This is a reliable go to restaurant for absolutely delish food...and can be very reasonably priced. The speciality martinis are very different and tasty. I have been there for at least 5 birthday parties ...which they accommodate easily. The assorted pupu platter is a must - 3 people can share this and another appetizer / entree and be full.

I like Rain. The atmosphere is very relaxing. It is a nice place to sit back and enjoy a glass of wine. The food is decent. I had the pad thai and I enjoyed it. I have never had to wait for a table and the staff is very helpful.

This restaurant gets it right no matter what food from which culture they're cooking. Their Thai food is great, but their Vietnamese food is the best I've ever had.

What can I say - Rain used to be a great place to eat.

Now, in December 2007, the service is lousy, and the food is basically a "spice dump" -- everything on the plate was completely overpowered by every possible spice they could add to the mix.

Whatever happened to good food here?

I at ate Rain for the first time recently and had a phenomenal experience. My 2 friends and I showed up a bit early for our reservation as we heard how good the drinks were and wanted to sample a few before sitting down to eat. The bartender was friendly and recommended three drinks that were fantastic; my personal favorite was the Rain Mojito: a concoction of rum, mint, tamarind and chopped chili?s?delicious.
Upon sitting down amidst the warm, inviting decor we found the service to be attentive and friendly, our glasses never empty, our table never messy. Our server was quite busy but never made us feel like she was in a rush. Upon the arrival of the food he took the time to go over each dish in detail so we knew what we were getting ourselves into. The food was fantastic, a feast for both the eyes and the mouth. We were tempted to take photos but didn?t want to be like the corny table in the corner. As appetizers we had calamari and something called Roti Canai (a flat bread dish that we will be having again). The duck was fantastic, as were the short ribs, and the green curry chicken. Hearing that it was our first visit, the manager (Brad) came by to check on us and really made us feel welcome. We were too full for dessert but if the entree?s are any indication I?m sure the dessert is spectacular as well. A great experience from start to finish! Would definitely recommend Rain!

I've been a loyal customer for ten years and was quite disappointed to learn that they changed their menu- they no longer have calamari or heaven's beef!!! The portions are also much smaller. The rock shrimp was very salty and inedible. When I asked the waiter why the calamari had been removed from their menu he said, "time for a change" and walked away. Change indeed-I won't be returning anytime soon!!!!

I've been to Rain a number of times, and I never seem to get tired of eating in this wonderful restaurant. The wait staff is friendly and attentive and the food is just downright splendid. Wonderful atmosphere as well and the prices are also not too bad. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys great Thai dishes.

I had dinner at RAIN the other night. I hadn't been there in years. The place looked GREAT. Our server was super friendly and attemtive. Great reccomendations. I had the Orange Beef, and my wife had the Green Curry chicken. They were both DEEELICIOUS. After dinner we sat in the comfy lounge drinking White Rain martinis. Great place for a ROMANTIC night out. We'll be back..

Long before this new wave of Thai restaurants started opening, there was Rain!! I've tried these newer downtown restaurants and they were fine...I prefer to go to Rain. It's such a reliably delicious and enjoyable option. The staff is so friendly, too! Today, it isn't easy between the casual dining a la 'small plates' and fancier more formal restaurants. At Rain you can have a great meal without going broke or hungry for that matter. Congratulations to Rain on it's 10 Year Anniversary!!!

I signed up for CitySearch just to write a review about this restaurant. I do not recommend this place at all, you're better off geting Thai Food in Chinatown for a better price and better food. I don't know what's all the rave about this place. The portions were extremely SMALL for the price you're paying for these dishes. We had reservations for a party of 13. It took an hour for us to get seated, an hour to get appetizers and an hour to get our entrees! I wish we went for pizza instead.

I was skeptical about this place when I made the reservation because of the mixed reviews. But my friends and I really wanted Thai food, so we gave it a shot. We were all pleasantly surprised. My friends, coming from Long Island, were running late. The maitre d' said it wasn't a problem and sat us almost immediately when they got there, even though it was close to 1/2 hr later than our original reservation, on a saturday night, at 8pm. The service was great, our waitress was very attentive. The atmosphere was warm and lively. The food was just what we were looking for. I had the cracked lobster, it was great! And the coat check was a plus. I would definitly go back.

Lighted with a warm, intimate gold and always full to the brim with people enjoying their dinner, Rain is a pretty relaxed, fun place to find yourself on a Friday evening in the UWS. The cocktails are pretty awesome and will soon have you floating off into the atmosphere and if that doesn't float your boat - try the cracked lobster - for a true out of body experience. The flavors will just melt in your mouth while the succulent lobster disappears of your plate, one delectable morsel at a time. (They used to serve these prawn wafers at the east side location which I wish they would bring back - they were SO good!) The service doesn't really stick in your craw, but is also nothing to write home about - pretty average I would say!

