The service was great. From the receptionist, bartender and food server, the food was well prepared and of high quality without the FULL New York over priced menu. When in New York we will always go to RUE 57

We went into this beautiful midtown brasserie Friday night for dinner. We were lucky, they were able to accommodate us without a reservation. Service was prompt and courteous. This was a repeat visit and we'll definitely be back again.

So I was visiting New York and while walking around I found this place. I loved it! They had all types of foods. We went at 1pm and you can anything from brunch to sushi. Food was excellent and had a lot of cocktails. Family friendly and the staff was so kind and up beat.

The manager DAVID is a disgusting human being. He was rude to my friend for being gay and asked us to leave. He yelled at us in front of everyone and called my friend a F*ggot. This is the manager!! I have never seen this behavior before, but based on the reviews below at least I know we are not the only ones you are subjected to this. Get rid of this guy!! How can a restaurant use a man who is prejudiced??!??

The food was very good, but even better was the incredible attention from the staff. The manager and wait staff attended to every detail. We were there with our three children (ages 2, 7 & 8) and the staff was so friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend Rue 57 for families. Dinner was very nice, and desserts were just amazing. We'll definintely return!

That was no sirloin burger I had. Lots of hard grizzle to take out and the dessert profiteroles were frozen shells. To top it off they charged us $4 for a 1oz ramekin of extra sauce for the burger and $1.50 for lettuce and tomatoes on the burger. I felt like I was a Burger King. Why not build into the $14 burger? To top it off the manager was rude about it all. I'd never eat here again.

I work in the area and with so many great restaurants around, I would not recommend this one. I've been there three times and the staff gets slower and slower. While most restaurants in the area are expensive, the prices are usually justified by great meals. That is not the case here. The meals are overpriced and the food is very unimpressive. Don't waste the time or money.

We were in a hurry and had to ask for check several times. I personally asked manager if they could seperate checks and he said no problem. The waiter then brought back two checks, there were seven of us. The checks were not correct and they gave me my daughters tab twice, none for me, and they both showed mertchants copy. I signed them and left because of time. The others at my table were delayed another 30min trying to get it straigtened out, and in the end, they did not correct the tabs. They accused me of not paying when they never even gave me a correct tab. Food was mediocre at best. How difficult is it to seperate tabs, New York? We do it all the time in Tennessee!

I hear this restaurant is from the same owners of Tao and Stanton Social. Service seems to be getting worse and worse. I dined there 2 months ago with my wife and we got sick from the food. I hear they have problems like this all the time. I'll continue to go to Stanton Social, but Rue 57 will have to be a pass

Don't let the naysayers fool you: Rue 57 is a magnificent dining experience! I have been there repeatedly at various times of day and night and have never been disappointed. A key element I always appreciate is, having gone several times, the staff takes the time to remember you, learn your name and welcome you back with gracious open arms. They are knowledgeable and friendly with great senses of humor. Take the time and treat yourself to a full meal. Start with the crispy popcorn shrimp with a chile mayonaisse sauce or the brillaint mussels dijonaisse (it's a HUGE bowl so you may want to share that one!). Move on to the best steak au poivre you can find: a juicy sirloin crusted with peppercorns then topped with a pepper sauce. Save room for the decadence: a large mint chocolate chip ice cream cookie sandwich that gets doused in hot fudge at your table! I could go on and on, but I think you get my drift. Check them out and you won't be disappointed!

