To bring out the athlete in you stop by this City Sports, located right in midtowns Herald Square, near the Murray Hill area. Okay, I just sounded like a commercial. Oh no, lol... But City Sports an athletic chain store in the East Coast with only 2 stores in NY for now. They carry major brands like addidas, asics, nike, reeboks, etc. This location has two floors of men and women gear. They mainly have cycling, tennis and swimming gear. They have nice speedo swimsuits for great prices.
Their selection for children is limited.
This location is open late which is cool if you are getting out late from work and forgot to buy an extra waterbottle for the weekend trip up to the mountains. They also repair the strings of tennis rackets on location.
Don't forget to join for free their Insider Rewards program for extra deals.

These days I??m all about running, but you need the right gear, so I??ve been to all the major and minor league sporting goods stores, and so far City Sports is my all time favorite. They have great prices, super sales, and their selection of sneaks is off the hook. Needless to say I walked away with a sweet new pair of Nike running shoes, as well as some shorts and a new holder for my ipod.

And then when I got to the checkout I signed up for insider program, and I got 5% off my purchase right from the get go ?? I love that. A couple days later I went back for more, and ended up checking out their yoga gear. They had so much cool stuff that I also picked up a new mat, which was on sale - yay. I also should mention that the staff was friendly and helpful, but they didn??t follow me around while I shopped, which was another huge bonus.

City Sports has about 15 locations in major North East cities. It??s much more sophisticated than Foot Locker or other sneaker stores, and caters to every imaginable sport, from yoga to swimming to baseball, and of course, running. Unlike most sneaker stores, City Sports also carries equipment and accessories that go along with the sport (balls, mats, rackets, etc). The staff is more informed and attentive than those of other stores, many of them serious athletes themselves, who know their stuff.

They??ve also got a copious selection of outdoor/hiking/rain boots, with brands like Uggs and Northface dominating. City Sports has their own private label/house brand, CS by City Sports, considerably cheaper than name brands. I love how on the website you can sort not only by size and price, but by color or traits like ??waterproof? as well. Sizes for women run from XS to XL, again much appreciated.

Be sure to sign up for the InSider Rewards card, which enables you to get 5% back on all purchases (spend $200, get $10 to spend at the store, etc), and gets you in the loop about special discounts, coupons and events. They have a blog devoted to fitness and sports, and a Run Club, where members of all abilities actually meet up to run and hold special events (a good way to meet other singles, or make new friends in impersonal cities). You can also browse and order online on their website, and pick up goods for free at their store.

I plan on doing a lot of biking this summer--for both exercise and recreation--and my friends who are avid cyclists wouldn??t let me ride with them until I picked up all the requisite safety equipment. Makes total sense to be safe about it, but I??m not someone who is overly sporty, so a friend recommended that I go to City Sports. Man that was a good recommendation!

I didn??t need a lot; helmet, reflectors, flashers, gloves, stuff like that, and the staff was awesome at helping me find what I needed and sort out what would be good for me and what was overkill. All in all I probably spent a bit more than I wanted to, but this is an NYC sporting goods store, but the service and selection were great. I??d definitely go again if I needed something.

I was looking for my pair of air max pegasus sneakers and I found them here for in my size. I am very particular about my running sneakers so when I found these I had to get them. The staff had several pairs in the back so I was able to grab two pairs of them, which was great. Prices were very reasonable, and staff was very friendly and helpful.

I needed a new pair of running shoes and I wanted the best for my running style. The salesman was so helpful. Out of over 50 pairs of shoes, he picked 3 that would best suit me. He did not push me to buy the most expensive pair (something they do at Paragon!!), but showed me less expensive options BEFORE the top of the line. The variety of products was overwhelming, so his help was invaluable. I very highly recommend going there, especially if you are not sure what you need and don't like being bullied or intimidated by pushy salespeople.

PROS: inexpensie, knowledgable staff, great selection
CONS:

I was so impressed at the level of expertice in the tennis raquet department. I walked in there knowing nothing about tennis - wanting to buy a high-end raquet as a gift for an int/adv player. The guy who worked with me told me everthing I needed to know - explaining terms and reasonings as he went along - also telling me which players on the men's and women's teams used which raquets and strings. I felt no pressure at all to make a purchase and he literally spent about 35 min. with me and my questions. I am still so impressed with how knowledgable the staff was - even after I came home and did some research online. All in all - I have just found my new favorite sports store.

I have such trouble buying sneakers in Manahattan because sports store employees have no idea what they're talking about. And they sell me shoes that hurt my feet and aggrievate my pronating. At City Sports, however, the sales guys knew what they were doing, and even brought out four pairs of shoes that thought might do the trick. So helpful and experienced!
