The website looks great but Dawn has little patience. I am new to fishing and have a 78 year old dad with whom I wanted to spend a nice weekend -- my concerns were about the conditions of the river in early spring as well at what supplies to bring

Her responses to questions were "check out my website". She didn't want to answer questions.

When I asked her about adding a 3 person to the boat she kept saying that if I am trying to save money . . . I insisted that money was not the issue. She persisted saying that people do this all the time to her to squeeze another person to save money . . . Finally I told her that she was simply not listening. She hung up.

If this is customer service, I would be very concerned about booking with the company.

I should have done a little review before calling Dawn. Looking at her snarkey responses to the other previous poor reviews will give everyone an idea of how she handles criticism.

Insider pages, thanks for having a website that people can search before entrusting hundreds of dollars.

Really? Another "anonymous" reviewer? For all of the intelligent readers out there I trust that you will consider this review and know that when people don't get what they want they post negative reviews anonymously. Apparently this person realized when I said, "Goodbye, I have a customer on the other line", he got very mad. When the advertised special says, "2 people in a driftboat", it doesn't mean "2 people plus a 78 year old dad." I'm sure business owners out there get how people always try to take advantage and when they can't get what they want they post garbage like this. INSIDERPAGES, you must be making a lot of money with anonymous reviewers? You should change your policy and make it so everyone who wants to post a review makes their identity known so they too can be accountable, especially when other local businesses read these reviews and pass this type of "potential customer" OFF to another competitor so THEY can deal with them. Seriously. Now-a-days people are SHOCKED when they can actually speak to someone when they call..........everything is on the website.......1. do you want to make a reservation 2. here's where you can send the deposit, 3. further details are divulged when your deposit is received I'm sorry, we don't give fishing trips over the phone!

Wow is all that I can say. As an college educated business man I am completely appalled. To be fair, I have never shopped at this establishment and now there is no way that I will in the future. My decision has nothing to do with the reviews on this site either. Normally I chalk up alot of negative reviews to angry customers who overreact to something in some fashion, or the competition. I don't beloved that's the case here though.
My decision is based completely on the responses made by the owner of the establishment. Those responses are completely unprofessional in every manner.
For the record, I am a moderately successful business man who is gathering information about the tackle shops in the area because I am considering opening one for my son to run.
Thank you Dawn for the lesson today. I will share this with my son and use it as a learning experience to show just a few of the many things that can be done to alienate clientele. Yikes!
I wish you well and I hope you can step outside the box and try to look at your business from a customer's perspective. It might serve you well Dawn.

I went to Pulaski fishing for the first time ever and I loved the town. I stopped at the Yankee Fly & Tackle and spent over $200 and inquired about accomodations that would accepted my dog. She explained that she did not accept pets, which was fine, but failed to tell me the 1880 House B&B right across from her that does accept dogs. I believe her lack of information to me was only out of spite becasue she does not like the owners of the B&B. My point is she claims if you spend money with her, she will give you information. Well in my case, if I did not find this B&B on my own I would not of had any place to stay that evening. I also asked her if we were allowed to fish on her propety and she said "no" only guests of her place were allowed. Which again I understood, but it was a slow weekend and she had much vacancy and I did not see one person fishing on her property all weekend. So I guess my $200 spent at her store just was not enough money to allow us to stand on her property and fish a bit and the $200 was not enough money to allow us the info of where we could stay that evening.. After that we decided to go the the bait shop across from her and what wonderful and friendly (normal) people. I will never shop her store again as she is obnoxious and I will be more than happy to give my money to the other bait shop across the street from her. And if you need to stay in Pulaski, check out the reviews on travelocity, yahoo etc...for the 1880 House B&B. Absolutley wonderful place to stay.

FACT: JEALOUS FACT: This guy didn't make a reservation, came to town in PEAK season on a PRIME weekend last minute with his dog, brought all of his equipment with him, stopped by my shop, dropped $2 on one fly. He probably looked over the bridge and couldn't believe his eyes with ALL of the HUGE fish in my hole and was pissed at himself for not making a reservation. FACT: My place was booked and I don't allow pets. FACT: Sounds like this guy had to fish with the crowds, didn't catch any fish, and couldn't fish "My Hole"! I've stayed at YFT and hired their guides on multiple occasions. Always had a comfortable stay and a great time both in fishing and talking to Dawn. She runs a clean and tight ship and treats customers fairly. The reason I find myself returning time and again is simple: there's no bulls**t at YFT. If I call and the fishing is bad, Dawn will tell me. If I have a problem, Dawn will help me. She does everything she can to help her customers, and I have to respect that she still puts her family first.

