To be fair, I used to think the services provided at Shobha were excellent. A friend recommended Shobha for eyebrow threading to me when I moved to New York last year, and I loved it.
But now, I can twirl my growing mustache and stew, since I won't return. The same friend recently told me about Shobha's new "policy," if it can even be called that. I understand the 24-hour cancellation policy, but was not informed that one would have to pay in full for a rescheduling if it was over a certain amount. The woman taking the order was very condescending and tried to bully my friend into coming in for at least a $10 appointment. This makes no sense, considering that whomever was scheduled to do the rest of the work would be out of an appointment. Apparently, Shobha now needs 24-hour notice to cancel an appointment--even if you schedule last-minute when it's impossible to give such notice.
The condescending person at the Soho location said that Shobha had her credit card info and would charge her anyway for a reschedule. She asked to speak to a manager to figure out what to do. Someone called her 15 minutes AFTER her appointment would have started to tell her a replacement had been found and she wouldn't be charged. The bottom line: Shobha wants your money, not your business. The women answering the phone were very evasive about giving her the managers' names. I was going to go there tomorrow, but I refuse to return. I was thinking about being a bearded lady this Halloween anyway. Shobha lost not one, but two, customers.

Pros: Good threading

Cons: Rude desk service

I was nervous! Trying a new spot for a Brazilian is terrifying. I've been going to Bliss which is efficient and relatively painless. However, had gotten my brows threaded at Shobha before and was happy so I gave it a try. I am a BIG wimp and she did a great job! In and out in 12 minutes, really fast, no going over the same spot twice, very pleasant conversation to distract me, and all around pleasant! Her name was Kanjeet, I think, and she did my bikini and brows--I highly recommend! As with most places, ther might be some less qualfied folks so as with all things, get a recommendation from here or elsewhere for a specific person to request.

I have been going to their Soho location. Miranda was great but now she left. Does anyone know where she is?

i've been a customer there for five years -always felt uncomfortable that they require you to keep your card # on file to hold appointments. this week, by bank account was debited $100 WITHOUT MY PERMISSION because they made a mistake sometime last august (7 months ago) and never charged my credit card - along with every other client that day, as i understand.

today, they called me to say they were "going to go ahead and charge me for those services" and i said i wanted to check my statements before they proceeded with the charge, and probably want to place this on my credit card. when i signed in to my bank account online, I found that actually they had ALREADY deducted the money from my checking account against my wishes.

they don't seem to get how the situation was totally mishandled - the manager that I spoke to had no clue about customer service. she kept claiming that this was somehow not their mistake but an error on the part of some processing company they work with - and no offer to resolve any of it.

i will never return here as a customer. anyway, the service was always pretty inconsistent. this is new york, i'm sure there are plenty of better options out there.

Pros: sometimes good service - uneven

I went to shobha for a bikini wax (I did not ask for a brazilian, just a simple bikini). the technician greeted me with a kind of grunting sound. no hello, no smile, no looking me in the eye - she just shuffled up, and grunted. this was a drag - but what happened next was a nightmare. she waxed, and when I looked at it, I asked her to take off A LITTLE more. I indicated with my hand. a little more on the sides. I lay back down, and she resumed, and I felt a pain so excruciating that I SCREAMED. she ignored me, and tried to continue waxing, even though I put my hand in the way to stop her. she kept trying to push my hand away, saying "relax, relax. I didn't know why it hurt SO badly until I got home and showered - she had ripped my flesh. there were two deep tears. it was hideous! I had to see my gyn to have it checked out. she photographed the wounds. maybe the technician didn't know what she was doing? was she trained properly? doesn't seem like it, and I don't know. I can only say for sure that this experience was awful in every way.

I was nervous about going for my first full brazilian bikini wax. Too have to drop "trou" and bare all to a complete stranger who would pour hot wax on this sensitive area, and then just yank the hair out without any mercy just wasn't all that appealing to me...call me crazy...but I was going to go see my new beau, and wanted everything to be just right. So after my sister declared endlessly how it is the best thing to do and to stop the shaving as I had been doing, i submitted and set the appointment. The atmosphere was great and I felt rather at ease when I arrived, though it took me just a bit to find the place...but either way, it was great. I went to see Miranda, whom I heard was fantastic from many reviews I had read. Well, I must say she was absolutely amazing! She made me feel totally at ease and just chatted away with me while she went to work, and the results were fantastic!!! I must say, my guy was very pleased with it as well ;) I will definitely go back to see her!!

