I came here for a work lunch and first I was bummed that the food was pre-ordered. The portions are huge though. Family style food. My co-worker Susan ate so much Chicken Parmesan she started to cluck. The Penne Ala Vodka was amazing.

While I was eating salad, I felt that I bit something hard.
It was a locust. Really terrible moment!! Found a bug in my mouse.
That means they didn't wash the vegetables.
And when I called the manager, he asked me to bring a new salad. But I rejected because I didn't want to even think about the salad anymore. The manager apologized, but not seriously. I fact after that the manager was continually watching my table. It seemed to me that he was doubtful about the bug thing. And the service was terrible. They didn't even bring the bread till I asked.
The waiters almost threw the dishes on the table. I wanted to leave right after bug thing, but I couldn't because I invited my closest friends. They ruined my pleasant evening with my friends. And I had to pay fully except the salad.

I discovered this restaurant several years ago and even though I don't live in NYC I visit every time I come back the Bid Apple. The service is top notch, and the food is always consistently phenomenal! The portions are enormous (Bucca Style) and the prices are resonable for the portions you get. Love Carmine's

Fun atmosphere, for the price the food is great. Huge portions, great for families, not for a romantic evening on the town. I'm a big foodie and I really like a big ;ol plate of spaghetti, they do it really well.

The waitress was not able to communicate the way the menu worked. In other words, instead of elaborating on that the menu selections were "family style" - enough for the whole table, we were led to believe that we could order individual portions. Therefore, when we ordered Sea Bass, we were unaware that it was enough for the whole table @ $48.50 a dish, and proceeded to order five other entrees. Needless to say, a lot of waste of food and dollars. Will not be back.......

Considering all the tourist traps and franchise-type restaurants in Times Sq, it's good for New Yorkers to have a really good Italian restaurant right in the heart of it all. Been here a bunch of times and the food's always been top-notch. I mean, sure it's not the best Italian in the world like when we go to Batali's Babbo, but all the dishes we've ever tried are excellent and the serving sizes are absolutely huge (family-portion or larger!). If you order an appetizer, it's going to be for like 3 or 4 people, no joke. I have a huge appetite, and I always bring home a doggy bag. My faves are the calamari with sauce for appetitzer, and the shrimp diavlo for entree. The shrimp are huge, they must include 15-20 shrimps, and the sauce is perfect...spicy enough to enjoy, but not too hot. Everything else I've gotten has been either very good or great. We always go with other people. The only con might be the noise -its really loud in this place...so dont expect to go here on a romantic date, that would be a bad choice. The service we've gotten has been OK considering how big the place is, and its always packed. Prices are very affordable, absolutely make reservations ahead. Best times to go would be mid-afternoon on a weekend or about 8:00pm on a weekday after the theater crowd has already left to go to their shows. Bottomline...the food's delicious and they give you plenty and price isnt bad. Carmine's... big thumbs up!

We had a good meal with lots of food for the money. reservation was very slow-made for 4 people for 9:30 and didn't get seated until 10:30. It was the evening of black friday so we were understanding. The food was worth the wait. Will return again.

In my kids' words: Mom, this is the best food I've ever had. The portions are truly "family size", four could eat from a single order. The place is very crowded but it's easy to understand why. The waiter was not as polite as he should have been, but, hey, it's NY and he was on the go. We are Italian food fans and, believe me, this was the very best in a looonnnggg time. Don't miss it!

I have gone to this restaurant on many occassions with my family and the food is aswesome.
However, it can only be said that if you don't make reservations in advance you might have to wait for the titatic to arrive to get a table. Moreover, the staff is rude and pushy if you are a couple versus a group as they are so hungry for tips. If you are a couple at this 42nd street location expect to be ignored by your waiter who will be talking up a storm with larger groups. I sugguest to go uptown where the food is awesome and the service really rocks!

