FLEX MUSSELS......

dined there a few nights ago and the manager, tall brunette made it seem like we were bothering her for coming there. I asked her what her name was and she just walked away from us as if we had not taken a shower or something.

This is not the way to treat a guest. There are hundreds of restaurants that I have been to but have never been treated like this. I managed to ask one of the servers who she was and they told me that she was the owners daughter. If the daughter is like that, the parents must be GEMS!

Way to go you "Little Spoiled Brat"! Perhaps we did not fit into your "Upper East Side" style but believe me, downtown is where its at and every chance I get, I will make sure no one comes to your downtown location. You could be heard talking about that but could not take the time to talk to us.

MINE AND MY FRIENDS' MONEY IS GOOD AT MANY PLACES, IT JUST WON'T BE AT YOUR PLACES.

Cons: Service, food and lack of knowledge...

I don't know about the sit in cuisine, but the take out was mediocre at best. For the price, you would think that the food would be better - not necessarily authentic, but just better. We had the beef burrito which was too salty, the fish taco which was a little soggy and the nachos which was just weird - one big soggy tortilla chip. The corn appetizer was probably the best part of the meal and even that was too mayonnaise laden. It's disappointing that in this neighborhood you couldn't get ethnic food at a good price. You would probably do better at Chipotle or better yet, go down to Puebla Mexican Restaurant and Bakery on 2nd Ave between 2nd and 3rd St. for real mexican fare at inexpensive prices.

I've been here 3 times and each time was excellent. One time was with a large party and they did an excellent job with service and the food was amazing. I was just there for my mother's birthday and our wait staff was super nice and offered excellent recommendations with entree's, wine, and scotch. We had a great experience as always.

My husband and I recently went to Zocalo for the first time in a long while last
week, and we were very pleasantly surprised. We had a drink before dinner, and the bar
was filled with an eclectic group of people who seemed energized by the
potent frozen margaritas. The bar had a more hip feel to it than the last time we were there.

The hostess was professional, playful and very well informed. The restaurant was crowded, but she went out of her way to find us a table (we prefer sitting in the back where it is quieter). She later checked up to make sure our meals and the service were up to ?Zocalo standards.?

For dinner, I had a cheese quesadilla and the shrimp tacos which were both very extremely tasty along with a Frozen Bld. Orange Margarita. My husband had the organic pork ribs and the tuna appetizer (with seafood and guac inside)

After dinner we went back to the bar since Mondays are ? off tequila drinks. This nice little bonus was coupled with a bartender who was very social and well versed on tequila
variances. The Salsa (with chips) is unique and out of this world!!!

The Food is much better than its neighborhood rival Maz Mescal. The Wine Selection is very limited, but you should be going there for the Margaritas, not the Pinot Noir. And if the Dos Caminos Chain is the Blockbuster popcorn flick where they churn people in and out, then Zocalo is the award winning independent film where quality and consistency matter. We?ll definitely be coming back!

I am a single male that recently moved to the upper east side and i have to give credit ,where credit is due and zocalo's margaritas carry a kick to them. I found out about this mexican rest. through a co worker of mine. She raved about the food and about the service so i decided to check it out myself. I went on a friday night and I have to say this is my new friday night spot before heading to the club. The crowd was young and hip the bartender was flipping bottles and serving shots. i think his name was JOSE because i over heard some ladies talking to him. The music was a little lame but I really wasnt there for the music. I had a salad wrapped in tuna and a special that was served that night which was delicious. The staff greeted me with a smile. I was a little confused about the restroom because i was not sure which was men and women. the hostess was hot as hell. There was a time that the bar was filled with ladies. i dont know what the bartender was telling them but they were all over him. I decided to jump into the action. Since this is just a restaurant review lets just say it was a "fun' time. well I hope to be back soon to this fine establishment.

