I returned to the gym after a winter hiatus and found that I could no longer access the contents of my rented locker! The manager, Steve Smyer, told me that he made a clerical error in my account regarding the due date of the locker rental. My locker, along with my gym membership, was paid in full for August 2009 to July 2010. Smyer made the mistake of writing that the locker expired on July 2009 instead of 2010 so the staff had cleaned out my locker contents. On top of that, they THREW away all my items!! (Which included brand new sneakers, gym clothes, and and iPod valuing a little over $400). I am certain that the person cleaning out my locker stole my valuable items (iPod) and tossed the rest of the contents prematurely, hoping that they wouldn't not have been caught. Even more appalling is the gym's management's reaction to my situation.
They never contacted me about removing my items from my locker, even though that locker was rented to me and they had my complete contact information on file. In addition, the usual protocol is to keep the contents of cleaned out lockers at the gym's lost and found for members.
I was absolutely appalled by the incompetence of the staff at this gym. However, Smyer had calmly told me to make a list of the contents with value and they should have no problem refunding me that amount. He also said he would get back to me the following day.
The next two days, I was left with no phone call or messages, and when I called several times leaving messages, the secretary said that Smyer was "busy or unavailable". It wasn't until four days after the incident that I get, not a phone call, but a noncommital em'ail, below:
"Hello I had submitted the info. we mentioned though as I was later informed that we have a policy of refund that does not exceed 50 dollars. There is no concrete way for us to confirm what was left in the locker and value. I did get the approval to extend to you a higher value through the way of timeon your locker and membershipand/or any club services ranging from personal training tanning juice bar etc.
Let me know what you feel will work best for you.
Going back on the verbal agreement we had about the refund, he caims that he now cannot refund be exceeding 50 dollars. It's a GYM!! Of course they can refund more than fifty dollars, even just for members moving away or breaking contracts, etc. On top of that, they insulted me by saying that the value of the contents couldn't be verified. If they were really concerned about that they should've taken an inventory of the items in the locker BEFORE they throw it away as if they own everything. I am pretty certain that the gym slowly collects everyone's valuable and resellable items for their own purposes.
I am FURIOUS with the gym's management and complete neglect in dealing with my items. They made SEVERAL mistakes and completely ignored my attempts and resolving the issue. I was very nice to them at first, when they seemed reasonable and owned up to their mistakes. But after this email replay and lack of any communication with me in the past week, I have no choice but to call in a lawyer and pass this onto the local news.
I hope that this never happens to anyone. If people were to hear these kind of stories about their local gyms, it will only make people flock to the larger corporations and slowly the small local businesses will suffer more. The most important thing is customer service and resolving a mistake as quickly and reasonably as possible. Mid City gym, along with its manager Steve Smyer and the owner Vincent Consalvo are incompetent cheats. PLease spread the word it is very important in these recessionary times for people to realize that sometimes the "cheaper" alternative is not always the best one.

Mid City Gym is really one of the best gyms in NYC. I have been a member for 5 years. The staff is really helpful and my trainer Anthony is awesome! I am in the BEST shape of my life thanks to this gym and Anthony.I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. There is no attitude in this place at all! If you want a great no frills, no attitude gym, Mid City Gym is the place to be.

Staff is fun, great hours, great personal trainning. They also have delicious shakes and some amazing and healthy Protein Muffins, cookies and brownies from Granzoti... I love the atmosphere especially and I bump into Leo DiCaprio or Hulk Holgan... join us...