I also respect the problems she and everyone who works and lives in a tourist destination confront: strangers who expect every whim to be catered to, but only want to pay bottom dollar and pump the locals for information. Times are hard and Dawn, like the rest of us, needs to make ends meet. It takes years to know a river like she and her guides do, and those services aren't free. Some of the other reviewers don't seem to understand that.

My wife and I just returned from a weekend with Dawn and Tony at Yankee Fly and Tackle shop and we had a great time. Dawn could not have been a better hostess and Tony is a great guide. When we arrived on Sat. the river was flowing at 4200cfs. I was concerned but Tony and Dawn said not to worry...Tony would find fish for us. I wanted to fish behind the shop and Dawn told me where to stand and cast and I managed to get one decent brown (and a snagger sweatshirt for my effort). Even in extremely difficult conditions the next day, Tony was able put us into fish. We had 18 steelies on. Tony was very patient thru all our blunders and we had a great time. When we were at the lodge Dawn and Tony made us feel like long time friends. They invited us down and we talked and laughed with them for hours.
The rooms at the lodge are very large and comfortable and as for the shop I found a wide variety of equipment and the prices were equal to or lower than the other shops in Pulaski.
We can't wait to go again and stay and fish with Dawn and Tony. I won't go anywhere else!

I would highly recommend the Yankee Fly & Tackle. It was a last minute decision to try to go fishing and when I called the owner Dawn back in January she was at a store w/ her kids and rather than blowing me off and telling me to call back or call some other place, she took my information down and said she would call back because she was going to try to get something going for me. Dawn had her guides booked and still managed to get me onto a lake Ice fishing. I had to cancel because of frozen pipes at my camp, but Dawn went above and beyond that day. I booked a Steelhead trip w/ her for April 16th and boy let me tell you what an experience. The weather was so brutal that we did not think we would be able to go on the drift boat but our guide Tony G made the decision to go out on the drift boat and what a great time we had. We were a group of 3 and and not even 5 minutes int the trip Tony put us onto some nice Steelheads on a gravel bed. Tony took his time w/ each one of us to show us the basics and boy did it pay off. My friend John hooked into a nice 14 lb Steelhead and I caught one not long after. My other friend Mitch unfortunately was having a bad day and Tony was adamant in having Mitch catch a fish. We booked a 1/2 day trip and Tony never made it feel like he was watching a clock. Tony only real concern was that we all caught fish. I never will forget that and he has the patience of God because I do not think you could of put 20 Steelhead in a baby pool and poor Mitch would have not caught one. Mitch also managed to keep Tony changing his line every 5 minutes and Tony always remained calm. I just want to thank Dawn and Tony for such a memorable experience that I will never forget!

Mike, sometimes the timing is not right and with a guy like you who understands that, that's when you get a great trip! Some people don't understand that when it's not happening the first time, it may be a "blessing in disquise". Glad you and your friends had a great time and you are right.....those were some "EXTREME FISHING CONDITIONS", which by the way, make for the "BEST BRAGGING RIGHTS"!!! Until the next time, Dawn Rucando

This shop is run by a fat, rude little midget. She is nothing more then a pathetic townie that has never left her little town. If you are a true fisherman and respect the sport make the trip next door and support honest and local fisherman

I'm very happy with my stay at Yankee Fly & Tackle. Dawn, Tony, Isla, Charlie & Chile were very accommodating. Tough conditions with the river blown out but Tony was very helpful steering us to some other waters where we caught.

I won't hesitate to book another week next year and who knows, maybe a drift.

the old native american adage about walking a mile in ones moccasins will fit many of these reviews. my party and i stayed at dawn's lodge and had no issues whatsoever. we were treated as family and enjoyed hanging out and socializing nearly every night we were there. we stayed for a full week and found the rooms neat and clean with surprisingly comfortable beds. the salmon river was blown out for the entire time we were there and both dawn and the shop guide tony put us on fish, even pointed us at some local holes that were not necessarily the kinds of places guides give up very often.

i had read many of these reviews before staying there and honestly, had another member of my party not already made the booking i might not have stayed there as dawn is made out to be quite the b!tch here. what i found was definitely not the scene described in a bunch of the reviews.

the facts as i found them are as follows;

dawn caters to those who patronize her business. we stayed for a week and were treated as family. if you purchase 2 flies or a bag of sinkers, don't expect the same quality of info.

dawn may be a bit "rough around the edges" but trying to hold your own as a female in a male dominated sport requires a bit of a heavy hand. we enjoyed her frankness and ability to shoot the breeze as one of the guys.