Me and 3 others went to Carmine's the other night and had an amazing time. The food was served in huge portions. Top notch, amazing italian dishes! Probably one of my favorites outside of Little Italy of course. Carmine's is an excellent place to go for a group or family dinner. I'll definitely have to go back for more when i get another big group of people together and want some delicious italian food.

my friend and i with the same birthday (but few mutual friends) had a joint dinner with friends at Carmine's midtown - we wanted to have enough food for everyone without any issue of overspending - excellent for that, we couldn't finish 2 appetizers+2 entrees between 8 people. no way to criticize that part in nyc.

The servers were arrogant and tactless, but it was not worth being upset about when the whole theatre district is there. The only FLAW to keep in mind: surcharges for petty stuff like extra marinara are everywhere, and it's a surprise on the bill - obviously it would be unpleasant to ask about an extra charge every time someone wants sauce or bread, so that's your call.Everything, Without Question or Saying so, CHARGED for!!
A friend brought a cake for us - we said we'd eat it at home and they happily insisted that we celebrate there. we said how many slices, but they sliced the whole thing, and hadn't even let us know that we'd be charged per slice. Corking fee is standard of course, but pushing a service without mentioning service charge upfront...and refusing to just bring forks or the bill- the cake she had already paid for ended up costing over $100 to eat. Crazy! Just eat their dessert or something.
Note that it's 4 instead of 3 stars because at the end of the day it's hard to find a place to let loose in a big group, eat your fill, keep a reasonable cost (if you come empty handed ha), take kids, arrange accessibly from wherever everyone lives and get a late reservation or a big group just a few days before

Huge portions and a carefully orchestrated Italian American feel keep the tourists comming back to this theater district hot-spot. The taste of the food leaves a lot to be desired though and you instantly realize that the Chef Boyardee people might have been here once or twice to compare recipes. It really does a good job on atmosphere and is great to bring picky family members to, as they are sure to find something they like.

We went here to celebrate my boyfriend's graduation from grad school. Apparently, their reservations are so tight, that they can't deal with part of the party being a little late. They began serving immediately the pre-fixe dinner while some people hadn't arrived. My bf's family is Hindu and even after specifying we wanted no pork or beef, both before we arrived and during, we were given stuffed mushrooms with ham/beef in it! Even after being assured nothing contained meat! When the waiter removed the plates with the mushrooms he never returned to give my bf a new plate or place settings! AND we were not apologized to nor financially compensated. They poured wine on the white tablecloth more than once when serving us wine. They spilled water. They took plates away before people were finished. And they rushed us out because "they had another reservation waiting". For all that money, you should wait until we're finished! I grew up in an Italian family in a New York Italian neighborhood and I know this place is not worth the hype. Go to an Italian neighborhood in an outer-borough or at least not in Times Square. A terrible time! Everyone at the table was astonished with the inattentive, messy and rude service! AND they have the nerve to include tip with service like that. Learn how to treat real New Yorkers, Carmine's!

We were guests of friends celebrating their son's graduation, along with young children through to the elderly grandparents.

What worked well was the family style platters of food that could be shared by all, with as much or little personal serving size as desired, and which also saved time with regard to menu choice for such a large gathering so that the family could get on with the celebration and enjoy having the family all together for once as their children are at various levels of school and college in different states, and the grandparents travelled far to attend also.

The bar prices for the drinks were steep given the venue, and slow. The atmosphere was noisy, but just what was wanted by the son in his 20's who had chosen the venue. An excellent family based night out.

We went after the theater around 10:30. The menu was on the wall and there weren't any descriptions of the dishes which made it hard to order. The dishes are huge which also makes it hard because you all have to agree, but it would've been nice to have a bit smaller of a dish so that you could order more of a variety of different dishes. We didn't mind sharing but would've like to try more things. There were only three of us. Nice ambiance and great service. The food was just okay. Nothing to write home about.

The place is definitely noisy & will be hard to have a decent conversation with anyone, but the food was good. I ordered the penne a la vodka with chicken to share with one other person & it was very filling. Carmines likes to use a lot of garlic in their entrees, so be warned unless you like garlic. Not exactly a great "date" place if you know what I mean.

