This place came highly recommended and the menu online was mouth watering so we decided to give it a try when my Cajun partner's friends from Louisiana were in town. Was I in for a terrible disappointment.

The fried calamari was served, cold, soggy, and without seasoning. It was hardly touched as a result.

The hush puppies were battered pieces of already made cornbread (stale from the taste) and then refried. That's not how you do make them.

The crawfish were old, stale, and tasteless. I grant that it's hard to impart taste in a steamed crawfish but there's no excuse for serving old seafood. These too were hardly touched.

The crawfish etoufee was sweet, which if you've ever had real crawfish etoufee you know that that's just insulting to the dish.

The jambalaya was, first off, not the right color (white), clearly contained Italian sausage instead of the advertised andouille (the tastes are quite distinctive), was sweet, and had overcooked poultry in it. I have never sent a dish back but I flat out refused to eat that slop. It was, quite frankly, the worst thing I have ever tasted in the history of food. The server did offer to get me something else but since just about everything put on that table was a disaster I refused. I went home hungry, ticked and disappointed.

All this and you'd think that the manager would come out. Sadly, no. When she did she (after demanding an explanation from the chef) she avoided the fact that we were served slop not fit for a pig (I wish I were exaggerating) and instead focused on our friend asking the server to "get this crap outta here." You're going to try and chastise someone for detesting the food trash you've served them? The only mention of food she made was a sarcastic "We took the jambalaya off your bill" and "I'm sorry you didn't like your food." No customer service skills at all. Were I the owner, I'd fire the chef and the manager.

Do yourselves a favor. Order a pizza. Weeks later you won't still be ticked and feeling like you need to have a word with the owner personally.

Pros: None

Cons: Nasty food, bad mgmt, overpriced

I have come here many times, from when the KISS tribute band was playing to last year when I tasted their 2nd hottest hot sauce. The waitresses were exeptionally frendly. They didn't feel rushed even though it was practacally a full house. The atmosphere is inviting, even though some might find it is not appropriote for children (i've been going there since i was 8). The corn bread is warm, the jumbalya is SPICY and the hot sauce is HOT HOT HOT! the resturant has a shelf that borders the room with every degree of hot sauce imaginable, from dinosaur snot to daves ultimate insanity (I tasted it, it is the second hottest, THE hottest is in a jar that no one is allowed to touch, and the sauce to jubalya ratio is about 1 drop to 15 gallons of HOT jubalya) but it is so good. The parking is a little tight, but there is a garage (it is painted in red, blue, yellow around it) down the street. also, they have live music at night. Also, try the mashed potatos. MEthink all of the food is exeptional. Have fun and enjoy the food!

Pros: Great food

Cons: a little dark (the lighting isn't the best)

The Bayou Restaurant features New York's best authentic Cajun food and the top live blues and zydeco artists in the northeast.Try the "Mudbug Mania"- 3 lbs of delicious boiled and seasoned crawfish in a big pot served to you ( loved it but couldn't finish it).The music is actually good too.

I have been there over ten times and the only thing I could eat from that menu is the salads. The salads are good especially the basil dressing. The entrees though are bland. There is no seasoning applied to the fish or meat. I ordered their fish entree and could only eat the fish which was unseasonend. The collard greens are nasty, the macaroni is fake and the rice is nasty. The cornbread is always hard and cold. Stick to the salads only. The price is too much.

Mouth watering southern fried food. Great bands preform at the bayou on weekends. If you want to eat something different got to the bayou. The only thing I don't like is parking isn't good at all. You might have to search for a spot for a few minutes or have to walk a block or two to the restaurant.

Perhaps the previous reviewer was there on a bad night, but we have been here many times and have loved it each time. The Basil dressing always gets rave reviews and leaves diners wishing they could buy a bottle. The fried chicken is good and the red beans & rice are great. Definitely use one of the 1,000 bottles of hot sauce placed throughout the restaurant, as that will only enhance the flavor. The portions are good sized and many times you will go home with extra food. I definitely recommend this Cajun gem in Mount Vernon. It may not be strictly traditional cajun, but it is still very good. Many nights they also have live music.

This is possibly one of the worst restaurant meals I've ever eaten in my life. Even if you disregard the fact that the dishes were not even in the same neighborhood as authentic cajun food, the appetizer and entrees were bland, overcooked, made with old ingredients and no imagination. Even the mashed potatoes and gravy tasted like they were made in a high-school cafeteria. The food was appallingly bad, and to add insult to injury, the entrees were nearly $20 apiece!!! Why this place is popular is beyond me. The bar has a nice vibe and a good crowd, but stay away from the food at all costs.

The food is great. The people are great. The music is great. The fact you can forget you're in NY is great. Go be great.
