One of the worst places I'd ever been to in New York, hands down, but not because of the restaurant itself. For some reason this cute little place in Alphabet City (right across the street from a hipster wine shop and next to a little hippie garden called La Plaza Cultural) attracts Jersey Shore types. My friend and I were the only non-orange-skinned people in there. An otherwise lovely brunch with unlimited mimosas and bloody mary's ruined by the worst kind of conversations, which we heard loud and clear due to the proximity of the tables to each other.

I give three stars, though, for the excellent service, the decor, and the food. My friend and I showed up around noon on a Sunday, and there were crowds of people outside on the sidewalk and inside at the bar area. We thought the wait would be incredibly long, but we were seated within ten minutes. We asked for a table out in sun in the enclosed outdoor back area and was told that they were all full, but the host came back to get us after we were seated when a table outside opened up. I really appreciated the gesture because one, there were other people waiting for tables, and, two, it was hard for anyone to maneuver around anywhere and the host didn't have to go to the trouble of moving us. Throughout our entire stay all the waiters were available to refill our drinks, and all of them were helpful and courteous despite the number of orders and customers and demands. I was very impressed.

The decor is hip and cute - we were drawn to it in the first place because of the name itself ("sunburnt cow" = adorable). There was a live DJ spinning 80s hits, creating a nice, intimate atmosphere. Too bad the intimacy was rather overwhelming...The back area is made to look like a cave; I loved the fact that there was a tiny lamp nestled into a crevice in the "cave wall" right behind my seat. The food was pretty good - my friend and I both got eggs benedict with salmon and avocado. There are limited choices for brunch, but they all looked great. No vegan or strictly vegetarian options, though. The check comes with lemon drops! I do have to say that our bloody mary's had very little alcohol. Then again...being unlimited...

Great restaurant in and of itself, but factor in the clientele...I will not be going back there.

This is the best brunch experience I've had in NYC to date. I had a burger with a slice of beet and pinapple and it was out of this world. I was with 5 people and everyone agreed that the brunch was out of this world. Now I have to try

Totally over-hyped. It leaves you confused and wondering if you are experiencing a wild party from the prior night, or if you just have a really bad hangover. It's a great place to go if you want to drink during the day, in the pitch

Went here with a large group recently for brunch, and was unimpressed. The unlimited drinks brunch seemed to be a big draw for the other customers, but since I couldn't drink for health reasons, I wasn't able to take advantage. They don't have much of a selection in non-alcholic drinks - actually, all they have is cocktails and mixers like juice and soda. They don't have coffee either.
The food was pretty mediocre, kind of overpriced for the quality. I was seated under a leaky skylight which dripped on us the whole time, and the kitchen and dining area looked pretty dirty.
The waitress was really great, but I wouldn't go back to this place. I might have liked it better when I was younger, but I prefer more grown up restaurants now.

Pros: brunch with unlimited drinks. Friendly accommadating service

Cons: loud, dingy atmospher, no coffee, below average food.

I am sort of in love with this place. Hands down my favorite place to go for a fun brunch! The food is pretty good, but you can not beat the unlimited mimosa brunch. I have also been for dinner and they have a $16 3 course deal. I was not a fan of the shrimp appetizer, but my barramundi entree was great and the burgers here are really tasty. The atmosphere of this restaurant is super fun and is a great choice for a group dinner or just a good deal!

Granted, my boyfriend and I were only one of 3 tables seated that quiet dinner night, but the food was absolutely delicious....we did the fixed priced 3-course dinner, and by god...our burger was REALLY something special!! If you're really seeking a truly different flavor between your buns, the one they serve here is absolute HEAVEN! Granted, I felt like I'd just consumed enough greasy calories for the rest of the week when I was done, but considering the fact that I was looking for exactly that --a deliciously unique and totally gratifying meal-- well, i wouldn't go back and change a thing.

I will also disagree with anyone's complaints about the service...if it sucked for you once, then give it another try, because our server was as kind and helpful as could be. So aside from the yummy entree, excellent service, and even more excellent dinner price, I save the best for last:

YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY TRY THE DATE PUDDING DESSERT!!!! It is hands down ONE OF THE BEST DESSERTS to have ever touched my lips!!!!! Yes, i have a sweet tooth and have probably tried almost everything there is to offer in your typical dessert fare menu, but this one had me dreaming about it the next day. PLEASE PLEASE don't miss out on this thing, even if it's the only piece of food you order from the SB Cow, period!!!!