tony is top notch. if funds had allowed we would have loved to done a drift with him and even though we could not swing it on our budget he put us on the fish.

dawn is a mom first and businesswomen second. don't mess with that and you won't have any problems.

the way new york law works, dawn DOES own the river behind her shop. she tries to keep it good for her patrons and primarily for those who lodge there. there is not enough riverbank to fit a ton of anglers back there and as a lodger it was darn nice to have that prime section of river to ourselves. when the rest of the river is crammed shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of ornery fisherman i will bet that lodgers at yankee fly and tackle will be pretty happy with the situation even if dawn were 10 times worse than described in the worst reviews.

Yankee Fly and Tackle took great care of us.

I just happened to see there website and noticed she has advertised for Juniors R.V. and fish smoking and cleaning . She states " this is the only place that she knows that cleans and smokes fish " Well thats par for the course for the misinformation that she spews out . Her place is only a few feet from 2 other cleaning and smoking operations by the short bridge in Pulaski that have been there for years , why would she say that and not tell the truth by sending you miles out of your way wasting time and gas only to mislead fisherman ? On top of that I found out they are new inexperienced owners and the fish was not cooked and was mushy we had to throw it out , it does'nt have the same quality as the former establishment that was there prior , I won't go there to get my fish smoked again it was terrible !

"John D.": It IS the only place that smokes and cleans fish during the summer months and up until about the second week in September because Nobles across the street from me doesn't open and Mike Fiumano from FishON! Motel is out fishing the Lake. He's so hard to get ahold of and does not maintain regular fish cleaning hours. Sounds like this review is coming from his place? Early season the ONLY place around is at Jr.'s in Port Ontario and by me telling people that DOES save them time and money unlike the other two places. Shit, doing business with FishON! and Mike Fiumano is like going to a Jerry Springer show. What customer wants to deal with that? There ARE other places that do clean and smoke fish but not during that time frame "john d." I think you jumped the gun on your review. Dawn Rucando

To start, I am not one to typically complain about things on the internet but based on my experience last week, I felt obligated to chime in here. The vast majority of negative posts about Yankee 'Fly Shop' are absolutely correct and I will without question never go there again.

My wife and I stopped in recently early in the morning on our way to the river. We found the owner (Dawn) to be condescending and completely rude. Upon arriving, the store was somewhat dark but the sign said 'open'. We poked our head in to see if the store was indeed open and were told that they were open if we were going to buy something but not if we were only going to browse. We then took note of the big sign by the cash register that said frankly, "If you're not buying anything, don't ask for advice or information. Go to the tackle shop next door for that" (I would love it if I owned the shop next door!). Upon reading this sign we decided to grab our flies and leader before asking her any questions. We simply asked where people were having luck recently and were met with a very rude response and a sales pitch to hire a guide. We were told that we were obviously virgins to this river and that we were going to have a terrible time if we didn't spend the $350 to hire a guide through her shop. She then said that if we decided to hire a guide, don't ask them too many questions or for too much information as "they hate that". Really? I've been a guide for a long time and love it when my clients ask questions! Additionally, I have fished the Salmon many times over the years and don't appreciate being called a 'virgin' for asking a simple question!

Another item that I found odd was that we were charged for the plastic cups that we put our flies in. Really? Never had that happen before...

As for the quality of the flies, although they may be tied by "American Women", you can do better elsewhere. The selection is slim and quality is reasonable at best.

This shop is much more of a 'bait' shop than a fly shop. To anyone looking to get into the sport of fly fishing, please don't be discouraged by this craziness. This is not what fly fishing is all about and there are better alternatives in the Pulaski area!

When the shop next door can afford to shoot the breeze with their customers since they and their "employees" collect Social Security Disability, Welfare, and other sources of State and Federal Income and/or/are teenagers working for free, and I don't, then please do.......go next door and pump them for information. The plastic containers were tube vials and ALL the shops sell them...they're what salmon egg sacks go into and they're 33 cents each!!! I have brown paper bags for your flies to go in or hey........since you fly fish, why not put them in your fly box? The American Woman who ties for us is local and you should applaude that our flies are American MADE because that is going to be a thing of the past........just like local fly shops that don't get supported but "pumped" for FREE information by CHEAP people like you. Soon you will be buying ALL your flies and fly fishing equipment from a foreign country online, not where you'll be fishing. You'll have no place to go to to find out where the fish are because you don't support local shops....it's pretty simple.
.