Have been there 4 times now and service is declining. First time everything was very good (burgers, sushi, salads) which drew me back for a Mint Lemonade and beet salad again. Second time was a quick bite and run so it was good with no issues. But the waiter we got the next time kept forgetting to bring my S.O. his coffee--had to ask for it more than once. Yesterday I went there with 3 others. Way too hot in there--keep the doors closed and a/c on in the heat! Waitress misunderstood us several times. We asked for water, "sparkling or still?", and she brought us a bottle of still for $6.75 when pitchers of cold water were right there. Did not ask if we wanted bottled--she assumed. Brought one person's salad and then NOTHING else for 10 minutes. Then 2 people's orders came out. 5 minutes later the last burger finally arrived, but with no cheese (their own burger with cheese) and was so overcooked we sent it back. Manager watched but no effort was made to make amends; one person was left eating when everyone else was finished due to their overcooking the burger in the first place. If I wasn't in a rush to get to a show, I would have asked manager what he was going to do to make us want to dine there again. Love the mint lemonade and beet salad but I'm moving on. The wait staff hangs around chatting too much when they need to be checking on their tables more. Water? bread?
Most of the food is indeed good, but not spectacular for the price and mediocre service.

I went there for dinner with a coworker and we sat outside at the end of a row of tables with a large planter at the end. At some point during dinner someone crawled up behind me and stole my bag, which was by my side against the wall, literally touching my leg. I have no idea how they did it as my dining companion was sitting facing me the whole time, but the busboy was noticably clumsy, reaching far over the table and at one point spilled water everywhere so perhaps it happened while we were distracted by that...

Obviously I can't blame the restaurant for this happening but the catch? They made us pay for our dinner in full. They're just lucky I wasn't dining alone as what would they do then, turn me into the police when they arrived to take my report? Not very compassionate customer service if you ask me. They could at least have comped part of our dinner since this happened on their premises, but I guess that's too much to ask for.

I certainly won't be going back, but if you choose to dine there -- keep your bag in your lap and/or chain it to yourself!

On a recent trip to the city to meet a friend, he suggested we all have lunch at Rue57 because of the varied menu. Hearing the name I assumed it served French cafe food, but much to my surprise it is a lunch, brunch, and sushi eatery. Of course I thought this was an odd combo, but where food is concerned, why not in our eclectic food universe. The place was bustling and oh so loud. I tried to make a phone call and actually had to step outside on 57th street where I could hear better. If you can ignore the loud conversations (due to all of the hard surfaces) and the wait staff scurrying around, the food is quite good. We all had tasty meals and cleaned our plates. My husband had a very satisfying scallop platter. These plump minimally prepared scallops were perfectly done with a veggie garnish and he ate every piece. I had a wonderfully grilled salmon entree that was beautifully plated with steamed (still alive) vegetables. There were luscious carrots, crispy string beans and ruby red tomatoes. Our friend ordered a salad but I did not notice what he had so I can't comment. He also ordered a wonderful cylinder of the best French fries (unsalted) for us to share. They were yummy - not drenched with oil and salt, and oh so good on the taste buds. Now for the bad. This is not a place someone could afford on a regular basis but for a treat I would go back whenever I visit the city. The other drawback is that the ladie's room is way down under for someone who has a leg problem like myself. I made it, but it was a long climb up to the main floor.

Everyone at this restaurant is so friendly, it is really refreshing to see that a busy midtown restaurant could be as approachable as this one. Also, the food is so so so so good, must have an awesome chef.

The problem with restaurant reviews is that most people probably only feel prompted to write one when they've had a bad experience. I was curious to see what other people had written about Rue57 because I've been there several times and NEVER had anything other than a great time. I was surprised to see quite a few bad reviews, so here's my own experince of Rue57...

I must admit I haven't tried many items off the menu, simply because the steak-au-poivre is PERFECT so I almost always order the same thing. No kidding, it's the best steak-au-poivre I've had anywhere. Better than what I've had at Mortons, at Michael Jordans...or any other steakhouse in the city. The steak itself is very good quality, the pepper sauce is definitely on the powerful side (but perfect) and they cook it exactly how I ask for it to be done. Even the bread at Rue57 is delicious; fresh & warm with plenty of cold butter...perfect.

I've been here with family, with friends, on dates, with co-workers...and it's been great in every situation.

My one TINY complaint...I don't really appreciate those annoying bathroom attendants and the obligatory $1 tip for having soap squirted on my hands. I can do that for myself, thanks.