I have been getting a Brazilian Bikini wax regularly for over six years but recently a friend told me about a different technique called 'sugaring.' I was intrigued and just had to try it myself. So I did a google search, read some reviews and decided to try Shobha. I was apprehensive because it was more expensive but it was worth a try. I was not worried about pain or the awkwardness... I already know it's painful and the awkwardness goes away with time. I've been doing it for so many years.
It's AMAZING.
First - Shobha is a friendly and very spa-like environment. My experience started with a glass of water and a smile. I filled out som paperwork because it was my first time there but it took less than 2 minutes. I waited a few minutes but I was 15 mnutes late for my appointment so I didn't mind waiting... I was just glad they honored my appointment after I was so late.
The wax exprience - My technician was Tabi. She was GREAT. She didn't leave the room while I undressed (another reviewer mentioned this and it wasn't nearly as creepy asI thought). As I undressed, she prepared the wax, sticks and strips. Tabi wore non-latex gloves, which made feel SO much more comfortable. She explained a few things to me when she started.
One important thing for you to keep in mind is that - Sugaring doesn't always work on coarse hair. My hair is very thick and coarse but it worked great, anyway. The texture of your hair changes after about six months of regular waxing. If the sugaring didn't work, she planned to use the regular wax.
The wax was a little hot but I didn't get burned. Their 'no double dip' policy is so great, also. No stick is dipped into the wax/sugar twice. I never even thought of about this when I got waxed at other spas and now I can't imagine going back to a place that DOES double-dip.
To make a long story short - I totally recommend Shobha for Brazilian Bikini Waxing!!!

I absolutely love getting my brows threaded here, they are ALWAYS quick, on time & perfect. I have been to a variety of specialists and have loved them all. I do have a "regular" specialist because it's more convenient but I wouldn't mind anyone there.

However, I have had brazilians done 3 times there now. I request the sugar because it has always resulted in a cleaner look, no pain & no ingrowns...however this isnt real sugar. It doesnt remove the hair as easily which makes the technician go over the same spot multiple times (somehow all within the 20 minutes it has always taken -- they are very fast) which then results in my skin getting burnt. If you have sensitive skin and/or coarse hair, don't do it.

Went to Shobha SoHo recently and got my first Brazilian done. Lemme tell you, it HURTS like a MOTHER, but they try and make you as comfy as possible. The receptionists are polite and ask if you want anything to drink while waiting, and if you're a first timer (like me) you fill out some paperwork and sign a consent form. The waxer, Surjit, was not overly friendly, and didn't really say much, but she did what she had to do. I stripped down to my bare parts (she was setting everything up in the meantime, but didn't leave the room) and lay on the table.

She got right into the waxing, and lemme tell you, I was NOT ready for it, but as soon as she did it, it wasn't THAT bad. Never had someone wax my most intimate parts, but she was as professional as can be. She put lovely cool towels on my girly parts afterward to take the swelling and pain down a little bit, which was like heaven. She then showed me my cooch with a mirror and I was pleased with the results.

I'll be going back in 4 weeks, and will remain a loyal customer to Shobha.

I went to Shobba in Soho for the first time yesterday, and it was FABULOUS! The place was a little difficult to find (I passed it three times on the street, looking for it. It's inside this tiny office building on the East side of Broadway between Houston and Prince). Once I found it, though, I had, by far, the best bikini wax ever... and I'm a regular customer at other upscale spas such as Bliss and Nubest. The atmosphere was SO comfortable, unpretentious, and friendly - but still, it maintained an attitude of professionalism. Everyone was so courteous and respectful. I usually suffer from sever irritation and ingrown hairs after bikini waxes, but their gentle waxing and post-treatment solution left my bikini line looking cleaner and smoother than it has in YEARS. I will DEFINITELY come back!