I saw a sign for fishing while visiting Pulaski for my son's football game. The next day, after talking with a friend, I found out that there was some good fishing up there. My husband recently recovered from a total shoulder reconstruction (after injuries sustained in Iraq)and was finally ready to fish after 8 months of recovery. I thought I would surprise him and my boys by driving up there to go fishing. We packed our gear, stopped and bought some heavier tackle, and headed to Pulaski. On the way, I used my phone to google the regulations for salmon fishing (to make sure we didn't violate any laws) and the only reference that kept coming up was this 'Yankee Fly and Tackle' site which had wonderful information about fishing, lodging facilities, boat tours etc. Excited about all the leisure opportunities, I called the number and spoke to Dawn. I first asked her about restrictions for fishing in the evening. She was extremely rude and told me I should refer to the place I got my license from. I said I didn't get the regulation booklet when I renewed my license. Then she asked me if I had bought any stuff from the place I got my license and I told her yes. Then she got upset and hung up on me. I was utterly shocked. So I dialed back and tried to explain that I was interested in lodging, etc. and she said that she was "so annoyed" and hung up again.
I guess if you don't purchase your fishing gear from her (even though when you call you are not aware she has a store that sells gear), you are not welcome anywhere near her--much less have the privilege of her nasty conversation on the phone and then being hung up on.
I looked up her site and see how she claims to support military (which my family is), and makes a dozen other claims about the great service, blah blah blah.
Don't even call unless you want your whole family to be upset by the absolute RUDE, HARSH, AND NASTY behavior of this money hungry woman who obviously has no business sense whatsoever. Our vacations and our money will be spent at ANY of the other businesses in the area. We love to support local small businesses, but when I called, I did not know about the large fishing industry in Pulaski--I was simply trying to gain a little bit of information--shame on me! Don't worry Dawn, I'll let ALL of my friends know they aren't welcome.

Nice try on playing the "victim"....what happened "shelly g." was you called me to ask me what the fishing regulations were and I asked you where you bought your license? You said you bought it from a place on the way up and spent over $600 there and "THEY FORGOT" to give you a regulation booklet!!! I had to hang up on you because I had to help other customers in my PRIME season. I appologize for shocking the dumbness out of you and you became embarrassed and had to write a ridiculous review. Please DO shop elsewhere since I do not have the time or patience for people like you. In ending, I do give a discount to active military and I do have a lot of customers who support my business. I guess you've never been put in your place before "shelly g." and it's about time you were. If you think about it.....if you did shop with me you would have gotten a military discount, a regulation booklet, AND information on how to rig, where to go, what to do and what not to do, etc.

Dawn is a fair person. She sells her gear at a reasonable markup. Small stores do not get the same price as KMart and Walmart so do not expect discount prices. The guides like Tony G will help you with fly selection.
As for the paying to fish... Dawn always promised she would keep it free if the people fishing kept it clean. Abuse of her paying guests and trash all over were the straw that broke the camels back. Now you have to be a paying guest.
Want information... Dawn will gladly provide you whatever you need if you are a customer, but if all you want is info with no purchase why should she go out of her way to spend time when other customers are in the store. This is a one person operation most of the time. I like the place and stop by each time I am in town. Dawn may not be Miz Congeniality all the time, but she is fair and her prices are the same as every other tackle store in town that is not selling discount.

Thanks "Jim D." Bottom Line: Shop and Support where you'll be fishing, lodging, or guiding. Don't play the "You tell me what I want to know game and maybe I'll buy something". If you come to a tourist town prepared and then go into a local shop and try to pump them for info, expect to get what you're giving.........at least that's what you're gonna get from me. Dawn Rucando Besides, I post stories and reports on my webiste ALL the time to let people know what's going on up here. People who call and ask, "Is it worth it?".......must be nice........guess they want a guarantee or something? Sounds like they want to save money but don't want to give me any for my efforts. That's what "Takers" are........people who take take take and want want want but don't give give give anything. I even have a LIVE webcam that's (free) for now and it seems that that's not enough. Geez.

Dont do business here everything is way overpriced and the people are rude. Plus you have to pay on the river they "own". The shop is in a great location but for the price youid be better off driving somewhere else or even walking down the street.

"Duncan S." FYI, I don't own the river. I own the rock beneath the water and it was "FREE" for the first 5 years I purchased the property. Due to ignorant people and their abuse of my property with littering and so on, I decided to privatize it. As for my prices......they're cheaper than Cabela's! I'm not sure if you understand the difference between "Rude" or "Honest"? Dawn Rucando

As a regular customer to this business for a number of years, I inquired as to why this business would stop people from fishing in the river behind the store and this is the reply I had gotten. I had to edit her reply as you can see. I have the original emails available upon request.