Definitely NO - No return
Sushi is average, Poor Service and overprice.
We went there for dinner and terribly disappointed, the waiter really push us to order. and we've got asked 5 times within one hour whether they could take our food away while we still working on it. Every 15 minutes busboy will come by and wanna clean the whole table...Even worst hostess came around and addressed to our waiter in front of us that when this table is going to turned.... We looked around, there was no line and no wait........not sure what was that all about.....
Basically, way too overprice with this kind of pushy service and bland food. Beyond repair since manager seem to do nothing about it.

Ok, it was close by to the hotel where family friends were staying. I guess it's a good thing she brought an espresso instead of the americano that I ordered, because it was the weakest, blandest coffee I've ever had.

How cute that they self-proclaim how paris bistro-like they are. I guess if you've no idea what a paris cafe looks like and don't know what their coffee tastes like?

If I'd heard that they were a french-american-sushi mess beforehand, I would've put my foot down. Man, have a little integrity. It's on conceptual par with wasabi soy quesadilla burgers at applebee's.

Some restaurants are good and remain so; others get so full of themselves they lie there, corpulent, lazy and arrogant--assuming everyone will still pack them in, even if the food has become lackluster, and worst, the service has gone down the DRAIN.

The food has become mediocre at best--floppy, undercooked burgers, uninspired brunch choices, boring, semi-tough steaks. But sometimes you can take these with a slight allowance...if the service was at least efficient, organized or friendly.

Rue57 left everyone on my table RUEFUL...the manager was RUdE and opened a door in the dead of winter to the chills of everyone, the front of house was glib, rude and untRUE when asked about the availability of our table, and our server was the most gRUElling exercise in pretend courtesy. You know how easy it is to sniff out fakes? Rue57 has it by the boatload and I hope they sink soon since they're so full of themselves.

Mediocre, arrogant, blase.
Or better yet, Rudimentary, Undercooked, Egotistical. That's what RUE stands for.

I will admit I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. I hate it and I love it. I have been here on a few occasions now and have waited this long to write a review because each time I go there are moments where I love it and moments where I hate it. I'll write about my last experience. I went with my girlfriend during the week so it was pretty quite. The food is great, there is no doubt about that, and the restaurant is very nicely appointed but let me tell you what I don;t like about it. Every time I have gone the waiters push you when you are ordering. I was looking at the wine list and the waiter said may I make a suggestion and pointed at a few wine bottles all were in the 90 to 120 dollar range. I was a little upset to say the least. I was not looking to add another 100 dollars to the bill because the waiter wanted a bigger tip. But after I ordered a 40 dollar bottle of wine and go that out of the way he was great and very attentive. Overall a great experience and I guess thats what keeps me coming back but every time there is always something that upsets me.

Party of 2 went for very late lunch (restaurant was not busy).....ordered a medium well burger with blue cheese and the roast turkey with prosciutto sandwich and wasabi mashed potatoes....
well, the mashed potatoes never was put into the system so they never appeared at our table, the roast turkey sandwhich was very good, however the burger was way undercooked..it was charred on the outside but completely rare in the middle, i cut the burger in half and it fell apart from being soooo rare!!! The service was horrible, the waiter never checked to see if everything was ok or if we needed anything...we had to flag him down for everything!

This is one for the history books. Three of us including a concierge friend dined here at 10pm on a Friday night. I arrived half way through to join them. I had to ask two separate staff members for a menu, and I NEVER got a menu. I did manage to get a drink after 20 minutes of being at the tabel. The server was clearly novice. Table maintenance was non-existent. My concierge friend had identified himself to a manager early on, and proceeded to provide some feedback on the lack of service. The manager was uninterested and made no attempt at damage control. It seemed as this was normal for the restaurant. After a $200 bill, the server charged us for the wrong table, once again the manager was indifferent to the mistake an no apology or acknowledgement of poor service was given.
This place is a clear tourist trap. Unfortunatly, at this rate, even the dumbest of tourists will learn to stay away. Second rate service and second rate management.