GingerNY, the response you got here from Shobha is GUFF. I was a monthly customer for over a year, but that ended in NOV.06.I had an appt for a $90.facial, a month in advance. I went & was told I had no appt! The staff DID'T CARE. I raised hell (I was going on vacation 2 days later). They finally got me in,but acted like they did ME a favor! My next appt was waxing.I arrived & the mgr came to confront me (I had called a complaint, for the record). She DID NOT OFFER ME ANYTHING until I said,"What am I getting for my annoyance? You're offering EXCUSES,nothing more!"(A SECOND TIME,I WAS ANNOYED AND YELLING,WHEREAS I AM SUPPOSED TO RELAX AT A SPA!). Finally I told her "I don't need this place.I can always go back to the J.Sisters next time I want a facial" Then suddenly she comped my Brazilian. GingerNY, At the time, the staff was making THE SAME EXCUSE THEY GAVE YOU! They told me the system was going to be fixed the following week,so it would not drop appts anymore (that was NOVEMBER 2006!).The mgr said "It was a rare glitch in the system we have now, but the system will be changed next week." A desk girl told me "That happens all the time! Appts always disappear!" The manager first tried to blame the girl who took my appt, because she was not present. But I made the appt in PERSON, so I saw she did NOTHING wrong, and I told the Mgr she was trying to find a scapegoat, and not to even TRY going there. Then the Mgr said it was the "rare glitch." The fact is, when I pay top dollar for a service, I expect to get appropriate customer service! My boyfriends' credit card was on file, & I spent upwards of $200.per month there! And THEY DON'T CARE my appt is dropped? No one should have to GET ANGRY AND LOUD before they are offered some kind of apology for incompetant customer service!!!! I WOULD NEVER RETURN TO SHOBHA, solely because of the office staff! My waxing girl, Hibba, was great, and I miss her still today. But when I spend money every month,I expect RESPECT & CARE!

Pros: none. my waxer was a nice girl, but I wouldn't give Shobha biz again,as my monthly money meant nothing to them obviously.

Cons: they drop appts & do nothing to make amends until you are so full of rage, you are yelling/threatening to go to another spa

I booked an appointment for a facial at the beginning of the week for today at 6 pm. I arrived on time today and, to my "great surprise", they don't have any appointment scheduled for me...You can imagine my disappointment, when you've been waiting all the week for this and someone just tells you: I'm sorry, we missed your appointment in the system....They ruined my evening and probably my weekend. For this reason, I'll never go back there. So, let me know if you know a nice place where they can't miss your appointment.......

I moved away from NY a year and half ago and am still searching for a salon that does brazilians like Shobha. I make it a point when I travel to NY now to always stop in at Shobhas. I'm not sure if it's just attention to detail, but I have not found another shop that can compare to the results from Shobha. I've found too many places that leave too many stray hairs, never at Shobha! The staff is also very professional and make an unpleasant experience as pleasant as possible.

Terrible. The woman did not introduce herself, ask my name or what I wanted. When she was done, I was left with lopsided brows. And, you have to use the (public) bathroom all the way down the hall. Overall bad experience.

I've been to Shobha a few times now, adn I LOVE it. I freak out when getting waxed, and going here is much less painful. I'm not saying the experience is stress free, but here it is the most accomadating as it gets. Plus, I stay smooth for weeks!

WHY?!?! did I think I could trust the positive reviews over what my friend had told me? I don't know but I paid the price, both in $$$ and in a horrible experience. The waxer who did my brazilian spoke little English, didn't stretch the skin properly OUCH! and missed a lot of hairs. It was awful and I was close to tears my the end of it. And the hefty price tag to go with it made me want to pull out my hair. Move onto the threading of eyebrows. I let mine grow in for awhile because while on vacation, the waxer took too much off. So, there was plenty to work with when I got to Shobha. Only for the threader to make them REALLY thin. I complained but everything was turned around on me. I will never go back, and lesson learned not to believe everything you read about a place.

I really like this place, and come here often for my brazilian, the place is not cheap and will run you $60 (tip included), but the best part is that they use new strip every time and new was stick, so there is no double dipping, which is huge plus!!! They do take their time, which is fine, since you do want it to be the best brazilian for that amout of money. They have drinks in the waiting area and always friendly. I usually go to Dipali or Rashma.