*****************************************************************

Do you feel better now? I hope so. I need to make something crystal clear, you were never my friends. You were shop customers. And yes, things change.....now I charge a fee to fish on my property whereas before it use to be one would have to purchase something in my shop. This past salmon season my shop was not open therefore I catered to my lodging guests and anyone who wanted to fish my property had to pay a fee. I chose to be a full time mom vs. having regular store hours.....sorry for any inconvenience. Thank you for your past business and if you choose to not shop with me in the future, that's fine too. I am sorry I hurt your feelings however I have to do what I have to do and just so you know, it's not based on "Greed" as you think it is.

As far as changes, it's ALL changing up here. More and more properties are becoming private due to many people's utter disregard for the environment and littering all over it.
I have the right as a business owner to charge for fishing on my property that I pay taxes on, to change my mind, and to tell everyone to F*** OFF if I like and be a full time mom. You and your girlfriend have no idea what I was going through with my life and you seem to think it's all about money and greed, well it's not. If you even thought for one minute that you were my "Friends", then why didn't you call me and ask me if I was okay? That's what "Friends" do. This is why my statement above about you not being my friends is true. In your email you said you went and calculated all your receipts from my store.....for what? To try to make me feel bad that you spent money in my shop? That's business. You act like you did me a favor? What about what I did for you? Hmm? Or is it one sided? You & I never went out anywhere, we never kept in touch, we never had dinner together, etc, etc.

You said what you wanted to, I read it and you can choose to shop somewhere else, it's your choice.

Good luck with your life and I'll be fine with mine. I hope your email to me has put "Closure" on your hurt feelings. I do think you you both really need to do some research on what it means exactly to be a "friend" or a "true friend" as you say. I do have those in my life and there's not many because a really good friend or a "true friend" is someone who understands when someone is going through a difficult time. Believe me when I say this, you & her have no f***ing idea what I was going through and you never will.

my son and i stopped in today. major dissappointment!! we needed some egg sacks and sinks but before we began to shop we asked about the high waters and a safe place for my son to wade. i was very rudely informed that if i was not buying something they werent telling me anything. but turned out to be a blessing. we went accross the street to salmon river sport shop. they were very nice and informative. we spent $26.00 and had agreat day on the river and my son was safe. thank you for your lack of info at least now i know where to shop.

"steven w." Maybe you should have bought something first instead of playing the game of "You tell me what I want to know and then maybe I'll buy something".........I"m so sick of that game and honestly, I"m glad it worked out for you and your son. Thank you for going next door and spending $26 in their shop and you pumping them for information for 45 minutes. That's a great deal! I had other customers to ring up and then give information to.

This is a nice little bait shop. It is a nice place to stop and get your bait for the day and maybe chat with some locals. so if your are in the area stop and check them out.

"Chris W.", thank you.....shop and get info in that order. Sounds good to me! I'm more than happy to give out information to people who are really shopping and not pumping for FREE information. With the internet and all the information out there, most people come prepared and then they have difficulty catching fish and then they come in the local shops. The internet can be our best friend or our worst enemy..........kinda like me. Thanks for your business and support! Dawn Rucando

Message from Yankee Fly & Tackle

Nothing is "Free"......you HAVE to BUY a New York State Fishing License to have the PRIVILEGE to fish in New York State. It's the law. We are a small family owned business. When you pay to use our guide service, our lodging, or to fish our property, you are supporting average Americans who LIVE what you VACATION. We WANT you to CATCH fish and have a FUN time doing it. Heck, WE want to have FUN too! Our INTENTION is to provide the BEST experience for you when you visit Pulaski, NY however you MUST understand that we are not a LARGE corporation with a CEO. We believe in QUALITY vs. QUANTITY. We have a FAMILY, we raise CHILDREN, we are in a SEASONAL fishing business. We are not on a "salary" and we always have a Plan B & C. We have a process when you call us and we cannot talk 30-40 minutes on the phone with each person who calls us. It's not realistic and it's not possible. Please understand that we advertise what we are selling, if you like what you see you can either call us or email us. We do things the old fashioned way and we are SMALL! Please be prepared to make a reservation and once we receive your deposit we will gladly go over further details with you prior to your trip. That's it. It's simple. Thank you for understanding and we look forward to show you a FUN time! "Here Fishy Fishy".........315-489-6115 or Dawn@FishTheSalmonRiver.com