Went went to Rue 57 without a reservation, with a party of 6 on an early Saturday evening. We were seated within 5 minutes. We were in town from D.C. visiting for the weekend, and looking forward to a nice dinner out at a new restaurant. Beautiful restaurant. However, service was very slow. Our waiter took a very long time to bring our cocktails. We thought he'd forgot about our table. We received our drinks after a long wait, and he informed us that his shift was changing... what does that mean?? We were seated downstairs, near the kitchen entrance I believe. Terrible seating. Seating upstairs is much nicer, and has a nice view of 6th Ave. Food took quite a while too! About 1 hour!!! The food was very good, however, we had 3 children with us, and they did not enjoy the food at all. There's no children's menu.
Bring some extra change to the ladies room... lady in the restroom hands you paper towels. Felt like I was a club instead of a restaurant. She was a lady with a strong accent, and was very rude to our children. Our 2nd waiter was more attentive than the 1st, but took a long time to pay for our check. If you don't mind poor service, than you will enjoy Rue 57's delicious food. You may not want to bring the little one's either unfortunately.

We went into this beautiful midtown brasserie Friday night for dinner. We were lucky , they were able to accomodate us without a reservation. From entering the restaurant until we left this was such a memorable dinning ecperience. I met Ken and Greg the managers who were such hospitable gentleman. The steak au poive was delicious, and those Kobe burgers are just way to easy to eat all night. Our server was on point and the place just looks so great this time of year. YOU MUST GO!!!! Make reservations, it's usually busy

12/22/07 - Well we went back again first time was good, and sat by the bar, at a table, while I was in the ladies room, this little contol freak asked my bf to get up off the table and tried to put her hands on him, so when I came back, he just wanted to leave. Also, when I first came in the hostess said we can sit where we wanted next to the bar. Their loss, glad I wasan't there when she said this. I feel sorry for people like this, if they think it makes me feel bad, it doesn't. Won't be going there again, and I was goint to bring 10 people in February for a birthday party so they will lose not me. Also, my aunt and 2 uncles coming from out of town were going to go on Monday, but they will not go after this and the owner is just walking around mumbling. Another tip, obviously this is not a restaurant with a "children's menu", oh boy , if you needed to know.

Pros: Beautiful restaurant - just superficially

Cons: Rude people and waiters bump into you should have given a shoulder check

I don't know why people write such negative reviews. This place is still an amazing midtown dinning experience. If there is any negative, it is that more people know how good it is and it's busy all the time. Make reservations like I do. The food is still superb. And the service is usually right on. Brunch....well, brunch is brunch. Gotta love those servers for getting up at 6:00am to get to work. My suggestion to those who don't enjoy certain restaurants....don't go. But don't try and stop people from having an great NYC restaurant experience. Which is what you'll have at Rue 57.

I have been here many times and it keeps going downhill. First I had bad sushi, but figured I would give it one more try. When I walked into the restaurant today, it smelled like dead animal and after my experience today I will NEVER be going back. The service was slow and bad and the food was worse. I asked for my mini burgers medium and when they finally came out they were raw. My waiter was nowhere to be found and acted surprised when I sent the burgers back. After todays meal I know the food there is disgusting. I suggest nobody dine there, especially if you're on a lunch break because your minimum time in there will be an hour and a half.

Don't let the outside and the decor fool you. The place looks nice. It makes for a very unpleasant dining experience. I went for lunch and the place was packed. We were seated right away, but the service was rushed and the staff is really unprofessional. They create a very rushed atmosphere and the waiters are moving around so fast carrying tables and chairs over the patrons' heads. My boyfriend was bumped several times by the watiers carrying furniture through the dining room. Also, in the middle of the main dining room there is a large hutch where the waiters throw the dirty dishes after they clear the table. They THROW the dishes in their and it is so loud that I jumped. Then the bus boys take a huge stack of dirty dishes downstairs to the kitchen but they walk right by the tables. Unfortunately, we were sitting in the worst possible table in the middle of the upstairs main dining room But the point is, as a customer, I dont want to see all of the behind-the-scenes operations of the restaurant. Waiters were complaining to one another and to the manager right next to the customers. The music is a mix of 90s pop songs and it is played far too loud. We ordered the basic hamburger which was brought out with a thick meat patty, undercooked, covered in blue cheese crumbles, and a little dish of ketchup. We had to ask for a plate of lettuce, tomato, and pickles and when the bus boy brought it out, he tossed it onto our used bread plate and some of the bread fell onto my boyfriend's lap. It was so rude! The bottom line is this restaurant is overpriced and you would probably have a better experience eating at the Cheesecake Factory. I know the service is better there. This place is just a Cheesecake Factory dressed up in French decor minus the cheesecake. Don't bother. Keep walking.

