Very cramped, rude staff

I have never written a review before, but I now feel obliged to do so after how I was treated this morning. I went to cafe colonial at 10am on a monday morning. I was hoping to enjoy the atmosphere and have a latte while reading some articles for work. I planned to stay for no more than an hour. There were 8 customers and out of a total of 15 tables, there were 12 open tables. Within 25 minutes, I was approached by the manager and told that it was an "eating restaurant" and that I was required to eat or I should leave. I found this to be amazingly rude and inappropriate. If the cafe had been busy, I would entirely understand. But with only 8 customers and 12 open tables, it was outrageous. It's now not surprising why no one was there. I will certainly never return.

Used to drop by this place after downtown events for its cozy atmosphere and tasty dishes. Last time I went, things had definitely taken a turn for the worse: prices were up and the food was not as good as I remembered. Tonight confirmed that this place is off my list. Terrible, unbalanced food (does the chef taste what they create? A $22 entree should be at least yummy if not delightful) and average service. Too bad! I like the vibe and location but the "Brasilian" has been taken out of the food. I'll miss the pao de queso, but otherwise can skip it!!!

Cons: food (and its a restuarant, uh-oh)

I would love to know why this supposed restaurant is still in business and also why the food tastes like it has been already heated and re-heated numerous times. I don't really see myself going back considering that the service is waaaaaaaay below average and also the owner has a nasty and bitchy attitude

after a few years, returned to colonial this past weekend for dinner with a friend who is visiting from out of town. the corn as appetizer was great as was the bread pudding for dinner. however, entrees were horrendoes. our steaks were inedible. they might as well have served pieces of tires - tough, overdone, dry and completely tasteless. my wife had the chicken dish - dry and also tasteless. the experience was truly a disappointment. when i mentioned the deplorable quality of the food to one of the servers, he didnt apologize or offer any sort of compensation. we paid $120 for 3 people. never returning here ever again.

I had eaten at Cafe Colonial once before, and had a perfectly OK experience, so I came back, bringing a friend for dinner. I ate half of my steak salad and asked for the rest to be packed up for me to be taken home, so I could eat it for lunch the next day. I had a long conversation with the waitress about how my friend and I ate all the fries, which wouldn't be any good the next day, but I saved half the steak which would only taste better a day later. She took half of the meal I paid for away. Forty minutes later, having ordered a second glass of wine, my takeaway had still not arrived. I finally got the waitress's attention and asked, "Weren't you having my food boxed?" She said "yes!" and left. 15 minutes later she was back to report "I told them to pack it but they threw it away. Normally they'd make you another one, but the kitchen just closed." No apology, no offer to comp my second glass of wine (which waitresses can ALWAYS do), nothing. Basically, they stole my lunch for the next day. I don't know who ate it. I just know I won't be going back.

I've had inconsistent service experiences, but I keep going back for their bread pudding. The buttery top and the chocolate at the bottom- you'll just have to go to try it. I've never eaten their entrees, but I've heard this place is good for brunch.

WOW!!! incredible how these people are allowed to work with such a foul Manner. The Owner who I guess also works on the floor was disgusted when i asked for some more water. The brazilian omelete was not done that way I ordered and she got incredibly upset when i sent it back. My friend had told me an experience he had with the Lady Owner before i guess i shoulg have listened and not gone to Cafe Colonial.

This small eatery is definitely a local's place and the courtesy and warmth of the staff was infectious. Even though part of the food order got mixed up, it didn't seem to matter because the people were so nice and the correction was made extremely expiditiously. The food was delicious and while I wouldn't pronounce this place a destination spot, I certainly would agree to go back with anyone that needed a bite to eat before doing the shopping in Nolita.

I share the same opinion of many other reviews: the service is terrible!
The waitresses are snobbish. They treat you as they are doing a favor. Nobody ask if I need some food or drinks. If I am in a restaurant, I'm suppose to be served. You have to chase them and beg to make your order. After that, you have to wait them to clean and set up another table, before send the order in the computer. And the restaurant was not busy. There was only 2 or 3 tables occupied (Tuesday, 9:30 am). And, surprisingly, the waitress took off my plate before I finish that and, immediately (before I ask), she threw the bill on the table and, again, forgot to take the card. I had to go to the cashier to pay my bill!
There was one girl in training. She was nice and always smiling and bringing water. But I couldn't believe: the owner (I don't believe she's Brazilian) shouted at her in front of the customers, "teaching" her the water for the customers are the last priority! I cannot believe they train the staff to be like that!