Pros: food alittle over priced

Cons: drinks are kinda cheap for new york city

Whenever I'm visiting NY , I always make it a point to visit Zocalo for my Mexican fix. Happily, I can say Zocalo is returning to the wonderful place it used to be. Don't miss the new snapper special. It's delicious, light and fresh! The short snobby guy at the front is gone, having been replaced by the owner's daughter Alex. It changed the feel of the place back to what it was years ago. Although the place was packed, Alex took special care of me and my party and made us feel right at home while waiting for our table. The place is fun, once again. The food and drinks are great, and so..................See you next time I'm in town, Alex, and thanks!

ive lived in the neighborhood for a while and had never been to zocalo. I actually walked by and asked an employee if they had just opened. But i took a peek inside and it seemed pretty cute so i came back with a friend. We had their frozen margaritas which were really good ( but man do they get you drunk). We also ordered a few apps. Food was very good- staff was nice, our waitress was good and the bartender was very very sweet. Its a really good low key spot... ill be back soon

Zocalo is good, not great, although I have seen a lot of potential in the new summer items. They have excellent margaritas and staff is friendly. The food is pretty good but sometimes is served warm instead of hot but it is always filled with flavor. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It has a great crowd and it a lot of fun. There is sometimes a wait for a table, but I don't mind waiting in the bar area (although a little crowded) and having a drink and talking to the charming bartender.

went to zocalo for a casual dinner with girlfriends, and we had the best time!! the atmosphere is really great, loud in the bar but very quiet and cozy in the back. we sat at the bar and had drinks- unbelievable frozen margaritas (passion fruit is amazing!!!1) once we wanted quiet time we headed to a table tucked into a back corner for some more privacy. As we usually do, my friends and i just ordered a bunch of different things to split. The waiter told us a few menu items were new and we had to try them. all of his recommendations were delicious. a new tuna sashimi dish stuffed with avocado and crabmeat was so delicious, and the truffle quesedilla was so good i could smell it throug the whole restaurant. for an entree i had the hanger steak and as a true carnivore , it was unreal. cooked perfectly and so flavorful. we all shared churros for dessert, they were ridiculous- i mean truly amazing. then we headed back to the bar for another round of drinks, and some dancing to great music!!! Deffinitely in my top ten places for a great night out.

My son and I have been coming to Zocalo since he was a young boy. This past week, after a couple of monthsaway, we returned for dinner. I am happy to report that the food was was spectacular, better than ever. The ribs were incredible and the Scallops divine. The addition of a young manager named Alex, added a new flare to the place. Zocalo remains our go to place. Do not miss out on this fun upper east side find!

My husband and I have been going to Zocalo for years and we cannot stress how amazing this restaurant and bar really is! The food is amazingly delicious, and keeps getting better with every change in menu, despite "chef rick" leaving. I have never had a bad experience or bad service ever. Its an adorable and warm atmosphere and our kids, who are now in their twenties love going with their friends for the margaritas. We love love love this place! Try the margaritas!

With respect to the prior review ? I am a professional server and I have seen this trick before. A group makes it known that they are celebrating an event and all is fine until they finish the meal and the check is close to arrive. Then suddenly, something has gone amiss ? the classic ?insect in my food or drink after I have consumed everything and I don?t want to pay the bill? story. A group arrived last week and indicated they were celebrating a b?day ? and yes, at the end of the meal one of the celebrants approached the manager to indicate there was an insect at the bottom of her empty soda glass. The manager did as any professional manager would and in addition to apologizing comped her meal and the wine for all six guests. This action was not enough for the head of the group, he demanded the entire check be comped and anything less was unacceptable. The manager stated the restaurant?s position as being accommodating in the situation, the insect was a moth as was explained to the guests that may have fallen from an air duct on the ceiling. The head of the group was irrational and indicated though he was displeased he and his guests had ?too much class? to make a scene in the restaurant. Somehow I was not surprised as he and his party emerged through the dining room while chanting loudly ?Co ck R o a ch es in the food?. This behavior is childish and of someone who is sulking because he did not get his way.

Regretfully, restaurants rely on ?Reviews? and the only regret is the shameful and scornful writings of others to convey displeasure are not always accurate. We sometimes have to see and judge for ourselves.

Pros: Killer Margaritas

Cons: after a few Margaritas everyone looks good

.

Well all I have to say about this place is Delicious. Aside from a swank location, the food is excellent! Awsome guacamole, along with everything else. The mojiots and frozen margaritas are out of this world. The ambiance has an intimate but fesitve feel...and the warm choclate cake and rice pudding are must haves! Definitely at the top of my list for places to go on the upper east side.

