Shiki Sushi's got nothing to really distinguish it from other cheap East Village sushi places where the fish is affordable and of middling quality like May's Sushi Park. But the difference between Shiki and other sushi places is that Shiki wait staff will committ FRAUD with your credit card. I ate a 41 dollar meal at this place, put it on my debit card, and left a cash tip. The meal showed up on my bank statement a few hours later as 52 dollars. I called Shiki and they swore up and down that it was the bank's fault. When I went in there the next day to pick up my receipt to talk to the bank about the false charge on my card, the staff swore up and down that it was "the bank's fault; we don't know why this happens all the time." Buyer seriously beware.

Cons: fraud, bitchy waitress

NYC has a lot of Japanese restaurants, and it was very hard for me to find a good sushi restaurant (i.e the quality of the fish, the prices, and the dedication of the chef when he makes the sushi) Me and my boyfriend were walking around and we stopped by Shiki's, I was somewhat intimidated but since my bf wanted sushi, I thought hey why not try. When I looked at the menu, I saw Brazilian Rolls, and I thought, o dear, this place better not be mediocre. Boy I was wrong.
This roll that had fried banana, mango, and avocado, now I had to try this because those are my favorite foods. There was this big avocado chunk in the roll which I was happy about (since some restuarants would be cheap about the avocado) The roll was amazing! We also ordered the sushi/sashimi combo, amazing. It was fresh and it was good enough for two.
Chef Shiki is such a nice person. Another cool thing is he knew spanish! My bf sometimes gets intimidate since he doesn't know Japanese, but once Chef Shiki spoke spanish fluently, that just made my bf happy. lol Which was good since it was his birthday also. I would def go back. The prices are also decent, not expensive at all.
Chef Shiki, thank you for having me and my boyfriend have a good time last night. The food was excellent, got it fast, great atmosphere. Thank you!

Pros: The Brazilian Roll, The Chef's personality

Cons: nothing

Gracious staff. Fun origami decor. I didn't have sushi when in Brasil and this venue makes me wish I had. The Samba roll (Eel, Avocado, Mango, Salmon, Shrimp Tempura) is habit forming. My fave local spot for a sushi dinner.

Pros: Fish is Fresh and Generously Portioned, Fun Origami Art, Supernice Staff

Cons: Origami dubya holding a bomb and grinning too realistically gruesome

Shiki's offers an excellent mix of traditional sushi and Japanese food with some of his experimental Brazilian-inspired rolls. Service is fast and friendly and the prices are unbeleivable. The place is covered floor to ceiling with owner's paper cutting artwork, which gives the place a very "homey" feel.

Shiki's the place to be... great sushi... very friendly staff, and even more friendly owner! The best value for sushi in NYC. Shiki's got Brazilian themes mixed in with Japanese... his art work is definitely a conversation starter. You'll love this cozy den.

the owners are incredibly friendly and nice and the restaurant is decorated with this great art. the owner is also an artist so there are cool funky drawings and masks and things decorating the place. the sushi is reasonably priced as well. it's small and cool. not romantic though but a great place to have dinner with a friend.