I went for my first Brazilian here on Saturday and am a new convert! She made the best of a mortifying (for me) experience. Also, they were so sweet and understanding even though I was 15 minutes late, which I appreciated. I'll definitely be back.

I have been to Shobha both in SoHo and at their midtown location on Madison Avenue. Their bikini waxes are excellent. The price is a great value, they are very thorough, clean and professional. A bikini wax is never going to feel good...but these ladies seem to be experts at making it as tolerable as possible. I will be a very loyal customer if they keep up such great service.

Great Threading. Have been going there for over two years and I am always satisfied on the threading.

thought the atmosphere in the waiting area was nice and the staff was very friendly, my experience in the waxing room was not so nice.

first, there was no music for the first 10 minutes, only to suddenly blare over the speakers at full blast. and the music was not exactly the most calming as it was weird techno dance music that made me feel like i was at a rave.

though the sugaring experience was definitely more pleasant than your average wax, my legs are still hairy (this post is being made only a few hours later) and parts of my legs that i had pointed out to her as not being waxed well enough, she had the audacity to tell me that they were all ingrown hairs. i know what ingrown hairs are thank you.

basically, i wasted 60 dollars (i tipped her also, nonetheless) but will never go back.

I went for my first ever bikini wax and lower leg wax today at Shobha, after reading all the great reviews. I don't really have the experience to know what to expect, but I don't think it's very good. First of all, I made an appt for sugaring, but was waxed instead (i asked about this in the middle and she said, "oh, wax is better." now that i'm home and inspecting carefully, my legs are sort of stubbly and there are stray hairs she missed. and my bikini line is all razor burn-y, with red bumps everywhere. She said she'd only worked at Shobha for 1 month -- is the problem that she was inexperience, or is it supposed to be like this?

After a disappointing experience at J Sisters, I am extremely satisfied with the thorough brazilian I got at Shobha. My waxist even threaded some strays, which is out of the ordinary but still appreciated. The only downside is that it took longer than what I'm used to. J Sisters has me in and out in under 10 minutes, while I was in the waxing room at Shobha for more than 20.

Just moved here and was extremely nervous to get a wax from someone new. BEATRIZ was amazing! Very thorough and took her time to make sure I was comfortable. The end result was perfect. I've been getting bikini waxes for years and this was by far the best. Plus the receptionist was so genuine and talked to me about getting around NYC. I will definitely be a regular at Shobha.

this was my first time getting anything done to my eyebrows in a salon. i was very nervous, and basically told the threader to do whatever she thought best.... while she was doing them it felt like i wasn't going to have any brows left by the time she was done, but the results were absolutely amazing!! (and i have plenty of eyebrows left, don't worry)... i am a total convert to eyebrow care -- believe me, it makes such a difference to your face. i recommend this place highly.

The best brazilian I have ever had. The no double dipping rule is great (WHY don't they do this everywhere??), the staff is friendly, professional, efficient, and THOROUGH. The brazilian here doesn't cost more than the nail place on the corner and is a million times better. Definitely a loyal customer.

I have been to Shobha several times and they do have the BEST brazilians. I cannot imagine going anywhere else now. However, here comes the negative. The music they play in the rooms are always the same cd no matter when I have been there. I mentioned it to them but nothing has changed so far.

And it would be helpful to be able to leave tips on my credit card rather than having to run down to the ATMs. This has happened twice, when I was rushing out. For future reference, bring cash!

This spa is absolutely beautiful. Its walls are painted bright reds, oranges, magentas, which contrasts beautifully with the gold-framed mirrors and metal decorations hanging from the ceiling. And you have a nice view of Soho. The receptionists were very friendly and professional. I was waxed by Bimala, who was very quick and thorough, and when she was done she did threading to remove the hairs she had missed. They sent me home with a full memo that explained Brazilian wax aftercare, which was thoughtful.

This is the only place I will go to get my eyebrows done - I used to go to Bliss Soho which was more expensive and unpredictable - sometimes they did a good job and sometimes they didn't. Shobha is the best, they always do a great job!