The fellow/gal who wrote "No fun allowed at Sunburnt Cow 03/17/2008 Posted by mcgintax" just doesn't get it. One of the reasons that this place is so great is that they don't allow drunken people having what they may term "fun" into the place in order not to spoil the dining experiences of others. Maybe it's just me, as an Australian living in NYC for many years, but we Aussies generally don't stand for loud, obnoxious, intoxicated people. I have been to the Cow numerous times, and it's always been fantastic. The biggest complaint I could make is that my side salad one night was a bit limp. Big deal. The service is always wonderful and everyone who I have taken there has adored it.

PS: "mcgintax" sounds like he is a good pal of the owner of Esperanto - "a wonderful brunch at Esperanto (Sunday jazz brunch at Esperanto is HIGHLY recommended!) After our brunch (which included a few mimosas, because what NYC brunch doesn't)"

Well, let's forget his/her very poor punctuation/sentence structure skills and just leave it at that.

The Sunburnt Cow is a genuine find. Enjoy.i

Cons: Can get crowded

I go to The Cow at least once a month and there's nothing more relaxing and enjoyable on a Sunday afternoon. The food is great and everything is really cheap. The drinks are non-stop and not watered down as you would expect from an "all you can drink" brunch. Kimiko, the DJ, tops the experience off playing everything you could want to hear, even if you didn't know you wanted to hear it.

I had two friends visiting from Spain this weekend, and we started off our Sunday with a wonderful brunch at Esperanto (Sunday jazz brunch at Esperanto is HIGHLY recommended!) After our brunch (which included a few mimosas, because what NYC brunch doesn't) we walked over to Sunburnt Cow. We were admittedly being a little silly and having a LOT of fun with our visiting friends, while waiting for a bartender to take a drink order. After waiting some time without any service, the bartender approached me and told me his manager said we were too drunk, and "would we like some water?" Seriously???! Not once in my life have I not been served for being too drunk, that is so not my style, so its quite insulting when someone calls you drunk at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon, after brunch! I thought he was kidding, but he wasn't. Apparently no fun is allowed at Sunburnt Cow, who wants to hang out there?!

My friends and I love exploring new brunch places throughout the city, and our latest stop along the tour was the Sunburnt Cow, and we were not disappointed at all! For just $15 we got a decent and satisfying brunch and all we could drink. They make a great Bloody Marry! The menu is limited but the wait staff w/ their cute accents def make up for it (i.e. Nathan)! You will definitely have to wait on a Sunday, but I assure you it's well worth it. They also have a great DJ who plays everything you want to hear but nothing you would put on your i-pod (trust me it makes sense when you go). I can't wait to go to this spot up on a week night and check out the scene! If you looking for a hip, fun, and cheap brunch definitely check out the SB COW...I mean it's the cheaper than going down under!

Cons: Limited Menu Selection

The venue is sm all and limited, yet the dive-y atmostphere is comfortable. Good, funky music. I would've really liked this place, except for the bouncer who was horribly rude and spoke very disrespectfully to women in the bar once he was drunk. As a woman, I would not go back there again.

I love this place. I came with my best friend and had so much fun... Its only $15 for a meal and unlimited mimosas, and they are by far the most generous with the "unlimited" than any other place I've been to. The waitress makes sure your glass is always full and does not rush you at all. The food was very good too. Wait can be very long but it is soooo worth it!

About a year and a half ago is when my boyfriend and I heard about this place- and we went all the time because the food was amazing (shrimp on the barbie was FANTASTIC!) We even go to Bondi Road-- we are huge fans of the owner's places-- it has been a few months since my last time at the cow (and that time was mediocre with friends when drinks were spilled all over us - but the owner Heath is a great guy and went out of his way to make it up to us. )

After constantly talking about this place to my friends, I brought them back last week and boy were we in for a shock! The menu had changed quite a bit (prices almost doubled on certain things) and the best dishes were gone (shrimp on the barbie & the boar ribs).

When I asked if the chef could make the shrimp that I loved so much he flatly replied NO. He talked us into getting the three course $16 dinner. The appetizers were great but the beer battered fish & chips tasted bland.

The WORST part was when we were ready to order dessert, the waiter told us the kitchen had CLOSED. what? You talked us into ordering dessert and then tell us the kitchen has closed for the night?

Heath, if you are reading this - please bring back some of the "old favorites" like the ones listed above - I really wanted to surprise my friends after telling so many people to try it, but they felt the food was below average and the server slightly rude. And we never got our dessert...

I really want to come back again but the last two times were, quite frankky, not worth the trip down there. I hope to find myself wanting to go back one day but this past trip left a bad taste in my mouth!