I recently had breakfast at Rue 57 with my parents and the service was hideous! I have never in my seven years in this city experienced such poor service. There must have been three waiters for the whole place with about 10 busboys who could have cared less. The food took forever and they forgot half of our sides but did not forget to charge us for them. The eggs were pure salt and the "endless coffee" is a lie. You're lucky if you even get a second cup! I had to constantly look for a server to bring us menus, to take our order, for refills and to even take our check. We ended up leaving cash with a tip of less than 10% after being ignored for 10 minutes. I personally would have left zero. Don't go here because the waiters are the worst in the city and you can make this food at home for a fraction of the cost!!!! Shame on you Rue 57.

The worst service I have ever encountered. Save your time and money. When I tried to discuss the poor service with the manager he said "It is good that we know". Well, it is good that I know now.
I will never go back. I travel frequently and I am embarrassed that service like this exists in my home town.

We decided to go to Rue last night for my sister-in-law?s birthday dinner. We had a reservation at 8pm and got to the restaurant at 7:50. Upon arrival, the hostess asked if we had a reservation. We said yes, and gave my wife?s first name, which the reservation was under. She confirmed that our party was indeed for 3 people, and she showed to us a very nice table near the open windows, as we had requested an outside table when we made the reservation. As we received water and were mulling over our options, we were all very excited about having a nice meal together. Five minutes later, the main host came over to our table and very sternly said, ?This is not your table, you need to get up now.? We asked what he was talking about, and he repeated ?this is not your table, it is for the ladies behind me, you must get up now?. At that point we stated that we did have a reservation and we didn?t really care what their problem was, they had already seated us at the table. This nasty man just repeated himself, saying again that the table was for a reservation under ?Dana? and we were not the ?Dana? party, so we had to leave. When we tried to explain that we were also a Dana party, he very snidely remarked that we were wrong and the other party was the Dana party. He must have said this at least 3 times very loudly, embarrassing my wife, sister in-law and myself, treating us like 2nd class citizens, as if we were trying to run a scam to get that table. It turns out that there was another reservation for 3 people under the same first name. And to add a little more fuel to the fire, the other Dana party had reservations at 7:30pm, 20 minutes after we were seated at ?their? table. This fact alone should have allowed the host to fix things without involving us. At this point I said that I have never been treated with such disrespect at a restaurant and that this was totally unacceptable. More on yelp_com

We went there for a lunch, got table in a minute - a perfect one! service was fast, helpful & nice! The food was good enough, but not what I would expect from a french restaurant!... but the average food was balance by good service & atmosphere! I would recomend to go there for a lunch, to have a healthy salad & unhealthy dessert!-)

We were first introduced to this Fab restaurant by the Concierge at Waldorf 4 years ago. Since then we have had lunch 3 x and dinner 4 x ,plus cocktails and Sushi numerous times. Yes, Sushi! My husband loves sushi and , even though this is a bistro with French overtones, they have an an amzing Sushi Chef just off the bar ready to make you whatever you enjoy. I my self have had the steak and fries( frites) , chicken and various desserts. Try it on a warm summer day when the sliding doors are open and you can watch the ama zing NYC scenery go by.

Great ambience, good food, great martinis, good-looking people, what more could you want?

