Located in the East Village, Menkui Tei is among the best of Japanese-food-that's-not-sushi. Big bowls of delicately pulled ramen noodles in flavorful, steamy broth are their specialty, though the other items on the menu--notably the mabo don and katsu curry--are no less delicious. Pitchers of beer, friendly service, and killer playlists make for a laid-back and convivial atmosphere. Prices are excellent, too.

Pros: Tonkotsu ramen, mabo don

The food is good, economical and tasty. The menu is a bit confusing. Good college crowd type place. Service was really slow. After being seated, we waited almost 10 minutes for the menus. Then it took forever for any server to even come back to the area. The food was served in reasonable time. When we left there were about 15 people lined along the wall waiting to be seated. If they improved the service, they would probably change over tables quicker to accomodate the crowd.