I have been going to Shobha for threading and sugaring for almost 2 years now and I just tried a Shobha facial for the first time! It was amazing and I mean everything; from figuring out what type of facial I should get (they have a great facial finder quiz you can take on the website) to the tranquil setting and really unique hydrating masque. I've never had an Indian facial before and it was such a relaxing experience! And what's even better is that all of the products used were all-natural and are even made fresh at the salon!

Before Shobha I was going to Christine Chin's salon for brow waxing. I was paying a lot more and getting treated horribly. Shobha's not only does a better job at brows, but they are much friendlier and there is no pressure to purchase other services or products. I can not say enough good things about this place. I promise, go there once and you will be hooked.

A friend of mine turned me on to this place last year and ever since my first appointment I've thrown out my razor for good. It's the best bikini wax I've ever gotten. And with the threading no stray hair is left behind! I usually go to Shobha Madison but I recently visited the newly renovated Shobha Soho and loved it. The space is big and there are a lot more waxing rooms to accommodate more people. It's very homey and the staff greets you as you come in. Definitely make an appointment since they get busy, but you never wait long. They make you feel very comfortable and if it's your first time they put you at ease. I love it because you get treated like you're at a first class spa without the attitude and stuffiness!

I'm always thrilled with my visits to both of the Shobha salons. I live on the UWS but it's easy to get to both locations. I'm always I get Brazilians and my upper lip waxed all the time, and I really enjoyed the facial I had at the SoHo salon. I have ultra-sensitive skin (and more hair than I care to admit) and since I've been going to Shobha my skin reacts much better to treatments than it ever did before. I was out of town a few months ago and I made the mistake of going somewhere else...needless to say, I've learned my lesson!

I always have threading done on my lip and eyebrows. I always go to a place on on 6th Ave between 23rd and 24th. I get a great job that cost less than $12, and never have to wait more than 10 min. I made an appointment (in advance) at Shobha b/c it is near where I live. Not only did I have to wait more than 25 min. for a 5 min. job but they charged me over $30! THEY DIDN'T EVEN REMOVE MOST OF MY HAIR! I need to get my lip done after less than a week. At my usual place they are so precise that I can go 3 to 5 weeks! NEEDLESS TO SAY HARVARD EDUCATION IS NOT EQUAL TO GOOD HAIR REMOVAL! The place looked nice but was the staff was NOT more polite or any cleaner than my regular place.

Shobha is, hands down, the best place to get waxed/threaded in the city. Bikini waxes are usually so painful, but the women at Shobha really know what they're doing, and make the process about as comfortable as it could ever get. And the results are phenomenal! I highly recommend Bimala at the Soho location. Their brow threading is first-rate as well.

Amazing service
I got a bikini wax, and she really spent time doing it. You don't feel conscious, and it was pretty painless (just like waxing any other area of the body). You feel that they are doing it right - definitely not trying to hurry up. Totally worth the money
Eye brow threading was precise, painless (but expensive imo).

I've been going to Shoba for over a year for eyebrow/lip threading. A few times in a pinch when I called too late for an appointment with my threader (won't tell you who) I've gone elsewhere for waxing or threading. I always come crawling back to Shoba (promising myself I'll make my appt in advance next time). My threader gently shakes her head, and outlines the plan of action to get my brows looking the way they should. They REALLY know what they are doing there. I always come out of there looking fabulous!

I am totally addicted to Shobha. After a bad experience elsewhere, I was ready to give up the idea of waxing entirely, but decided to give it one more chance. Heena is gentle, professional, and thorough, as well as friendly. I just went for my second Brazilian, and realized that instead of gritting my teeth, I was chatting! And, it cost $10 less than the other place I went. Shobha rocks!

I came in, 45 minutes late for my appointment, expecting this "high-end, well known" establishment to be rude and angry with me for wasting their time. I was wrong! The woman at the counter was nicer then I could have ever hoped! She promptly rescheduled, and put me in for 20 minutes later. I waited a bit, sat down, and then maybe 10 minutes later, "Rajni" came and asked me to sit. I was getting my eyebrows threaded. The whole process was very nearly painless, not as bad as plucking or waxing. Plus, I wasn't red afterwards. She did a great job, considering my eyebrows were crooked when I walked in. (Ive have many eyebrow piercings in the past and hair just doesnt grow in everywhere). I will be seeing them again in 3 weeks, for sure!