Carmine's is definetly not the place for a quiet romantic dinner. It seems tailored towards large and loud groups into plate sharing and chatting up a storm. The food is good and garlicky. Don't even consider ordering a plate for yourself. They were made to be shared.

I've been going to this place on and off for the past 10 years (I still think the one on the UWS is better) and feel that not much has changed, except that it has become even more crowded at times. This is a place you go with a group, especially one that likes garlic, sharing and doesn't mind having to shout to be heard. Order the ceasar salad (crisp romaine, heavy garlic and crunchy croutons - enough for 4), the veal scallopine with white wine, lemon & butter - delicious, and even the chicken parm or rigatoni w/ fresh tomato & shrimp as it's hard to go wrong with these dishes. Many others are mediocre at best or large enough to feed small tribes in Burundi, which make them visually unappealing. Oh, and I should mention... be prepared to watch & hear bored servers singing "Happy Birthday" at least 6 times on a weekend night, before heading out where you'll definitely need altoids for the after party and tums before bed !

My fiance and I went to Carmine's to celebrate getting engaged. We were ready to feast and enjoy some drinks. I had previously researched the restaurant and therefore was aware of the family style dishes. The hostess was very polite and congratulated us upon our seating. However, the service went down hill from there. The waitress was very dry and rude. She basically argued with us every step of the ordering process. It was a constant struggle with each dish we ordered. We started w/ Caesar Salad and Garlic Bread w/ cheese. She frowned and questioned whether or not we would be getting an entree. We replied yes. Then she proceeded to tell us how large the order of garlic bread was. We appreciated the first warning, however again we were aware of the large portions. After repeating our appetizers, she than replied that "it was overkill". At this point, she should have accepted the order, instead we had to exchange more words. Next we ordered Lasagna, but they had run out. Maybe if the portions weren't so huge, they would have enough to go around. :) We ended up ordering Spaghetti for our entree. By this point, the waitress had a very coy attitude and she was not attentive with drink refills. We received the salad and then the breadsticks. Then within 5 mins our entree appeared. We were barely starting to eat the garlic bread. We told the waiter to bring the dish back to the kitchen. The timing was horrible. Then once we were finished our appetizers, we sat there for 15-20 minutes, b/c the waitress was no were to be found. We asked another waiter to check on our food. At that point, they told us it would be another 4-5 min. This was the last straw! We asked for a manager. We told the manager the food was excellent, but we were disappointed in the overall service. He ended up buying us a round of drinks as an apology. However, we would have much rather had a pleasant meal!

My first trip to NY and a friend that lives there recommended Carmine's. It was wonderful!! Large portions...great food. The chicken parmesan was to die for. Best I have ever had. Atmosphere wonderful, waitstaff friendly. I LOVED IT AND WILL GO AGAIN MY NEXT TRIP TO NY!

Pros: everything!

Cons: nothing!

The staff at Carmine's are always rude. I've given this restaurant three chances and it failed miserably every time. The food is nothing special--just huge helpings of thick pasta and overly-rich sauces. The caesar salad is good. Eating at the bar is a nightmare. Don't even think about going before a show on the weekends. I tried that on a Friday, told the guy otside the door that I did not have a reservation and he said, "You may as well just leave now." Go to Virgil's BBQ across Times Square for polite service and awesome food.

Pros: One meal provides leftovers for at least the next

Cons: Crowded, loud, rude staff

The wait was long, the place was crowded and loud but I expected this from a place with a reputation as stellar as Carmine's. It's fair to say that I was ravenous and my feet were very sore by the time our party was seated so it was going to take more than average cuisine to impress me. The wait and the pain was totally worth it. Yes it was pricey but I expected that. I had the opportunity to sample several of their dishes as I was in a party of 12 for a friend's birthday so their were about 8 different dishes at the table. Everything that crossed my palate was delicious. Go and wear an elastic waistband.

