I'm really glad I found Hampton Chutney Co. Their dosas and uttapams are delicious and made with various mixtures of fillings. I like the curry chicken and the ones that come with avocado. I go whenever I'm in the area, but find it a little expensive for lunch.

I've been going to this place since it opened, when I'd never heard of a dosa, and Asian-fusion was new. The Potato Masala Dosa is truly something I crave: spicy potatoes, melted jack cheese, spinach, and roasted tomatoes. You've got to eat your dosas there, even though it can be hard to find a space. They can get a little soggy if you take them out. Whenever I'm hungry and in SoHo, this is where I wind up.

Pros: Good value for the area, delicious dosas

Cons: Crowds, not always easy to land a stool

Oh yum. This place is SOOOOOO good. I love their cilantro chutney, I love their dosas, I love everything I've ever eaten here. I wish they'd open a Brooklyn outpost!

I use to have a girlfriend. I use to have a girlfriend who was from India. I use to have a hot girlfriend from India. She had a great skill set, one of a kind. Sometimes I'm sad I let her go but this isn't about relationships, its about food! Even though she won't admit it, she was a Padme Lakshmi in the kitchen with slightly better assets.

She would regularly cook for me at odd hours of the night, among my favorite dishes were her dosas. The dosa is a south Indian speciality made of rice and beans and is basically like a crepe; thin, crispy, delicious. I could eat hundreds of them. So delicious with chutney. She gave me the history of the dish and it immediately shot up to my top ten favorite food dishes. So when I heard that there was a place that specialized in dosas I had to investigate!

I made my way to SoHo of all places in search of the Hampton Chutney Company (68 Prince Street). The place was packed with people and I thought to myself "just another 'ethnic dish' exploited by a bunch of f**king yuppies." I wouldn't say the selection of dosas is "authentic" but I must give them credit, among the over priced fusion-food options I did see the classic Masala dosa (a dosa stuffed with potatoes and onions). There were a variety of options to cater to any palate such as avocado, arugula & cheese, chicken, tuna, smoked turkey, etc. They all sounded mouthwatering and by the looks of it they gave a generous portion of food.

I ordered the #12 (grilled chicken with goat cheese, spinach & roasted peppers) and a mango lassi (yogurt drink). It was delicious. The mango chutney was mediocre, I've had better. Overall the meal satisfied my taste buds, I was content. I guess my only complaint would have to be the price. The cost of my meal was nearly $20. Okay, okay yes it was good and yes it is in SoHo.... read my blog for the rest of the review

This was an adorable find, as I needed an interesting yet inexpensive place to take some friends for a long lunch. I wanted it to feel different and special and it was. it was All America with a hint of Indian thrown in. The staff was great and very down home feeling. The atmosphere was that of being out of the City. I was glad Ellen from newnewyorker dot com recommened this to me.. Definitely give this place a chance...

Pros: very down home feel

Cons: there weren't any cons

.

It's pretty terrible food. You don't get such a low quality dosa in many place but they seem to have achieved it. Yeah, you might be intrigued by the non-traditional fillings, but the dosa itself is made poorly and they fail to have any a reasonable selection of chutney and rasam.

Pros: The cookies are great

Cons: The dosas are not.

.

Great lunch spot, decent price, friendly people, good food. What more can you ask for? #9 with the tomato sauce is my favorite!

Pros: a lot of differnt varieties to choose from

Cons: it can get a bit crowded during lunch, long lines at times

.

A great cheap place to get alot for your money. Having tried several dishes, the value is worth it! Really hits the spot, and everything tastes really fresh. I only do pickup since it is perpetually crowded. Definitely get in there early to avoid the rush! Tuna sandwich was really something unique - give it a try!

Pros: Cheap and quick and delicious

Cons: crowded, but do take out

.

The #1 - Masala Dosa was quite good, I would scale it a 6/10. but I was not a fan of the 'fusion dosa' where the filling went from portabella mushroom to avocado. I grew up eating Dosa and have yet to find a place in NY to satisfy my taste buds. For a cute place to go, check out this place...and definatly at leasty try #1 with cilantro chutney. A cheap eat for NYC, but not for dosa.

Pros: relatively cheap, quick, effecient

Cons: fusion dosa, only a 6

.

I recommend the #1 or #9 with the cilantro chutney or the curry chutney. Try there chai as it may be the best I have tasted. I have never tasted a dosa fusion entree before, and I have found it addictive.

all you need to order is the basic masala dosa...try it with the 6 different chutneys they have...get a lemonade...and you've got a pretty good meal in front of you. it gets crowded there but the turnover rate is pretty quick..
and if you cant get a seat or its too crowded...leave. its like a little fast food joint, you can always go back some other time.

The fillings may be unconventional but the dosa batter is definitely authentic and the combinations very tasty. I tried the curry chicken, masala and portobello/goat cheese/spinach dosas- all of which were delicious. The highly spiced chai tea was great too. Only complaint would be that at an average cost of $12-$15 per meal, I'd like not to have to worry about finding a seat!

So, the menu is written in chalk above your head and it all sounds delicious. Sandwiches are straightforward and lovely - drinks in the cooler range from diet soda to a perfect mango lassi. Then you order a dosa (get #12!) and they serve you the Biggest Piece of Food in the World- an unthinkable 2 feet long. Trust me, it will be great, and all of it will be devoured in no time. You can even get packages of the chutneys to stock your fridge!

Pros: interesting food, tasty, unusual fare

Cons: overpriced, snobbish

Anybody who likes this place must be from a different planet, where "greasy," "dry" and "tasteless" are complimentary. The dosas are skimpy, unattractive and drip with grease, and personally I'd drink popcorn topping before I'd eat another one of these. The sandwiches are dry, tasteless and way overpriced. Calling the place "Hampton Chutney Co." does warn you that these folks offer more style than substance, but in this unattractive room with unhelpful clerks there was a dearth of the former too.