I signed up for City Search solely to write this review of Rain - we went recently on a friend's reccomendation and had to wait over 45 minutes past our reservation time. We found the host staff to be quite incompetent and generally clueless. The food was average - not nearly as exciting as promised. Fun drinks, but the somewhat spacy wait staff made it difficult to get a 2nd drink. Wouldn't reccomend making the trek up to the UWS for this one - especially not for the scene.

I had made reservations for an upscale Pan-Asian restaurant in the city, but decided to forgo and dropin at Rain West. Not only did I not have a reservation, I was seated immediately (with a full house) and given complementary drinks! However, after being at this restaurant, I would make reservations.

The host and waiter were extremely cordial and helpful with the food selection. The food is incredible, plentifull, and I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to get together with friends, family or even a date (as in my case).

This is a diamond of a restaurant without the crazy prices of NYC, believe it or not!

The ambinance was very superficial. The front of the restaurant was decorated so people would be lured in. But the rest restaurant was nothing interesting. The stairway down to the restroom was bare walls and flouresant lighting. The food came out way too fast. The busboy dropped the food hard on the table and walked away real quick. The rice was clumpy and the sea food was way too salty and MSG saturated. All while the radio was playing cheesy American music. This is just another chain restaurant.

My husband and I sat at the bar for a few drinks and agreed that the bartender was quite possible the most rude we had ever encountered. After two drinks we decided we didn't need to pay someone to treat us badly, and left. Didn't bother to stay for dinner.

After visiting Rain on the eastside, I decided to take my family out to the UpperWestSide location. Bad move. While the hostess was helpful, the service was TERRIBLE. Other than taking our order, they never once came back to us. EVERY time we wanted something (food, drinks, bill), we had to flag a busboy down. Eventually they would then grab a different waiter, all of whom looked pissy, was extremely rude and acted as if they didn't want to be there. I was so upset I wrote a note to the Hostess, I am never going back to Rain. The food wasn't even great....Tao is much, much better

Rain was exceptional --- from the service, to the food, to the bar --- everything was outstanding. We tried 6 of the appetizers (there were 7 of us) and would recommend all of them. The bartender was generous and the waiter was knowledgable and friendly, making suggestions when we asked. A reservation is a must. Definitely a place to go to again ( and again and again...)

I was a bit apprehensive about going because of some of the reviews, especiially the editorial. I have to say that our experience was wonderful. The food was excellent. I will say that the service at our table was fairly slow, but our waiter was very helpful and friendly. The bartender was outstanding. Some of the best mojitos in town. The steak was phenomenal, and the penang was outstanding. The chocolate cake for dessert was dense and sinful. I recommend Rain, it was a nice night out on the upper west side.

A girlfriend who lives on the Upper West Side recently introduced me to Rain and I am so greatful!! A great mix of all forms of Asian cuisine in a great room. Our waiter was not only adorable but, very helpful. He kept us amused throughout the night w/o being too obtrusive. I'm not very familiar w/ Thai food, but there seemed to be something on the menu to amuse everyone in our group. The manager even came to talk to us, I felt so important. I'm definetly going back!!

Rain is a great "first date" place. It's cool but not too trendy, sophisticated but casual, expensive but not too extravagant, and the food is good but not too exotic. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed. You really can't go wrong here.

Rain is consistently good....they have a great bar area where you can enjoy a cocktail while waiting to be seated. It's dark and romantic... yet you can dress casually. The food is yummy......and reasonably priced. I especially love the chips they give you when you're first seated....and the delicious peanut dipping sauce. Definitely better than plain old bread!

Our server didn't take the time to tell us of the additional appetizers and entrees for the evening, we had to ask after overhearing him tell the next table (after we had already ordered appetizers). The calamari appetizer was very good. The spring rolls were small and unexceptional. The garnish on the plate was more substantial than the rolls themselves. We had been here before and loved it. We probably won't go back again.

Pan-Asian food at its best! Rain is impressive from the outside and impressive from the inside. Food, decor, and service are all great. The atmosphere is fairly quiet, romantic and although a little pricey, is well worth the trip. Booking a reservation is highly recommended as the restaurant is always busy.

when the concierge at our hotel recommended this thai restaurant, i was thinking it was going to be a fairly priced and authentic thai restuarant. to my disappointment, the food wasn't that genuine! some of the entrees/appetizers were overpriced and the portions weren't that generous! two good things about rain, decor and service!

Been going there for years but it is way too inconsistent in terms of food and service. Food - sometimes great, sometimes weak and average. Service - really weak on busy nights. They seem under staffed and Waiters do not really know the menu. I have had awesome food and service their (don't get me wrong) but lately I would be wary of taking an important guest their or try to impress someone with what used to be a great night out. Waiters are too busy to focus and get half your order wrong. Hosts if they are not Diane are nasty. Give it a shot but make it real casual and plan to spend $100 for 2 people.