My friends took me out to Bondi Road and Sunburnt Cow this past wknd. The food at both locations were great!!!! A great place to eat out with a small group of friends. The owner recognized us from the previous evening and welcomed us with open arms when we went to Cunburnt Cow for brunch. I would definitely go back to both places again when I visit NYC.

I had only gone to Sunburnt Cow once and I'm planning to return again! The wait was kinda long (we got there around 2 pm and didn't get seated until 3) but it was worth the wait! The brunch menu was excellent (I got Queen Adelaide- poached eggs with salmon and served with fries and salad.. yumm!) and the best part is for $15 you also get unlimited drinks! (bloody marys or mimosas). The place was nice and airy and the staff were excellent!

The brunch is definitely a great deal. I ate there for the first time this week and sat out back. The tables are very close together, but such is life in the East Village. The food was good, and they were great about refilling the drinks. We got there a little before 1:00 and didn't have to wait for a table but by the time we were leaving there was a line out the door, so it seems like the earlier the better if you don't want to wait. I'll definitely be going back.

An Australian restaurant in America that is not called the Outback is a rare thing to find. So, the best quality about this place is that it is different simply because of the lack of similar restaurants. The staff is friendly and attentive and you can get real Australian beers there (Coopers, etc.). The food isn't bad but it is a bit weird - you can order things like kangaroo sausages and buffalo ribs. The hamburger has beets on it - which supposedly is how people in Australia eat their hamburgers. The biggest drawback to this place is that it is in Alphabet City, which can be a pain to get to. But if you are in the mood for a dining adventure, and you have some attachment to Australia - then get in a cab and give this place a try.

The Sunburnt Cow has become a steady favorite for my friends and I (Been going consistently for about 3 years so I write this with extensive research). Heathe and the whole staff present a warm welcoming environment and the food is in a word - SENSATIONAL. I have been to the Cow for brunch, dinner and saturday nights for drinks. You never know what to expect as far as vibe, but you can always expect a great time, fabulous cocktails and cheap and delcious food. I am shocked that this place has received any negative ads - but whatever, I guess you can't please everyone. Keep doing what you're doing - love the saturday night party - Awesome music with live bongos?!?! The brunch? Bring an empty stomach and a good attitude, might have to wait a bit but your glass is always filled with your faves (mimosas, bloody marys, fosters) Well worth any wait!

This place is off the hook! Not many places you'll find that entertain as well as the Sunburnt Cow. The host is crazy!...running around, singing and screaming. He really put on a show! Aussie staff were super friendly.
Unlimited brunch menu was great. After our meal (and many pints of beer later) the crazy host moved us to the bar where we continued our "unlimited " drinks. Thought that was very generous! Crazy Time! Highly recommended!

I went to the Sun Burnt Cow for brunch today, Sunday, February 25th, 2007 and was asked to wait 20 minutes for a table. I didn't mind waiting, however, while I was waiting, the host knocked over a tray of cutlery and proceded to scream and yell at me to "Get out, it's your fault!" I will make one thing very clear: I was no where near the tray in question. The guy was very abrasive and made all the surrounding guests feel awkward. Honestly, I was incensed but continued to wait with my friends for a table. Our brunch was fine until we were asked to leave after 45 minutes in order to seat other guests. We were there for UNLIMITED drinks but we were ripped off! Overall, a very disappointing and embarassing experience for all. You will find much better across the street at Esperanto for less!

g'day, my name is heathe and i'm the owner of the sunburnt cow. i don't normally do this, but after reading the last members review and feeling a little misrepresented, i had to say something. first of all to iko, i'm sorry that on both visits to the cow we let you down. in the three years we have been open all of us have committed ourselves to offering a genuinely friendly, happy atmosphere with good food, cheep booze and great service.
we take this very seriously.
we are a busy place most of the time, so some times you have to wait for a table, some times drinks and food take a little longer than we hope for and sometimes we make mistakes. but i can guarantee we are not lounging around drinking or eating while neglecting our customers and friends. when we're busy we want you to hang out and have a great time, but we also want your table back so we can seat someone else.
we recently opened a new restaurant called bondi road, and is my only excuse to anyone out there who didn't get the service they deserve at the cow. in the rush of the opening and the success of bondi road, we may have slipped a little. stretched thin!!
going out in manhattan is one of the pleasures of the city and as such should always be a pleasure. as the owner i am always available, if we slip let me know, i'm sure we can make it right.
cheers

As a person born and raised in Australia, I found the "Aussie" themed menu inaccurate. Only the lamington & pavlova deserts, and their burger with "the lot" could be considered Aussie fare. The burger was greasy, flavorless, and nothing special at all. The pavlova was CHEWY, an absolute crime. An authentic pavlova should be light and fluffy, with a delicate meringue outside.

