The food here is delicious and fresh. My favorite thing on the menu is the shepherd's salad, which is very light and chock full of feta cheese. They have a dining room or you can go in and order things to go. Parking is pretty much non-existent here so you really have to give yourself time and not already be hungry when you go. Just let someone sit in the car and order to go!
I go to this place whenever I'm in the neighborhood. Their food is really good and plentiful. The delicious dishes are prepared in front of your very eyes and served right away! The setting is beautiful with a nice outdoor option in the summer.
PROS: Great food
This is a great place to take the whole family. It is quite large and beautiful. There is also an outside area in the back. It is usually very busy, so expect a wait . They serve delicious turkish food. The price is a little expensive, it's not for someone who is on a strict budget. They have a great assortment of food on the menu. The decor is very nice, with fish tanks and flower arrangements. I would really recommend this place, however if you are coming with a large group I sugggest you call first since it is usually very packed and crowded, especially around holidays. I drove by on mother's day and was planning on going, until I saw the line outside. Overall it's a great place.
The Gyros here are just amazing. I cant even describe. Hot and fresh all the time and whats really great is that everything is made to your preferences and right in front of you. There are alot of choices on the menu and they are all good.
PROS: food is awesome and open real late
CONS: parking in that area is not the best

The girl at the takeout who covers the afternoon was very rude to a customer in front of many people...that is bad service!
Very nice Foods. Turkish people really know what they are doing that jayro thing was way too delicious. Just Couldn's get enough of it
Nice place for a quick lunch!
the lamb was good, the chicken was good, the bread couldve been fresher. overall id say that this place was a bit overpriced for the quality, and id say there are better turkish restaraunts, but if youre in the area, its definitely a decent choice.
the sandwiched here were definitley overpriced. the side dishes werent fresh and the service was slow. overall though, the food was decent, and if i was prowling late night with the munchies id definitely hit this place up again.
this place was decent the meat was fine, not stale. nothing spectacular, but i felt that htis place was just a bit overpriced and overhyped. not a bad meal, but theres better to be had.
I was with a few people late one night, a bit before midnight and we got here just in time. the staff was very happy to serve us. they were pleasant and the food was fresh. They really treated us well. I am very excited to have a place like this in the area. Plus the food is delicious!
the poritons looked like theyd leave a san quentin inmate disapointed. ridiculous prices for less, the food was pretty good but don t get me wrong- this isnt a joint ill be revisitng any time soon.
decent food flavoring was and sesoning was great but a little on the stale side. portionas very smll considering the prices for each dish, service couldve been a little snappier.
the sahara.... used to be good but now it is way over priced with bad service and un clean conditions.... would never eat there again!!
The prices went up; the portions got smaller; and the staff were hired without any skills. Most of the waiters and waitresses are rude or simply ignore you once they take your order. By the time the bus boy tells one waiter that you are looking for your waiter and someone actucally puts into motion the exploration.....your food is cold and not very inviting. Seems if you speak the language of the server your service is spot on....kinda discrimination in my book and simply unacceptable behavior. My money is as good as anyone else....I expect the same respect and I shouldn't have to seek you out; you should be coming to my table to see if everything is alright.\r
AND, ALL OF YOU SERVERS.....STOP USING YOUR BARE HANDS TO HANDLE THE BREAD. Why are those handling food required to use gloves, but you feel it's fine to grab the bread that I will be putting in my mouth with your bare hands. And, when this was brought to one's attention, all the waiters kept looking at out table and talking about us. Sorry.....I accept, I expected too much! Go read the Health Department code and clean up your act!\r
Been coming since the min ;80s....what a shame how it's gone down hill.
Good food, service isn't so great, too slow. Rude Waiters. Hard time for valet to get the car.
My friend just told me he'll never come back again to Sahara, actually, he liked everything but service.. the server DEMANDED him to pay more tips in front of the whole restaurant! that is so low low class service, guys!! IT SHOULDN'T BE YOUR CLIENT'S CONCERN if you don't pay you servers basic. Very embarrassing and unprofessional from your side. He left 10% tips in order to be so embarrassed. very dissapointing..
Just came back from this restaurant with a horrible experience. So, I couldnt wait to share with others before they get hit by it too. \r
It was five of us talking about, while eating, that the waitress was kind of pushing us to order our food and never came back for the whole time to ask us if we needed anything else or all was okay. She was standing by the door and we had to ask someone else for our check. There was a message printed on the bottom of the check for suggested tips 10 to 15 percent. We left about 10% tips about of courtesy since we were not happy and were disappointed with the service. \r
Here is the HORRIBLE PART of the story. As we were leaving, the waitress called me from the back and stopped me and then told me that I cant leave so less tip in a loud voice. I was shocked and pretty embarrassed and immediately I asked to talk to a manager and he came over to help me. Instead of trying to find the reason as a manager and solve it, he was also telling me that the waiters and waitress work for tips. That made very upset and I explained the manager his job and how we should have been treated. I am glad he finally realized and apologized to us. \r
But the bottom line is that this restaurant is not really a place where you can eat with any expectation of hospitality. Things are dirty as well and I think specially the porch section is not healthy at all and its not fun to eat while flies are flying around. \r
Thais was my third and LAST visit to Sahara. Peace! \r
My husband's co-worker recommended this place to him and he decided to take me for dinner one night. It horrible! It was so unclean; the tables were dirty, insect was flying around. I just wanted to get out of there, but my husband's sake I stayed. The food was OK, nothing to brag about. I will never go there again.
