So I treated 4 of my friends to dinner here last Tuesday.

The sushi is pretty tasty, but you wouldn't know it by looking at it.

This place is obviously not one for presentation. Simply Roll. Wrap. Slice. Serve.

The waiter way fairly busy for a Tuesday night, but was overall O.K.

The bill was $180 for 5 people. So not terrible. Esp. w/ 4 lg and 3 sm beers and a vodka cran.

Being the only American amongst my friends I felt I should leave a tip although my friends disagreed.

In Cash I only had a $20 so I left that as a tip... about 11%.

The waiter saw my tip, leaned in, and the coversation went like this:

WAITER: "Sir, Was everything O.K.?"
ME: "Sure, It was fine."
WAITER: "Then you should tip me more."
ME: "Excuse me, what?"
WAITER: "It's customary to tip 15% for service."
ME: "I'm aware."
WAITER: "O.K., I'll give you more time."

He cleared the rest of the table, and left the tip on the table expecting me to fork out more money.

My friends and I were in disbelief. We sat there with me explaining the tipping system in America to them. The whole time I wanted to take back the $20 but I also didn't want my friends to feel uncomfortable if the waiter freaked out.

I will NOT go here again especially if treating international friends.

Pros: Decent Prices, 25oz Mugs of Sopporo, Unagi was to die for...

Cons: Waiter, manager, presentation, Salmon Sashimi was Stale...

I had one of the worst dining experiences of my life at East 44th - so bad that I couldn't wait to get home and write this review. First, we had to wait 45 minutes to get seated on a Tuesday night (after being told it would take 15). When we were finally seated, it took the waiter another 30 minutes to take our order. After what seemed like another decade, we realized that our orders had been given to an adjacent table. The people who accidentally got the food mixed it and tasted it before they told the waiter it was the wrong order. The waiter than proceeded to try to just give the same dishes to us! We told them that they had tasted it, and the waiter was clearly displeased that we did not want to just accept it. It then took at least another hour to get our dishes back, and we strongly suspect that they just tried passing off the same dishes to us again (they were cold and mixed). Needless to say, I had lost my appetite at that point (and the thought that the waiter may have "tampered" with our food definitely crossed my mind). The waiter didn't appear again for ages - he never apologized or even tried to make it up to us. What he did do was give us bad looks and take forever to give us our check. They did not discount anything or offer dessert. I walked away fuming at having paid for such a disrespectful evening.

If you are looking for a good value for Japanese food, there are plenty of options in mid-town Manhattan that won't take 4 hours to get cheated. I don't trust the staff at East 44th, and I just hope people aren't getting sick from their less than hygienic practices.

went to this location several times. Food is usually on point, they have a gigantic menu with lots of choices. The rolls are very good and they serve asahi in gigantic mugs which is always a plus. Last time i went however the service was super below par im coughing it up to it just being an off day but i dont know. Again the food is good, the beer is good, the sake is good i just wish the service always was.

A friend of mine couldn't stop talking about this place, and I just had to try it. I went here for lunch the other day, and I was pleasantly surprised! It was really busy, but we were seated promptly. The server was really nice, and was VERY helpful in our orders. When we looked at the menu, we couldn't believe the prices! For sushi (at lunchtime), I thought it was really cheap, and it was so hard to decide since there were a variety of options! My friends and I absolutely loved their dishes, and when the bill came, we felt like we were ripping THEM off! I definitely recommend to come here for lunch if you're in the mood for sushi and don't want to spend too much money.

If you're like me, you'd be going to as a regular esp on their special nites, Mon, Tues, and Thurs where prices are slashed and quality is not compromised. Yes, it's very crowded and popular thus, you will have to wait at a table after 6:30pm-8pm. The staff is very busy, but I'll never had a problem getting my food within a reasonable time, and they are very attentive with filling your tea. This is one of the best restaurants in the midtown east/UN area.

Cons: crowded, noisy

Since renovating the interior, this East location has become very crowded during weekday lunches and most days for dinner as well. I live locally and know when to eat in to avoid the crowds, but I would caution anybody else to avoid the place whenever it looks crowded. The service is pretty bad when it's crowded and the manager is rude. I wouldn't be surprised if the service is bad because good help won't work for the manager at this location, but who knows? I do know that this place is pretty good across the board in terms of the food and is a good value, especially on a specials-nite.

Service is absolutely LOUSY during the lunch rush, from 12 - 2 pm. And it's extra hard to get a table if you are a party of 3! But, must admit, the salmon bento box deal is very good and tasty. I've also been to other locations and had a pleasant experience. The food is generally good and not too expensive for Manhattan.

I went to East twice with my friends and we loved it.

Cheap sushi rolls for Monday night and half price Japanese BBQ on Tuesday night.

The food is pretty good for about $15 per person

This location of east has bad service and the sushi is very "fishy" tasting. The one at 50th and Broadway is much better.
