Stopped in one Sunday morning because their brunch menu looked pretty extensive and had cheap cocktails. The food was excellent (the potatoes are AMAZING!) and the staff is courteous and attentive. I have gone back several times and never had a negative experience. I sent friends there (including a group of out-of-towners in town for a bachelorette party weekend. -- note: their group of ~20 people ALL loved it).
YUM.

Pros: price, location, variety

Space is tight at this busy upper east sider, especially on a warm Saturday evening in Spring. But a reservation will get you a nice table by the open window of the enclosed sidewalk cafe.

The menu, as the name suggests, mixes French bistro fare with some steakhouse classics and offers a nice variety from which to choose. We started with the warm goat cheese tart served with roasted tomatoes on top and drizzled with olive oil. Rich and delicious. For slightly lighter fare, the beet & goat cheese salad was perfectly dressed and seasoned. It was a special that we were told makes a frequent appearance and which we'd happily have again. For entrees, we tried the New Zealand lamb served with mashed potatoes. Tasty but average and the sauce didn't add to the dish. The filet au poivre with pommes frites, however, was exceptional. Perfectly cooked meat, luscious creamy peppercorn sauce and hot crispy shoe string fries. A bit rich after the goat cheese tart...but worth it. Dessert, unfortunately, disappointed. The valrhona flourless chocolate cake sounded too tempting to pass up but what arrived, though generous, was dry and difficult to eat.

Service was fast, friendly and efficient and dessert notwithstanding, we'd go back for that steak.

We went late on a Tuesday night, after the main dinner rush. I opted for sea scallops with a mushroom ragout, which was genuinely excellent - it's hard to get a decent scallop, but these were perfect, with the ragout making a wonderful accompaniment. This is high praise, as I am not a mushroom fan. My husband had the 10oz steak with frites, plus the house steak sauce. The meat was not heavily-seasoned, but it was certainly tender, of good quality, and cooked exactly as requested. The steak sauce was fabulous. Perhaps a little too fabulous. I laughed until I cried when our wonderfully quirky waitress deliberately positioned the ketchup as far away from us as possible (curling her lip when mentioning its unfortunate presence at table), with the steak sauce pushed right against my husband's plate and patted (yes, patted!) for good measure - but we were very glad that we took the monster hint and tried it. We were seduced into dessert and the inevitable, yet fresh and well-made, espresso - the flourless chocolate torte was really good, while the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake was a great concept, but possibly a little too sweet. Quality service, though sometimes the staff were a little too attentive - and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere prevailed overall. We'll certainly be going back for seconds.

This place is a great find,,,,the atmosphere is cozy and very "bistro-y".....I like it, very neighborhood.....
The House Salad is so simple and always great....THe steaks are delicious...cooked to perfection with a very special house steak sauce.....I think the value, epecially for Steak is very much appreciated.
The fish dishes are also very good, and the wine suggestions are right on!!!!

We've been here a few times and have been consistently disappointed. French steak is usually so much more flavorful than this. In addition, I've had to send it back a few times because it was OVERcooked. I like my meat a la Francaise, ie black and blue, and they just don't seem to get it. Worse, the actual quality of the meat is not that good. And they're supposed to be a French place????
Wine list is generally OK, it's kind of hard to find something not from an off-vintage or a lower-level producer.
Service is OK, not great.
There are so many better French places (Bandol, Orsay, Payard, Brasserie Julien...) in the neighborhood, why waste my money and time here?

Pros: Outdoor terrace, frites are good

Cons: Crowded, poor quality meat, can't seem to get meat cooked right

Live nearby in the neighborhood so stopped by for dinner on a Tuesday night around 8. My friend and I were the only diners under the 50-70 age range. Food was ok, but nothing to write home about. My fish was dry and not very flavorful, and my friends steak was juicy, but a little burned on the outside. Ambience on the covered outer deck was colorless and boring and I was generally disappointed with the place. Orsay one block over is a better option for French fare in the neighborhood.

Bistro Le Steak is a great neighborhood restaurant and the food is good too. I had Steak Frites and the roquefort salad and both were really good. I also had a martini and it was nice as well. The atmosphere is cute - just like a french bistro and the service was great. There was no attitude at all either. Now, I have had better steaks, but this is convenient and not hard to get in to. This is great for a low key night and I will definitely go back. Prices good too.

It is true that bistro le steak is not the most amazing steakhouse I have ever gone to but it is a wonderful place in my neighborhood that I enjoy going to for spontaneously special occasions and anytime I want a reliably good piece of meat (the filet mignon is great) in a classy but not stuffy atmosphere. Try the crab cakes as well.

Very classy and delicious. Cold by the windows. Bartender annoying and over friendly.

This place is great!!! The food is the best in the city. The steaks are the best I've ever eaten. The House Special: New York Cut Sirloin is the juiciest steak I've ever eaten. The Shrimp St. Tropez is one of the best dishes in the place in New York. The service is great also. The waiters & waitresses are very helpful, very friendly and quick on service. The overall ambience is great. It's a little noisy but thats what you get when you put a French bistro in the Upper East Side. The management is more than friendly and the chef is one of the best cooks in N.Y. The value is more than fair. This is definitely an ideal French bistro.

Used to be good. Last 2 times I ate there the steak was almost well done even though I asked for it medium rare. Tables are much too close together but this is New York. Service is average at best.