I heart friends tell me about how this place ""use to be"" amazing etc. I just went for the first time today with my wife and I've got to say for the price, the menu was certainly worth it.
Waiters were quick, food was good, and price was fair.
Only concern would be the place itself. It seemed rather un-clean; the tables, walls, etc.
I'd go again, but only if a friend wanted to.
I lived in Brooklyn for many years & started going there when they first opened up. They had great food at a decent price.\r
They kept on expanding and the quality of the food had not faltered for years. I lived 3 blocks away and would walk there on nice days (or if with the family on cold days, drive)\r
Then over the past two years, the quality of service and quantity of the food has diminished. This review is for the last time I ate there this past April or May. First of all, the size of the portions (except for maybe the salads) has decreased in size. I was amazed at how little meat and RICE they had on the plate. The food was still okay, but much smaller portions than expected for myself and the person I was with (and I had already known (from previous visits) that the portions were smaller, but it was rediculous. There have also been a lot of other Turkish & Mideastern restaurants that have opened up in Brooklyn over the past decade that are much better than Sahara with much better service.\r
I would have complained to the waiter, but he was no where to be seen. After taking the order, he brought out the salad & appetizer, then dissapeared. Someone else brought out the entree. The busboy brought out our drinks after waiting for 10 minutes for the waiter to return. Then nonone had come around after that to offer any more drinks. Ten minutes after finishing our food (which was obvious), we asked another waiter for the check, then a few minutes later, we asked the busboy. Finally, after another 5-10 minutes, and both of us were already in our jackets the original waiter brought the check. I left him a whole 47 cents tip for the wonderful service he gave us (NOT). I knew it was not our night when we walked in there, and the person at the counter ignored us and sat the people that walked in behind us.\r
I have not been back since. Nor has any of my family and friends that all live around the area. It is a shame, I used to go there a lot, but it is not worth it any more.
In Brooklyn for 25 years,
I would recommend this place to everybody who picks great food over good food. Dieters watch out!! Portions are huge. I've been eating there a lot and never had any bad experience.
I was there yesterday the food was OK but service was awful i dont think i will go there since the service that bad there
Sahara offers good turkish food that is consistent. Great place to order in from when you are in the mood to eat in fromt of the tv. Highly recommend the baklava and the shepard salad.
If You enjoy a great ambience when dining out, and you like middle eastern/turkish cuisene...this is the place to visit. Sahara is one of my favorite late night spots to eat at and it has the very best gyros in brooklyn. the salmon kebabs are great as well. they have a garden style outdoor seating area that offers a very unique feel.
Pros: Delicious Food at Reasonable Pricing and Great Ambience
When the Turkish community first became popular in Brooklyn, this was a very good place to dine.\r
Its now one of the most horrific places to eat. The food quality has gone way down-hill. We ordered the mixed grill. The lamb chops were burned and dried out The shepherd salad wasnt even good.\r
. This establishment is now Very Bad and Very DIRTY. There were some insects crawling around the table. There was even a very large rodent in the dining room under our table...we were frightened\r
We alerted the manager on duty and they didnt even apologize. I would never go back to this place again. It progressively got worse . Now its beyond bad and very FILTHY Stay away
Insanely expensive. We spent over $70 for two people. Prices are outrageous, service is slow. You pay for lamb, yet they bring you beef. To be honest Sahara is not what it used to be. I would not recommend it.
Cons: no parking
Don't get me wrong the chicken kebab is good but not for 20.00 bucks!!! Oh you get rice with it...big deal!! If you like turkish food try another place and save money there's nothing there to justified the price nothing not even the service...!!
Pros: chicken kebab
Cons: everything else
$11.95 FOR SALAD PLUS $2.50 FOR FETA CHEESE, CRAZY PRICE\r
$22.50 FOR LAMB CHOPS, $7.95 FOR CALF LIVER ONLY A FEW PEACES\r
THIS RESTAURANT DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME ZEST LIKE BEFORE \r
I ORDER LAMB AND GOT BEEF, WHEN I ASKED WHY I GOT BEEF, THE WAITRESS SAID THAT 'S THE WAYS IT IS. WE USED TO LOVE THIS PLACE, BUT LIKE EVERY OTHER RESTAURANT SAHARA IS WAY OVERPRIZED AND FOOD IS NOT THE SAME QUALITY.