The first time I gave this place a shot I waited for 1.5 hours on a Friday night, well over how long I wanted to wait. Our waitress was completely inattentive, and at one point she was laying on a seat drinking alcohol and chatting with people for about 10 minutes, while we were desperately trying to flag her down for more water and our check for about the 5th time. I left feeling completely jipped, and couldn't believe I fell for such a sub par tourist trap.

Saturday I was coerced into going back to try the brunch with some friends. I was given the VERY limited brunch menu, and I immediately had second thoughts. We waited for 30 minutes for our order to be taken, and were not asked if we needed more drinks at all during that time. At one point I was so angry I actually considered pouring myself more coffee. Our party?s food arrived, sans mine. I saw it sitting on the kitchen counter, but was unable to get any wait staff attention for another 10 minutes. All three waiters were about 3 feet from me hanging out at the bar and chatting, with backs turned. Two of them were EATING while I was sitting there watching my food get cold. Our waiter then walked past us about three times and almost gave my benedict to another table (that were seated after us). The bacon on the benedict was burnt, the hollandaise tasted like melted butter, w/o the lemony tang. My tiny salad was wilted under a pile of fries. We waited another 30 minutes to get our check.

With so many wonderful restaurants in the east village, do yourself a favor and avoid this terrible tourist trap!

We had the Sunburnt Cow cater our Friday lunch at work and they did a perfect job. They helped to create a menu that suited our budget beforehand. The food was delicious, the set-up was very tasteful, and they even created menus with our logo without even asking! The salads were put together right there on the spot, and the desserts too, so everything tasted fresh. Our expectations were exceeded and the event went off very well. Highly recommended.

I adore this place...namely the backroom. totally cute and cozy. Can hang out, chat and drink and go inside for great music and dancing. Always our go- to when we are at a loss for where to go.

Loved this place. Went with a bunch of co-workers for a birthday--little did I know they were regulars and had been holding out on me! Great staff, very friendly and personable. The set-up was comfortable and cozy, and for $5 Monday night, who could complain? Nearly everything (food and drinks) was five dollars. I think our table ordered the entire menu and everything was great. Even the people in the place were friendly and social. Before leaving I already made plans to go back. I suggest trying the shrimp on the barbie and definitely going for the fig pudding! Great stuff!

Stumbled upon this place while wandering around the lower east side. Absolutely loved it. The drinks are terrific as well as the vibe and where else can you get a drink in a baby bottle?

Whenever my friends and I got to the Cow, one thing is for sure -- we will be there all night long, and have a fantastic night of eating, drinking and partying. There have been times where we thought we would *start* at the Cow and go elsewhere... this has never happened. It is simply too fun to leave once we are at the Cow. I have had my bachelorette party there, too, as I married an Australian -- and the people at the Cow could not have been more accommodating. The drinks are great, the vibe rocks, and the food is delicious. And the staff is laidback, fun, and just plain awesome. One of the best places in the city to go for a casual night out.

It's small but it's pretty cool. You've gotta check out the little outdoor-ish patio in the back too! Love the Aussies.

Our first time to the Sunburnt Cow was less than stellar. We were a large party and it was a busy night. However, the owner called us and asked that we give them another chance. We understood that even the best places have "off" nights. It was highly commendable that the owner called us. Anyways, we went back and the food and service was superb. Favorite dishes were the shrimp and bessie (you have to read about it). It lives up to all the rave reviews. I highly recommend it if you're looking for great food with a casual atmosphere.

After lookin around for a place to have my 30th birthday, I decided on The Sunburnt Cow. I had been in for drinks before, gotta love the moo juice, and decided I would have dinner and stay and party. There were twelve of us and we got a 5 course family style tasting menu, we were so stuffed we didn't even want the dessert. Food was so good. Our waitress showed up twice with moo shots, so yummie. It was a friday night, the DJ was awesome and they had a digeridoo, who knows how to spell that, player, and a drummer. Was such an easy night. If you want to have fun, this is the place.

I have been here a few times on a Saturday afternoon for brunch and I have to say it is great! Aside from the fact that you get unlimited drinks the food is awesome and the french fries are the best I've ever had. Both times I had the same two waiters and they are always pleasent and helpful. I got refill's on my drink without even having to ask. If your a brunch person you must check this place out.