I don't know where the last poster ate, but it sure wasn't here. (If you look at his / her other posts though there is an inappropriately long and intimate review of a competing restaurant just a few blocks away... hmmmm makes ya think huh ?)
Anyway, this prompted me to write a review after my visit last night and I must say that this place just keeps getting better. EVERYTHING is always fresh, creative and the New Chefs dishes (the ones that we tried anyway) were very nice... REALLY flavorful stuff. I even asked for an extra corn flan to go with my baby chicken after gobbling down the first one) This is truly unique and creative Mexican !
The worst thing I can say ? I think it's time to update the decor a bit. (Although I still find the back room warm and cozy)

Pros: Food, Ambience, People Watching

Cons: A Little Too Dark, Crowded

I went there based on the first review and the way you're greeted is not nice. I thought the food is VERY overpriced as are the drinks. Why they don't put booze in their drinks is a wonder to me. For that money you should get a REAL drink. Perhaps they want you to order 3-4 drinks. $$$. The food was just OK but the portions are very small. The fish dish we ordered was not fresh. It smelled very old and had a very bad smell. We left it as getting the waiter was a real task. There are much better choices in the area that offer REAL drinks and a meal that will fill you up. They need to improve a lot before I'll ever go back again.

Some might like the place beause it's real dark and has a lot of noise. If you don't want to see what's on your plate , don't want booze in your drink and don't want to hear what the people are saying next to you... perhaps this over priced place with a BIG ego is for you.

I love going here for a little happy hour with friends after work! The drinks are strong and delicious and the appetizers are all tasty. Definitely pricey but what do you expect for good service, food, and drinks?! I would definitely recommend it to anyone for drinks or dinner with a large group or just with a date. Its quieter right after work, but I do suggest making reservations for after 7:30pm.

I had the guacamole tasting and it blew me away. Not your standard over onioned mash, but a truly well conceived and concocted tonic of avocados. The seafood in this place is also masterfully crafted. The scallops melted in my mouth. And don't get me started on the foie gras taco. I was skeptical of this dish, but my girlfriend insisted we order. WOW! The food was worth every cent and we had a romantic experience. I will go back with my girlfriend and think it is a great place for a date.

I went to Zocalo on a Sunday night with a girlfriend. To my surprise margaritas were half price. The food was amazing!! Great civeche tasting and the shrimp quasadilla was very good. The bartender was very attentive and had a great smile!! He suggested the watermelon margarita on the rocks. By far the best margaritas in the city. I will be back for the food and drinks, if not just to see the bartender. I had a great time. Thank you, Andrew!!!

I cannot believe the b*ll on this site. We just returned from this place and we were so disgusted with the food there. We ordered kobe beef tacos and all you get on your dish is three 3" tortillas with a teaspoon of chopped beef and a bbq sauce in the center. NO RICE, NO CORN, NO POTATO, NO SALAD...NOTHING...no cheese, no lettuce, no sour cream.no beans..NOTHING...just these little sad assed empty tacos. all too highly priced. we ordered quesadillas and they were not bad, but my son was grossed out by the mayo spritz on it. forget the quacamole...$10. and all you get is a 1/2 cup of avacado chopped...I get better at the supermarket...REDICULOUS. I will never ever EVER go here again. no wonder it was EMPTY...I cannot believe the lies on this site about it being packed, etc....the food is horrendous and I feel like I just wasted my 120 dollars on cr*p. If you want REAL AWESOME food...go to AGAVE...its in the city and order the kobe fajitas there...YOU will be mesmerized at the difference....they serve it with rice, salad, guacamole, sour cream, tons of 6" tortillas (that YOU make YOURSELF) and a frying pan filled with REAL KOBE STEAK....I am so angry that I did not make the effort to go there instead...what a waste.

Came here on a Saturday night. Wonderful atmosphere, excellent food. The ceviche is positively sublime. The skirt steak and short ribs are also especially good. Menu is a bit pricey but some of the best Mexican food I've had in the city so worth it. A bit crowded- our table was a little too small for our party, the plates hardly fit. All in all, a great dining experience.

The crabmeat tamales are to die for as well as the guacamole. Definitely will go back next time I am in town. Wait staff was fun and energetic.

Pros: guacamole, tamales, ambiance

.

Definitely better than most of the Mexican restaurants in town, including most of the more hyped ones that cost more. Creative, tasty dishes, decent drinks and reasonable prices.