If you are into the delights of Turkish cuisine, which is almost everything Eastern Mediterrenean and MiddleEast, Sahara is far better than any Turkish restaurant in Manhattan. No, it is not a fancy place for romantic first date, but it has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, and very child friendly. The food...oh, the food.. fresh, delicious and deservingly priced. Sahara is for those who enjoy eating and responses to a wide range of preferences..
Ok, yes its is far out in the middle of brooklyn, yes the wiaters can be hot or cold, but this place knows what its doing. Iv been going to this restaurant since I was a kid and have been more times than I could eer remeber and they have never provided me with a bad meal or for that matter anything less than the bets tatsing kebabs, shepherds salad with feta, lentil soups, yogurt and hot sauces, spinach pies, baklavas, and freshly made out fo the oven bread I ahve ever had outside of the meditteranean istelf. I never complain bout a $25 mixed grill or something ebcause their portions, quick service, andtaste are worth it.
Pros: great food, valet parking, large space
Cons: loud, not good for dates
$19.95 for a medium-sized plate of so-so hot appetizers? (this price is not a typo)
$12.95 for ok-tasting chicken shish kebab with rice as the only accompaniment?
$21.95 for 8 admittedly very good tasting shrimp on a kebab?
$2.00 for a can of soda?
$4.50 for a piece of baklava maybe 2x2 inches?
Please, these are Manhattan prices of a very tacky Brooklyn location! If the food was outstanding, perhaps these prices could be justified. But the only thing that was above-average were the shrimp.
Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere!
Pros: food was fresh
Cons: overpriced!!!, overpriced!!!, bland-tasting
Great middle eastern food in Brooklyn. Must try appetizers are the shepherd salad w/feta, the lebne (yogurt w/walnuts and garlic) and the salmon in grape leaves. The homemade bread served at every table will bring you back each time. The fried calamari is done well in a very light batter with a creamy dip sauce. Their whole fresh fish or fish kebabs are all grilled to perfection. The chicken kebab is great and usually better than the lamb, but the lamb and pork chops are amazing. The yogurt kebabs are very special - chicken or lamb kebabs served on top of a pool of yogurt and lightly fried pita chips. The combination is incredible! In warmer weather, the back is open and is a nicer atmosphere than the too bright interior. But the custom printed tables, dishes, and water pitchers are almost worth the trip alone!
Pros: great grill, large space - no line, good for groups
Cons: service is eh, interior is weird
I had lamb kabob, but it was very dry and tough. I tried my friend's chicken and it was very tender and yummy. Perhaps next time I will get the chicken. The feta cheese wrapped in filo dough and deep fried is a MUST TRY appetizer. Baklava was soo sweet and soggy.
This place serves food good, fast and cheap. I have eaten at Sahara many times and the food is solid. Yes it is far out in Brooklyn, but it's worth the drive
The food is fabulous, the prices extremely reasonable. Drive or ride out to our Brooklyn hinterlands and you'll understand value. Share everything. Take home a doggie bag. And your kids will love the fish tanks. In summer, sit in the garden. You'll love it.
Pros: the food!, the food!, price
Sahara serves up some the best Mideastern food around. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering how large portions can be. I can't wait for the summer, so I can try out the outdoor seating on the patio! I just wish this place were closer to me so I could go here more often.
Pros: great food, reasonably priced, large seating area
Cons: far out in Bklyn
Sahara is a wonderful place! The food is fresh, the waitstaff helpful. It can get very crowded on weekend nights. The best time to go (in my opinion) is for lunch on a weekday. They have several dining areas to choose from, including a smoking room. Upstairs is not the place to be, however, as it is very drab (a throwback to the 70's) and food takes longer to get to you, since it comes from downstairs. Portions are large, and some notable selections are the potato salad, shepherds salad with feta (not the usual greek feta, rather, a creamy turkish one). All grilled items are great as well!
Pros: Smoking room, Lots of seating, fresh food
Cons: noisy on weekends
Foos is great, served extremely hot and fresh. Appetizer is good, but slightly overpriced. We had three waiters, which made things very confusing, as service went from highly inattentive to overly attentive. We were there 11pm at night on a Saturday, and there was a lot of room in the back room, yet the Maitre D sat an obnoxious family with two very loud and misbehaving pre-teen children right behind our table, destroying the romantic potential. Children run screaming up and down the aisle from other parts of the restaurant, which was a huge turnoff, particularly when we went out so late to eat to escape the abrasive restaurant ""family"" crowd and to have a romantic evening. We found $30 for two people that included an appetizer, 2 sodas, and 2 entrees to be extremely reasonable, although they completely sold out of chicken and we had to reorder our meal.
Pros: great food, friendly waitstaff
Cons: abrasive atmosphere, sold out of entrees, service satisfactory