In a city filled with abundant restaurant choices, sometimes places become run of the mill, offering the same boring food choices and modern decor. The Sunburnt Cow is a happy departure from all that. The low priced Australian food is outstanding for your stomach and wallet. Things to try are Bessie Sandwich, the soups, and the sticky date pudding and pavlova are to die for. Staff is overtly friendly and un-New Yorkish. Overall, an interesting venture into different comfort food- a must try.

We had dinner here, and they don't take reservations for groups under 6 so it was annoying waiting for a table for 40 minutes. But it got better soon after. The drinks were really good- albeit a bit weird served out of baby bottles. Once we were seated, we were right in front of the DJ booth and conversation became impossible. Also although dim lighting is always a plus- this place was too dark- we could barely see our food.

Speaking of food, the food was amazing. I dream of their ribs. The staff was attentive and helpful in making suggestions. Their portions are tiny- so figure 2-3 per person.

So much fun! Went on a Thursday night, sat outside - atmosphere was great, lots of people, great drinks. Went back on a Sunday and the place was pretty dead but I was with a group and there were drink specials, so it was nice having the patio all to ourselves. If you haven't been you should go, there are lots of other places nearby to check out as well.

EAT CLUB REVIEW: The Sunburnt Cow 6/25/05. 100% of those attending liked the food, "delectable, distinct, and sublime," and "best calamari in NYC" with "beautiful presentation." The service was "friendly" and "exceptional" and the atmosphere was also great. "I have never been this close to a kangaroo before." A couple of us thought it was a bit on the pricey side, considering the location. One person noted, "the DJ seems to tailor his music choices to the amount of grey in the customers' hair." Overall rating: very good. The only minus besides the price was a complaint about the "lack of air conditioning early in the evening." (EAT CLUB is a loose association of New York City food lovers.)

This place was one of the few NY "finds" I've encountered. You get so much more than your money's worth on Sunday Brunch. For $15 you get unlimited mimosas or beer (we got bloody marys that were INCREDIBLE, like a meal in a drink, that they let us include in the brunch price), staff that is beyond friendly (this is the second time I was there and both times they came over with random drinks for us to try. Last time was Passion Fruit Infused Tequila), food that is amazing (I would have never put beets on a burger but it was INSANE), drinks that are unique (and don't cost your utility bill) and a pumping DJ that kept the place lively. A "Must" for anyone looking to gossip with their friends on Sundays after a crazy weekend!

The decor of the unique dining area reminds me of nowhere else in NY. I feel taken away every time I come to the Sunburnt Cow. The first time I came was on Valentines day with my girlfriend. We shared the couple's tasting menu, and were in love with the place ever since. We've gone out of our way to come back often as the food is consistantly better each time. On most nights the DJ spins funky music, while plate after plate of exotic food flows out of the kitchen. The Bessie Sticks are excelent, along with the Baramundi and the Boar. If you come with a big party, order one of everything and share, its all good. Also, you MUST try the "Sunburnt" - best drink on earth! Carefull though... the food might not be very expensive, but those drinks add up fast!

What a find. This place has a funky outback rustic charm. Went a couple of nights ago and it has an austrailan tapas menu wich is perfect for this type of restaurant. Everything on the munu sounds interesting but mihgt not be the type of thing you would risk ordering your entire entree on. Kangaroo sausage ended up a little spicy for me but quite good. Lamb chop was out of this world the shrimp on the barbie was great and their barra fish was out of this world. Great date place and everthing on the menu is around $10 which is super cheap. On mondays they have there whole menu at $5 which is so cheap you might get arrested for stealing. Dont bother going in 2 mondays because I am going back with 12 people. :) Everyone is really nice there also.

After hearing some positive word of mouth reviews about the restaurant/bar, six of us went down for dinner. Getting there was a little bit of a chore (not really near any subways), but the trip was well worth it. We went on a Monday night for their $5 food and drinks special. Everything was $5! All the food we ordered was great. The drinks were also great. It's not high caliber dining, but this place is obviously about more than just the food and drinks. We ended up hanging out for a few hours at their bar with a staff that we felt like we've known for years. A gem of a find this place is. We'll be going back, and recommending it to all of our friends.

Food is fantastic, but since they switches to Tapas-style dishes (same food, only less of it), the prices don't make much sense. We were 4 people, ate 6 dishes in 7 minutes (after waiting 45 minutes) and felt we'd just had appetizers. Service is super-friendly but super-slow. Expect to sit without a drink for 10 minutes or longer depending on how busy it is.