I was recently in New York and this place had been recommended to me.
Over all is was a good experience, in fact I went for dinner and for lunch.
Upon arrival for dinner, we did get the long size up once over once evaluation from the, and I am guessing here legal age young hostess. Apparently we passed muster because we were promptly seated at a nice corner table and an amiable, helpful, communicative waiter quickly came over and took our drink orders. The menu is vast and it was hard to decide, the waiter was very helpful with the selections as well. We settled on Cream of Mushroom soup with was fresh and very dairy, the Sea Bass was tender and flavorful and we tried the Tuna Sashimi as well, being from Seattle I thought it would be a hard act to follow but was very pleasantly surprised. The fish was fresh and of high quality and the soy was so mellow and lacking in salt aftertaste, it was delicious! It is a bit loud but it is New York?snap out of it! If you go here for dinner (be bold) ask the waiter to stagger the meal to your liking, we felt a bit rushed but we understood the table turning machine at work here. Lunch was a different story, the meal was served very slowly and the service less amiable and attentive but the fish soup was prepared in the true French fashion and the Kobe Beef mini burgers were worth the wait. As much fun as it is to try new places I would definitely return at least for the soup and hopefully to try more of the sushi.

I'm so sorry I went there. The "maitre d'" behaved so badly I wanted to cry. It was a holiday gathering of a few old friends, but we couldn't hear each other --- there was loud hip-hop music playing in this French restaurant. There weren't too many people under 40 there, so I didn't feel out of line asking the waiter for gentler music. In a frantic response, he says he can't do anything about it. He can tell the maitre d' but it won't do any good. And that was true. When I asked the maitre d' myself, he simply said that he liked the music so that was that, a finger wagging in my face. Not the appropriate response for a $$$$ dinner. Which was a chewy steak au poivre with limp skinny fries.

The atmosphere is fun and chic, the food is excellent and the host is sooo sweet (Jack!). I love it at lunch time, less expensive, excellent food, awesome people-watching (Hi, Regis who is right next to our table) and really nice and airy in the summertime when they open the windows.

Awesome place for a work-lunch, lunch-date, evening glass of wine or dinner with a friend.

I came to Rue 57 on a date a few months back and the waiter was rude, pushy and had no social skills whatsoever. I thought the price was high for what we had, but expected for a French restaurant in NYC. The atmosphere was crowded and relatively loud due to the proximity to the other tables. The wine arrived at the same time as the food with no time to let the wine sit. The waiter poured the wine so quickly that it splashed and was dripping down the outside of both glasses. After pouring our wine, he slammed the bottle down and walked away. Next our meal arrived and again slamming our plates down on the table and walked away without asking if we needed anything. I was so unhappy with the rude and sloppy behavior that I did not leave a tip. We left our cash and walked out. It was a very poor experience and I would not return again. But, what can we expect from the French?

Try the mediterranean salad, it is a true experience for your taste buds!! The burger was great, also. In such a crappy part of town to find a good value for lunch, this place is great. The tables are close together and lunch will cost you 40 bucks, but you have to remember that you are on 57th street in NYC!!! What do you expect?!?! This place is a great stop for great food.

This restaurant is not worth the time, effort, or money to say the least. From the terrible service, to the bland food, not to mention the unaccommodating managers, the overall experience was horrible. The food came out wrong, the waiter was no where to be found and the wine showed up at the end of the meal. The manager claimed that he could not compensate us for anything on the bill which just shows the lack of sophistication from the entire group.

The tuna and wasabe potatoes are excellent. The outdoor atmosphere of sitting on the sidewalk watching the world go by 50 feet away on 6th avenue on a cool evening was wonderful. Crowded and cramped, but we got over it. Waiter didn't even come over to see how our meal was. We had a problem with the way our eggs were cooked. So the manager comes over??? He was so rude and blamed us for the way we ordered. I didnt't think it would be such a big deal, especially since I was paying $8 for two eggs. Just wanted them cooked a little more. He was so loud that people were staring! I still can't believe what happened. I eat out at least 5 times a week and i've never had such a bad experience.

Pros: location

Cons: service, management, tiny eating space
