Having not been to the Ginger Man in a couple of years my friends and I decided to check it out. We were dissapointed across the boards. The food was bland and my friends Ribeye was over cooked to the point where it was unetable.

My friends and I used to love coming here. Quiet atmosphere, tasteful decor, excellent fondu and entrees. But over the last few months of dealing with staff that are drunk or otherwise under the influence, we have decided the pros of the Gingerman do not come close to outweighing the cons. The last time we were in, the manager (who is part of the owner's family) was visibly drunk and when she wasn't sitting at the bar she was visiting tables and slurring her words. That same night we had the (dis)pleasure of a waitress I will call "Blondie", she was rude and treated us as if we were wasting her time. She also disappeared for over half an hour, the other employees treated this as normal behavior, and when she did return she acted a little out of it and had what we hope was flour on her upper lip.

Not all of the employees are like this, but as i said the Bad definitely outweighs the Good. A shame this was really a great establishment that we happily supported.

Alas, no more.

Great restaurant in the heart of Pine Hills area

Pros: Great look, quiet setting, reservations accepted

I can't say enough about this restaurant. It has the BEST selection of tap beer, wine and unique food. I would suggest that if you want a table for dinner that you go early because the place fills up quickly - it's just that great of a place. Go later at night to enjoy a cocktail, wine or beer and enjoy the atmosphere in this uniquely decorated restaurant.

Its cool, it has a unique selection. The asiago cheese fondue is awesome. If you are a little low on cash they have four sandwiches that are for 9$ and each come with a choice of side. Talk about a deal! Try the steak Madeira sandwich! For dessert go for the chocolate fondue! Of course if I didn't mention their amazing French onion soup, you would be missing out, try that too! Furthermore their main dishes are great! Parking in the back~ and a good wine list!

We are from out-of-town and went to a concert at The Palace. We stopped people on the street and asked where there was a good late night place. They steered us well to The Ginger man. Nice decor

Convenient location. Service and food are consistently good!! The wine list has a reasonable offering, but could be updated more frequently (vintages noted are often unavailable).

More about The Ginger Man

This restaurant was inspired by author J.P. Donleavy’s modern classic, The Ginger Man. The picaresque work tells the story of a young American studying at Ireland’s venerable Trinity College. The main character, Sebastian is dogged by vices of his own infatuation. And the book curates all of his charming misadventures with a brash honesty; one seldom seen in post World War II literature. Subsequently, upon publication, the book was initially banned in the United States and Ireland. For proprietors Michael and Pat Byron the novel represents the ideals of progressive society. Over the past thirty years, at this namesake restaurant, the City of Albany has experienced how The Byron’s translates J.P. Donleavy’s forward-thinking posture into the very best of food and wine and how we should all dare to eat…

Editorial from

J.P. Donleavy's 1955 novel "The Ginger Man" is a chronicle of a drunken, adulterous law student on the prowl in rowdy 1950s Dublin. This Albany establishment is the antithesis of the places Donleavy's character Sebastian Dangerfield…