Cons: the wait, the chairs, the crowd

Please do not go with a party of less than four. It just doesn't make sense. But for groups, this place is perfect! he food is meant to be shared, with heaping, family-style portions. It is always crowded, so make reservations, and tell your group to arrve on time since they won't seat incomplete parties. T

Anyone who knows good italian will find this place exactly what it is. A tourist trap. Big portions but not all it's cracked up to be.

I went there recently since so many people were raving about this place, but I found the food to be very salty. We ordered 4 dishes and 3 of the 4 dishes were way too salty. On top of that, our waiter was such a jerk. Very arrogant, rude, and horrid service. I complained to the management and they were very unsympathic. They don't take reservations and it took us over an hour to get seated

I went there with a large group and everyone was raving about how delicious it was...but I found it to be SO SALTY to the point where I am still thirsty 13 hours after I ate. They're a little touristy and gimmicky but it is, indeed, pretty neat inside. They brought a basket of breads over, and all of the bread was cold and they didn't bring any olive oil or butter. How hard is it to heat the bread up in the oven beforehand? It makes it taste much better and fresher.

The atmosphere is pretty neat, the seafood is fresh, but overall I'd say skip it and hop on a cab to Little Italy.

This restaurant is great for group dining. Although it can be hard to make reservations sometimes and making sure that you're whole party will show up, it's worth the hassle. Great for pre-theatre dining or just dining in general. For couples, order a light appetizer and 1 entree, it will be more than enough. Sometimes our eyes are larger than our stomachs!

It was a little expensive, but the food was great. Very generous portions so don't order too much. Reservations are highly recommended. I was running late with my girlfriend and I called in. They honored the call and noted it and had a table waiting for me. The service was good, the experience was good. You have to go there, even if it is just once.

My wife and I went there for dinner and the food was fantastic. The prices vary ($20+)but each dinner may feed 2-6 people. We shared the Carmine's Salad which was delicious, and ordered Chicken Cutlet Parm along with Shrimp Parm. and needless to say we took home a doggy bag. If you want pasta under your entree it will cost you additional money but the portion size is huge. Good desserts. Great value, great food, service was good. Reservations a must. If you're going after 4PM you may have a long wait, but well worth it.

It's a nice family style place with good Italian food, but pretty crowded since it's so close to Times Square. We made reservations ahead of time, so didn't have any problems. Started with some salad and mozerella. Then had Rigatoni & Broccoli and Chicken Parmigiana The pasta was very good. It's a nice place, but make reservations to avoid the wait.

Carmines is my all time favorite restaurant. They serve huge portions (family style) and all of the food is delicous. Even the side dishes are humungous. It is conveniently located in the theater district, the only drawback is that it gets crowded. And you cannot make a reservation unless you have a minimum of 6 people (I think that's the minimum), regardless, this is a must eat!

PROS: Food, Portions
CONS: Crowded

Its big, its Italian, and the prices are nice. So whats wrong with Carmine's? Its the salt, it can also be the service, but still worth the visit if you have 10 people who are starving and don't mind family style carbs for cheap. Make sure you don't have acid reflux before dining in this theater district Italian haven.

This place has the best martini's in the world, with a friendly staff. You have really got to love the Italian food and enviornment. This place has the real Italy feel to it. With family style service, it's the place to be! The food, atmoshpere and service are always great. I love to take family and friends to eat here. Great place to sit back and have a good time with family and friends. This is not a quiet restaurant so if you are looking for a quiet place to eat this is not it. The price is reasonable!

Went recently based on an internet recommendation for best spaghetti & meatballs. I ate at the bar and it was delicious food and friendly people. Only thing is, each dish serves 3-4, even appetizers, so you must take it home. Not designed for solo travelers who don't have a fridge. Otherwise, highly recommend the quality of food for the money.

If you have someone coming in from out of town who loves Italian food, this is the place to go. I brought my girlfriend's family here and they just loved it. Huge portions of delcious food, loaded in garlic. And don't forget the Titantic before you leave - there is nothing quite like ending a huge meal with a flourless chocolate cake. Very friendly and patient waitstaff. Just make sure you make reservations, or you'll never get in.