We used to be regulars, but the food is not at all interesting anymore and the service has gotten worse. My girlfriend insists we try it again. I hope we have a better meal next time.

I understand what David Rosengarten meant when he called Chef Julian Medina "a genius, a starchef waiting in the wings." Medina clearly uses very authentic ingredients,
but gives his Mexican dishes an innovative twist that creates a symphony on the tastebuds. The food is not only superb, but truly inspired! The atmosphere is fun and
the decor is lively without being contrived (as are so many "hip" places these days).

And what amazed us is that it is as perfect for a date as for family experience.
Muy bien!

I have to say, ever since Chef Julian Medina (formerly of Maya) took over the kitchen I can't get enough of this place. The food is wonderful and unique. The guacamole flight is exceptional and specials are incredible. I advise all to try the specials, they seem to change their specials often ( I went during their "Corn Festival" and the specials menu was exotic without being pretentious!) FANTASTIC!

Zocalo is one of the best restaurants on the Upper Eastside. The drinks are fantastic and the food is delicious. This is a great place for groups and to bring out-of-town guest.

Pros: Margaritas, Ambiance

.

I loved the meal I had here. The margaritas were great the guac was wonderful - try the tasting - and the enchiladas were amazing. My husband had the Kobe tacos and I had the chicken enchiladas and they were both outstanding. We also shared the goat cheese, shrimp and pineapple salsa quesadilla as an appetizer and it was very tasty as well. The service was efficient and friendly and I will definitley be going back here many times.

Okay, we have been coming to Zocalo for about four years. My favorites: the blood orange margaritas, the hanger steak (so, so good) and tres leche for dessert. I have also been trying some of the specials (especiallly fish). They have been fantastic. I think they have a new chef and he is trying some different items out. Well worth a visit. If you want tacos and burritos skip Zocalo and go find a Taco Bell or move out to California and eat at El Torito. This is fresh, upscale Mexican cuisine at its best.

This will be the best Mexican Restaurant in New York. Zocalo may not be the most beautiful, but it is the most fun and Julian Medina's food will grow into the finest Mexican in NY. No doubt

Pros: Margaritas, Great Energy, Finest Food

What a great new chef- the food is light and modern, not at all the typical Mexican food Americans are used to. Every dish is well balanced and the fish dishes especially good- a trio of ceviche, great whole snapper. Service is good and the drinks great too.

Just went to Zocalo with a group and enjoyed a wonderful meal. We were seated immediately and ordered some delicious margaritas. Try the white peach or pomigranite which were awesome. The chips and salsa are some of the best around and definitely order the guacamole because it is killer. The entrees were good but the portions were small considering the prices so be sure to order an extra appetizer if you are hungry. Desserts were also good but not great. All in all a great mexican restaurant in NYC.

I went and was extremely disappointed. I love Mexican food, which this place claims to be but isn't. I'm from Calif and I know good Mexican food, this place was horrible. I had the Halibut Tacos, and thought the fish was bad, only to find out that it was the way it was prepared that was horrible. The salsa and chips were ok, but not worth the torment my stomach went through for trying out this place. Eat at your own risk.

The hostess at Zocalo deserves mention. She is beautiful, kind and keeps the whole place together. She is a pretty asian chick, I don't know her name. The bartenders are also great, the waiters are ok. The food however, is very good. The guacamole is great. West Coast good.
This is the most decent mexican I have had in NYC since moving from SF. Cheers.

Pros: Good Food, Good Tequilla, Great Hostess

By far the best mexican food I have had in the city. The tequilla selection is enormous and the ambiance is authentic. This is a must see restaurant for mexican cuisine lovers.

I went with my boyfriend on a Sunday night. The salsa was one of of the best I've had. We then ordered a pork fluta appetizer...fantastic smoky flavored tender meat surrounded by crisp non oily fried tortilla topped with fresh salsa and homemade guacamole. It was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the steak special for the night. It smelled so good when it got to the table. Everybody was looking to see what he ordered. It was probably one of the best steaks he ever had. It was tender and the marinade was flavorful and out of this world. I order a spicy shrimp plate with rice and it was also very good. Not impressive but it had nice flavor. The waiter was friendly and ethustiac and also helped my boyfriend pick the great entre. Only disappointed with the Margaritas we ordered on the rocks. Otherwise we loved the place!