Pros: The worst service in NYC

Cons: If you want to beg to be served ...

The place is the old Elizebeth Street Cafe housed in one of the oldest buildings left standing in NYC. The food was truly good. Jen had the ribs, Routh had the chicken and I had the shrimp in a coconut sauce. The grilled ears of corn are served with a lime wedge, the yucca fries are nice chunks of yucca fried to a light golden brown perfection, and the frozen pear mojoito was fresh and minty. Even the sides of fresh green kale were delicious. The place is a little noisey at 8pm on a Friday, it's a bit cramped but there are a number of great little nooks and outdoor seating as well. Great for a romantic adventure or for a small party. The service was polite, attentive, not overbearing or intrusive at all. We had a wonderful, tasty time.

What a sorry bunch of amateurs they have working in this place. It's hard to believe those people work for a tip or that they expect you to leave any with the mediocre service they provide. Is the owner of this place brazilian for real? They can fool people that don't know better. But I'm from Brazil and from the same city she claims to be. Let me tell you, they can pull "brazilian food" like that in NY, but back home I wouldn't give the food they cook to my dogs. It has to be one of the worse dinning experiences I have ever had in New York. If you value your money, don't go there.

I drag my friends to this place for a snack every chance I get. I usually just order a couple of sides, which is great for me. Very easy atmosphere, but not great if you're in a rush.

We ate here last night and thoroughly enjoyed our meal! The beef was slightly flavored with curry and was delicious as was the little 'cheese breads' appetizer. And the best flan we've ever had! The only drawback was that this Brazilian restaurant does not serve caffe con leche .. we were shocked, and even more so as the mediocre waiter, tried to tell us that a latte is the same thing as caffe con leche. ??? The busboy agreed with us, for the record .. but being that the lack of great coffee is the only drawback, I still recommend dropping in here for some great South American food!

We had dinner here and the food was absolutely fresh and wonedrfully prepared. We had the beans and rice, cheese bread, corn with lime, and the yucca fries, and everything was great. The beans and rice I highly recommend. It comes with grilled heart of palm and fresh and tender kale, roasted zucchini, squash, and sweet potatoes sauteed in a great sauce. Everything was fantastic, and the menu had so many options to choose from! Although a little out of the way, if you're in this neighborhood, grab a bite to eat here and get some gelato at ciao bella around the corner.

Small area but cheap little place. Great for first dates. Staff wasn't as bad as other reviews say...maybe I caught them on a good night. Candlelite at night....very romantic. Place looks rundown, but apparently it' "nostalgic". Check it out.

Three friends and I went on a busy Saturday for lunch. Although the service could have been more attentive, the staff was definitely friendly. I found the small restaurant cozy and cute-perfect for a weekend lunch. The food was a mix of sandwiches, salads and appetizers that were mostly healthy and had a nice Brazilian touch. It's a great place to take a small group of friends with different tastes. We all left very satisfied!

The food was mediocre, the service was abysmal. Absolutely awful. The place was not even busy, yet the staff did not even bother to ask even once how things were. It took them 50 minutes to bring an order of french toast and an omlette. There are sooo many great restaurants in this City - spend your cash at one of them and NOT Cafe Colonial.

The worst service I have ever experienced. This was the first time I actually left zero tip. It took about 45 minutes to received my eggs. I had to chase down our waitress for the food and the bill. After handing over my credit card, she forgot about me again. She acted like I requested a kidney when I politely asked to sign the check. I'm still angry that I stuck around for the full experience. I hope this place goes out of business.

Very friendly atmosphere, a great neighborhood Nolita restaurant serving wholesome somewhat-rustic food. Great place to go for an intimate, reasonably-priced meal, and tends to attract the younger, hipper 'yet' unpretentious crowds.
